The deletion of the Upfield thread on AIBU

PencilsInSpace · 11/10/2019 22:05

Deletion message: Hi all, as there is already an active thread about this subject on the Feminism boards we're going to close this one.

I don't understand or agree with this decision.

  1. people often start threads on the same subject on different boards - is it a new rule that there can only be one?

  2. Lots of posters hide FWR so might not know what has happened

  3. Upfield made their insinuations against all of MN, not just FWR

Can you say a bit more about your decision please?

Style and beauty is weird. The clothes they recommend are never stylish. The Perfumistas are amazing though

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 12/10/2019 18:02

trewser

Yeah, and the best ones are the ‘does this dress look good’ or ‘do i look 40’ and loads of people go ‘no the dress is awful’ or ‘you look 50, maybe update your hairstyle’

😳

youllhavehadyourtea · 12/10/2019 18:17

Aww I love Style and Beauty.

The Royal Style and Gossip thread is my guilty pleasure. Blush

Aridane · 12/10/2019 18:45

I have no idea how someone could read this thread and be shocked that many posters choose not to engage with the FWR board anymore

Too true, @Cohle, too true

BertrandRussell · 12/10/2019 19:22

I can certainly see why people might not want to engage with particular threads- I am quite selective myself, particularly with threads about trans issues. But I cannot understand why anyone would just hide the whole board.

Datun · 12/10/2019 19:25

I'm not sure I actually understand what's involved in hiding a board. My shortcut takes me straight to FWR, and occasionally I'll type in 'AIBU'. And sometimes site stuff.

Other than that most of the rest of the site passes me by.

Is it to do with active?

Do people hide feminism, so it doesn't come up on active? I don't really use that, so I'm not sure. I guess some people like to access threads that are temporarily popular?

RedDogsBeg · 12/10/2019 19:47

Do people hide feminism, so it doesn't come up on active?

Yes it's to do with how you access the site Datun, I come in via Active, so I have a number of Boards hidden that are of zero interest to me otherwise Active is just clogged with stuff I have no desire to read or contribute to (FWR is not one of them I hasten to add!).

cometothinkofit · 12/10/2019 20:26

I hide loads of topics, not just feminism but things like baby names and various other stuff I'm not interested in.
I've hidden AIBU now as well, so it doesn't clog up Active. I can still go in there when I'm feeling argumentative though Grin

Datun · 12/10/2019 20:39

Ah ok. Got it.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/10/2019 20:50

I'm on the app and it goes straight to all the topics, or where ever I was last, but I usually have all my favourites ones up and just go straight there. So I only see my fave areas.

So no need to hide anything. I hid a thread once that was doing my head in but again most of the time I just don't see them.

Ah. So you are posting about FWR’s response to trolls, rather than FWR’s response to genuine posters. You think people should be nicer to trolls. Well, that’s an interesting position......

FWR thinks it’s very good at troll spotting.

Having been troll hunted on there more times than I can count for challenging the prevailing views, and seen the same shit happen to anyone who sticks their neck out, FWR thinks waaaaaay too highly of their ability to troll spot.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 01:39

It continues to amaze me that anyone thinks FWR is the nasty bit on a forum that also contains the bearpit that is AIBU. Now I'm not saying I have any objection to AIBU existing, mind, I'm not delicate and can cope with people being rude, but in terms of sheer nastiness you see more of it there than anywhere else. I saw a woman being sneered at and told that she was the one at fault because she went to her GP with a suspected DVT and he shouted at her for not going to her midwife first because she was pregnant the other day. In not very kind terms either. I'm not sure why AIBU brings out the nasty in people, but it does (which is why I sometimes jump in to offer comfort and reassurance instead).

People are of course entitled to hide or just refrain from visiting any part of any site that they like. I'm avoiding the Brexit threads because, again, those really do get nasty and I'm not sure what arguing about it is going to accomplish at this point.

Aridane · 14/10/2019 05:23

I saw a woman being sneered at and told that she was the one at fault because she went to her GP with a suspected DVT and he shouted at her for not going to her midwife first because she was pregnant the other day

Well - unless there were two parallel threads, I saw overwhelming support, indignation and compassion for that woman!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 06:12

But some really nasty, unsupportive comments too, thus proving that the idea that FWR is horrible and the rest of MN is entirely lovely is incorrect. It's a forum, MNHQ can't preemptively prevent people from making comments that others might find upsetting (and in terms of WTF how can anyone be this unkind comments AIBU is the clear winner).

BertrandRussell · 14/10/2019 06:20

Yes- the idea that FWR is uniquely awful is very odd. As I said, I think it is held to much higher standards that other boards. The idea that feminists should by definition be unquestioningly accepting and kind to anything any other woman says or does is a prevalent- and erroneous- one.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 06:26

I mean, like I said earlier, I hate Brexit threads. I deal with this by avoiding them.

Datun · 14/10/2019 06:39

People seem to get far more angry with the women on FWR if they're ever less than welcoming, than anywhere else. It's true.

Most of the time it's the women idly wondering if they're a man or possibly a troll. And that's it.

TequilaPilates · 14/10/2019 06:39

I mean, like I said earlier, I hate Brexit threads. I deal with this by avoiding them.

And a lot of posters are saying they hide the FWR boards but are being asked to justify why they do it.

You are hiding a thread about something that will affect you one way or another because you don't like the way views are expressed on there.

Same goes for FWR - I'm really interested in the subject but not the way views are expressed. I suppose whether that bothers anyone depends on the purpose of the FWR board. If it's just for like minded people to chat amongst themselves or if it's to try to educate and inform people who may not have considered some of the views before.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 06:52

I'm not asking anyone hiding any section of the site to justify themselves and very clearly said so. You seem to be awfully determined to start an argument but I'm afraid it's not going to happen.

Datun · 14/10/2019 07:22

If it's just for like minded people to chat amongst themselves or if it's to try to educate and inform people who may not have considered some of the views before.

Well there are five feminist boards. Chat is for, well chat. Theory for theory, activism for...

...well you get the point.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/10/2019 08:10

Grin And that's it? Errrr. Just.... whatever lol

There are an awful lot of lurkers and fence sitters like myself, it will be an echo chamber if others refuse to post with contrary evidence or views

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/10/2019 08:20

it will be an echo chamber if others refuse to post with contrary evidence or views

I agree, and I find that a shame - I've seen regular posters though who have said they don't welcome debate and make it increasingly so that people just refuse to engage.
Hence why it's becoming more and more like an echo chamber

Datun · 14/10/2019 08:23

I'll never understand why people get so upset about FWR.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 14/10/2019 08:31

Wouldn't expect anything less.
I'm not surprised you say you''ll never understand
