DGRossetti · 08/02/2019 13:22

Why am I having to click a full-page "I accept" from Qaulcomm every time I try and navigate the site ?

YES I have reviewed and clicked "Save".

Site unusable ?

Qualcomm - I mean QuantCast ...

WordInYourShellLike · 08/02/2019 14:04

I'm getting this too. Driving me mad! Every time I go to a new page or refresh the page. I have also reviewed and saved every time. C'mon Mumsnet sort it out! Is it anything to do with the latest data breach?

DGRossetti · 08/02/2019 14:23

Looks like they're trying to ram some really crappy javascript down your throat. Disabling NoScript go things working for me. If I can bothered I'll work out who's being naughty.

Not sure if the "Accept all" option is within the spirit of GDPR ...

OP posts:
WordInYourShellLike · 08/02/2019 14:34

Yes I agree. Let me know if you find a way! I am just about to post about it in a mumsnet-started FAQs thread about the data breach in case it's connected. Thought I'd point them to this one of yours too...

DGRossetti · 08/02/2019 14:37

Clearly it's amateur hour at MNHQ ... looks like a lot of changes all bundled into one release with no back-out plan.

Hi all

Thanks for raising this.

Can we ask what browsers you're using and also, whether or not you're using adblock on the site? Flowers

WordInYourShellLike · 08/02/2019 22:21

Hi Lily - I'm using the most recent version of Firefox with a Windows 7 OS and yes, Adblock Plus. And Privacy Badger if that's at all relevant!

WordInYourShellLike · 08/02/2019 22:23

How 'bout you DG?

DGRossetti · 09/02/2019 07:40

Firefox under Linux - I run AdBlock and NoScript, and it was by turning NoScript off the problem went away ....

OP posts:
WordInYourShellLike · 09/02/2019 14:28

Well that's interesting. I just installed NoScript to check it out and it has stopped the problem referred to, but has caused other annoyances, such as no longer being able to toggle between 'Trending' and 'Discussions of the day' in the box at the top right of the screen. Turning off Adblock Plus and Privacy Badger had no effect.

WordInYourShellLike · 10/02/2019 19:06

@LilyMumsnet - what's happening? The problem is just as bad. We can't be the only ones surely! FYI I've had the same thing happening on Buzzfeed and when I went to the website of Quantcast it happened there too so I'm tempted to hold them responsible Hmm

janizary · 10/02/2019 22:27

It's happening to me too, so frustrating. I'm using firefox, an adblocker and privacy badger, hate the ads more than the pop up so have them both turned on again and will just have to stick with the app or nothing if there isn't a fix soon.

EstherMumsnet · 10/02/2019 23:16

Thanks everyone for raising this - we've asked the tech team to take a look so will hopefully be able to update you soon.

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 08:40

hate the ads more than the pop up

It's not a true "pop up" (otherwise AdBlock would have killed it).

It's an element which is set to appear by default and relies on javascript to hide it. There are a few technical descriptions, but the more descriptive "piece of shit" applies ... it's the poster child for "intrusive"

Hello,

Apologies for the delay getting back to you here. I know this issue can be really irritating, and I'm sorry it's interfering with your use of the site.

The purpose of the pop-up is to allow users to manage their cookie preferences. We are using the most widely adopted solution to this which is by a company called Quantcast. As you mention, this is also used by sites like Buzzfeed too. An annoying quirk in the way the vast majority of these cookie preference platforms work (not just the Quantcast one) is that it is incompatible with most ad blockers. Ad blockers prevent the platform from being able to record what option you selected. Anecdotally we also know there are issues with Firefox as Firefox has some integrated ad blocking features.

The first suggestion would be to exclude Mumsnet from your ad blocker, and this should solve the issue.

If the issue is related to Firefox, I posted a thread here when we implemented the pop up in September, and a user (WingsofXXSteel) managed to find a solution for Firefox which was to add Mumsnet to its own 'container' and the instructions to do that are here addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

I hope this helps

WordInYourShellLike · 11/02/2019 11:26

I have already disabled Adblock Plus and Privacy Badger for this site and it made no difference. I'll have a look at the other thread later. However, I resent the fact that I will be forced to view ads in order to use mumsnet.

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 11:36
Hmm

You may want to look a bit closer at this ...

  1. I've disabled everything, and can't get to edit my cookie preferences. I am looking on this page : www.mumsnet.com/info/privacy-policy for the "privacy settings" button, but there isn't one.

  2. going to my account ... settings, I don't see a privacy toggle either.

also, ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/lawful-basis-for-processing/consent/ seems to suggest that a "select all" option for cookies isn't really the way forward ? Admittedly debatable in the absence of caselaw ...

HTH HAND.

@DGRossetti

Thanks for your reply.

I notice you mention upthread that you've disabled NoScript - could it be that this is why you aren't seeing the Privacy Toggle? The toggle does seem to be there at the moment - at the bottom right of the screen. Is it possible for you to send a screen shot if this isn't appearing at all?

The pop-up we use adheres to the IAB framework on cookie consent management. Although there is an 'accept all' button there is also the option to adjust your preferences if you select 'show purposes'

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 13:32

If I disable NoScript, I get the eternal pop up ...

Site unusable ?

WordInYourShellLike · 11/02/2019 14:38

Having looked at the thread you linked to JanineMumsnet, it's interesting that this all started last September but is not yet resolved for everyone. I haven't changed my settings in that time, I've used Adblock Plus and Privacy Badger for at least a year (probably a lot longer). I only encountered the problem out of the blue a few days ago. What have Quantcast had to say about this? I have messaged and tweeted them but no response has been forthcoming. Every website I use has a button to click with regards to cookies permissions and yet only the websites I visit for which Quantcast has provided the tech have caused me these problems. Buzzfeed I can do without but I'd be very sad to be forced to give up on Mumsnet.

JanineMumsnet · 12/02/2019 08:38

@WordInYourShellLike do you also use Firefox too? If so these instructions I linked upthread might be useful for you addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

@DGRossetti Upthread you said by turning NoScript off the problem went away? Could you just clarify.

DGRossetti · 12/02/2019 09:09

I may have gotten tabs mixed up Blush

Right now, site is working nicely:

NoScript is enabled, but allowing mumsnet.com , bootstrapcdn.com and gstatic.com
AdBlock is enabled
PrivacyBadger is enabled

Firefox 65.0 (64-bit) on Linux Mint (Kernel and CPU Linux 4.18.0-13-generic on x86_64)

HTH HAND Smile

OP posts:
JanineMumsnet · 12/02/2019 09:14

@DGRossetti Really glad to see it's working. Glad there is a workaround for this.

WordInYourShellLike · 15/02/2019 18:11

I've found a straightforward solution now to this problem without having to disable Adblock Plus or Privacy Badger (which I was loathe to do) by using an add-on that is available. I went to fanboy.co.nz/ (odd name but legit website) and clicked on 'Add Annoyance List' which then adds this to your browser. I think 'Add Anti-Cookie Messages' might also work. This has worked in Firefox - no idea if it would work in other browsers.
