I know I've been away for a bit, but where did this come from in my absence??

tbh, I do find it a bit distasteful to have it there.

not wishing to be controversial at all. But v. curious.

whoops sorry, "the british govt has defined its wars as legal" of course

EffiePerine · 22/06/2007 22:15

governments don't decide on legality, that's a fundamental distinction in our system

So, according to your definition of legality, NN, we should not have gone to war against Nazi Germany?

Nightynight · 22/06/2007 22:18

effie, that is plain naive.

littlelapin, you are right about the govt being responsible...take the logic one step further - you KNOW what they are like, so why join up, and become cannon fodder or a killer, to make them richer?

WWII - as I said, I am not a pacifist, therefore I dont believe that murdering people is never justified. I am undecided about WWII, as I dont believe the official version as written by the winners. It probably was justified, but not as much as we are led to believe in the UK.
god, that is bound to annoy a lot of people who accept the official version unquestioningly.

why the aggression littlelapin?
why should I be on a roll? killing or being killed is part of the job of many members of the armed forces isnt it? isnt that the nub of the your problems?

EffiePerine · 22/06/2007 22:24

it is an important distinction. You're having an ethical debate here, so you should be precise after all. Not saying that government policy doesn't influence the judiciary, but as far as I remember they are still separate.

anyway, Ethics 101

jinxed · 22/06/2007 22:24

Surely this is a debate regarding GOVERNMENT policies, not of whether we are allowed a topic to discuss normal life for us accompanying serving personel.

Nightynight · 22/06/2007 22:25

A bit more questioning of official propaganda, might lead to a bit less organised violence in the world.

Desiderata · 22/06/2007 22:26

Oh, dear, NN. I really think you need to change you name after this evening.

'The official version of WWII.' You wouldn't be denying the holocaust, would you?

EffiePerine · 22/06/2007 22:27

it is a truism to say that history was written by the winners

fair enough

but you have a distinction here

is a particular war justified

and what about those people who are employed by the country (not 'the government', am tired of that phrase) to do the job of war? and peacekeeping for that matter

why on earth should I change my name?

EffiePerine · 22/06/2007 22:29

'propaganda'

tired of that as well

jinxed · 22/06/2007 22:29

Has anyone actually answered my question as to WHY a topic for armed forces families is offensive? A topic to offer support and understanding such as those titled "lone parents" or "gay parents"

Someone PLEASE tell me what the original issue is!

EffiePerine · 22/06/2007 22:30

if you are going to criticise the use of armed force you may as well say something new and interesting

Desiderata · 22/06/2007 22:31
