Mumsnet moderation of trans rights and gender critical issues

JustineMumsnet · 13/06/2018 09:31

Hi all,
We've given lots of thought to our moderation policies around trans rights and sex and gender issues and thought it would be a good idea to articulate where we stand in the form of a clear statement, so everyone can be clear about our moderation going forward. You can find it here. Hope it provides a helpful reference point. Thanks.

Balanced? I suppose.

It balances truth and lies and gives them equal weight.

"The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread." Anatole France pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Thibault (1844-1924)

Well they are taking the Spartacus thread down. What a surprise

What now?

ToeToToe · 13/06/2018 18:56

I am disgusted that L Madigan is a Labour Party Women's Officer.

I am disgusted that H Peto is a Labour Party Parliamentary candidate on an all-women shortlist.

I am disgusted that Munroe Bergdorf got to film a C4 documentary "What makes a woman" and will be a keynote speaker at the BFI "Women with a Movie Camera" event.

I am disgusted that Paris Lees compared women's fear of male sexual violence to "an irrational fear of escalators."

I am disgusted that Maria McLachlan was forced by a judge to call her attacker "she".

I am disgusted that Jennifer James and Venice Allan were suspended from the labour party for saying women don't have penises.

Women and girls matter. Biology matters. I'd have thought Mumsnet Towers should be more than aware of that.

Kudos to AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth for braking the final rule! Can't help but admire the audacity.

We won’t allow aggressive or rude behaviour towards our moderation team.

@MNHQ, this is a bogus policy.

Or do you really just want us to fuck off? Because many of us will, but I can guarantee that this issue won't go away. And it will come back to bite you in the arse sooner or later.

Ilikelotsofthinngs · 13/06/2018 19:00

There is a new Spartacus thread. Sorry I can't link. Doubt it will last long. Bye bye mumsnet Feminism and free speech. I'm gutted

LunaTrap · 13/06/2018 19:00

Crunchymint is spot on. The large feminist contingent with their intelligence and well researched posts is the sole reason I continue to read MN over other sites. I have no interest in the 20 page troll threads or the increasing array of perverts. If the feminists go MN had lost its only unique feature.

9toenails · 13/06/2018 19:01

I join with those who think you're mistaken here, MN.

... it’s clear that most trans people find the use of pronouns or names that they or others have consciously rejected, to be hurtful and would therefore struggle to engage in a discussion with those who insist on using them.

Ugh. 'People are upset by the truth so we should tell lies and pretend to believe nonsense so they can 'engage in discussion'.' Wrong. Obviously wrong.

And so on.

In brief, you capitulate explicitly to the forces of unreason. Spurious claims of even-handedness, as ever, makes such capitulation worse.

Pusillanimity? 'Money talks'? Or do you really not understand? I'm not sure which is worst. It is disappointing, though.

You don't really care, do you Justine?

SarahAr · 13/06/2018 19:01

I am disgusted that Maria McLachlan was forced by a judge to call her attacker "she".

Not true. Maria was given the option to refer to her attacker as the defendant. Instead Maria continued to misgender her attacker.

LunaTrap · 13/06/2018 19:02

And if anyone gets banned for calling a convicted rapist a man you will have seriously lost the plot.

JoanSummers · 13/06/2018 19:02

At least Ruth Hunt had the sense to get paid to get down on her knees for men.

A more apt analogy might be that RH is paid to force other lesbians to get down on their knees.

But you're right, MN earns nothing from forcing women to their knees. So why do it? How can they possibly believe that this is the path of "niceness"??

ToeToToe · 13/06/2018 19:02

Maria was given the option to refer to her attacker as the defendant. Instead Maria continued to misgender her attacker.

^ And this is what we must fight against. Maria correctly gendered her attacker in court.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 13/06/2018 19:04

Ahem, it's 'breaking'. Unless you want me to be stopping that 'final rule'.

There is nothing abusive in my post. You don't understand language. Or debate. And that's only part of the problem

But once more, we see what you are

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 13/06/2018 19:04

Should really have finished the thread before posting that last one

I am honestly gob smacked at the fact that the Spartacus thread has been deleted

Its a complete rewriting of history, and I honestly dont see the point...pure capitulation

I'm also disappointed as i was reading thread with an open mind...not ecstatic but it could have been worse

so i was on that Spartacus thread ages ago, i call trans women transwomen i use thoughtful pronouns...but on that thread i said that i will not call a man who rapes (it happened to be a child) with his penis a woman...ever

LunaTrap · 13/06/2018 19:04

Defending a woman being stopped from calling her male attacker 'he'- so progressive.

LadyLauraOver · 13/06/2018 19:05

So the mighty Mumsnet has fallen. Brought to it's knees by men who infiltrate women's spaces and rights.

Imagine not being allowed to call a tiger a tiger. Out in the wilds of nowhere and you see a tiger hunting you and your friends. You shout out a warning "run! a thing that cannot be named is chasing you!" By the time they understood the tiger would have eaten them.

Mumsnet, I am saddened. Since the Emma incident I de-registered and re-registered for safety. Safety? On a forum mostly for women. Unsafe because of a female employee?

Now I rarely come on here as the moderation seems heavy handed and the men supporting those men who dress like women are always here too. Not to add anything constructive but to monitor and silence the dissenters. And Mumsnet are allowing this. Sad times. Chalk up 1 ex purchaser for your adverts. I think I'm done.

crunchymint · 13/06/2018 19:05

If someone gets banned for calling Ian Huntley a man, then some of the press will have a field day attack MN.
I don't even know what Ian Huntley is now calling himself by the way.

SupermatchGame · 13/06/2018 19:06

Please supply a Mumsnet-approved term

How about just using the terms that individuals have said they wished to be referred by? Respecting people's identities?

Feminists have always believed in the right to self determination and the autonomy of identity. That used to be the hill they would die on.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 13/06/2018 19:06

'Habitual liars' is right

Abso-fucking-lutely

crunchymint · 13/06/2018 19:07

Also wanted to add, MN threaten stuff like this every so often. Some posters get banned, then they backtrack. And I assume that is because they know that MN has to have a unique url. And that means keeping the feminists. It does not actually make business sense to ban all the feminists. MN relies on traffic to its site. And parking threads alone are not going to do that.

crunchymint · 13/06/2018 19:09

supermatchgame I want to always be referred to as an amazing woman.

tobee · 13/06/2018 19:09

People have a funny idea about what's progressive Hmm
