Shiny new thread.

Hopefully won't get derailed.

And now references to 'genuine disabled' on a thread about benefits.

Le sigh.

Oh yes the "I've worked with people with disabilities so I know everything there is to know about disability ever" really bugs me.
I volunteer in a nursery two days a week (unless I'm really bad like today) and there's two children there who have downs syndrome. They are completely different and have different needs. Just because the diagnosis is the same doesn't mean the people are.

HerSpookyFattyness · 17/10/2016 17:35

BBA (love your name btw) it's comments like that which make me feel like a fraud, like I'm less deserving. I actually asked on that thread if I'm better than the other benefit claimants for not claiming disability benefits or worse because I don't get disability benefits?

BishopBrennansArse · 17/10/2016 17:37

Don't call me Len Wink

EverySongbirdSays · 17/10/2016 17:40

Ah yes "Obviously, I'm not talking about you because YOU'RE GENUINE" "It's all these others"

And you know ALL their individual circumstances as well as you know mine, because... Hmm

EverySongbirdSays · 17/10/2016 17:44

Fatty as weird as it looks it works

CandyMcJingles · 17/10/2016 17:45

Songbird I'll get that story out of you!

Ah yes the "genuinely disabled". That phrase always makes me think of poor ol tiny Tim and his crutch in Scrooge.

All these non genuine disabled people hey! Cos it's so much fun to pretend to be disabled and be treated with contempt and suspicion.

When asked to elaborate on who is "genuinely disabled" it usually involved wheelchair or missing limbs or severe learning disabilities . You know, those who can't work.

And they think they are benevolent because you know it's ok to give benefits to the "genuinely disabled"

PEOPLE! Benefit fraud is less than 1% !!!!

It s fucking difficult to get benefits !!!!

YHGAFC

And when it's pointed out that they are being disablist for perpetuating the myth that people with disabilities are lying scrounges, they will refuse to accept this. And others will leap to their defence. And MN will let it stand.

Or maybe not? Maybe they will surprise us? Over to you MNHQ.

CandyMcJingles · 17/10/2016 17:46

Fatty the dock things are ace. I've tried them and they do the biz.

CandyMcJingles · 17/10/2016 17:50

Sock!

MaddyHatter · 17/10/2016 17:50

i get called a scrounger because i gave up my job to look after DS DH works full time but i run the house on DLA, CB and CTC and we would be screwed without them.

I haven't claimed Carers allowance yet because i'm told CTC will essentially take exactly that amount back off me, so it kind of seems pointless.

HerSpookyFattyness · 17/10/2016 17:54

Thanks songbird will have to try it, it would be a great help for me.

CandyMcJingles · 17/10/2016 18:01

I thnk we can also beat ourselves up. When I was retired from work on medical grounds (their choice, not mine) after three redeployments (their choice, not mine) i seriously had to deal with my own self identity crisis. What was I if not a worker? What was I without my career? I studied for years to gain qualifications. I chose to go back after maternity leave, it wasn't my choice to retire at age 41. There are serious financial implications for my family. There is more pressure on my DH to provide financially. My peers are having successful careers and more lavish lifestyles.
Yet I know others think I'm jammy because I don't work.
I find myself justified my position a lot.
I'm deafblind. I've lost 95% of my vision so far. Yet people think I am lucky.

EverySongbirdSays · 17/10/2016 18:19

It's awful/exhausting having to feel like you have to justify your right to ordinary things constantly. Employment, love, sex, family, support, transport etc etc etc

Mozfan1 · 17/10/2016 18:34

I'm just shocked reading these stories, that this shit still happens in 2016... Fuck me

Disability is real, every disabled person is different, no disabled person is defined by their disability. We need to open our fucking eyes, wobble our heads and get a grip.

UmbongoUnchained · 17/10/2016 18:55

Are there any decent forums aimed specifically for diabled/carers?

EverySongbirdSays · 17/10/2016 19:09

I have no idea.

I hate segregated stuff passionately, segregation is the problem not the solution.

UmbongoUnchained · 17/10/2016 19:17

Ok I was asking for myself, not trying to offend anyone..

CandyMcJingles · 17/10/2016 19:28

I've tried previously to set up a chat thread umbongo but not many takers.

I think our challenge here is to get all MNetters to understand what a disablist comment looks and sounds like.

BishopBrennansArse · 17/10/2016 19:32

I think the you're able site used to have forums, don't know if they still do?

OP posts:
UmbongoUnchained · 17/10/2016 19:34

Thanks will take a look elsewhere.

It is weird isn't it, that if we defend ourselves we are sneered at.

If we defended ourselves against racism or science, can you imagine the reaction if anyone sneered at that?

And the sneerers don't undated that they are being disablist.

Ausernotanumber · 17/10/2016 19:56

I'm tired of it today. I took my disabled DC to the doctor surgery today and we git the stares in the waiting room.

The hcp we saw (I can't spell plebotomist) was lovely but I am sick sore and fed up being judged. I am doing my fucking best and if you think you can do it better feel free to try.

Ausernotanumber · 17/10/2016 19:56

Not you lot. You the judgey folk in the surgery.

BishopBrennansArse · 17/10/2016 20:02

You spelled it correctly apart from an h. Phlebotomist Wink
