Why is Mumsnet insisting that I log in?

CrispEater · 17/08/2016 09:58

I spend quite a lot of time browsing Mumsnet on my Samsung tablet, not logged in. I rarely post anything but if I do, I do that on my PC because I can type quicker on a proper keyboard.
Just now I was in Mumsnet on the tablet and kept getting a pop-up that insists I should either log in or join. As far as I can see, there is no way of getting rid of this pop-up except by logging in or joining or giving up on Mumsnet. It looks very genuine to me.
I really can't be bothered to keep logging in when I only want to browse and I hate being forced into doing something I'd rather not do.
Is there some reason why Mumsnet now wants everyone logged in all the time? Or have I missed something?

Very long time lurker here and this is a seriously bad decision, reading threads here and there, can get people through the day, make people laugh, cry, share and to be very honest feel less alone. Having to log in doesn't take a second or even a minute it's a royal pain in the arse, hopefully MNHQ will listen to those opposing the forced log in. Angry

lifesalongsong · 17/08/2016 20:59

I'm really surprised by the number of posters who aren't logged in on their phones all the time. Am I doing something wrong by never logging out.

That said I would find it very annoying to be forced to log in to browse if I didn't normally have to do that

Amylea24 · 17/08/2016 21:00

Please remove the login pop up for iphones, its extremely annoying!

EssexMummy1234 · 17/08/2016 21:00

I don't think user opinion was canvassed on this, correct me if I'm wrong - targeted advertising might be huge financially for mumsnet - and surely targeted content = targeted advertising

bigger sites have fallen by the wayside though,

And if you're not logged in you don't get the OPs posts highlighted and you have to have pages afaik, both of which are a total pita, how do you all put up with that

namechange34 · 17/08/2016 21:03

another poster here who reset password just to log on and say this is an awful idea and I will be staying away until this is dropped. I don't feel secure leaving it logged in on my phone and a night feed can easily end up with more than 10 pages of content read. I'm off to investigate reddit now since others seem to be recommending it...

scoobydooagain · 17/08/2016 21:04

Don't like it, always logged on from my laptop but not phone, work or tablet. Another one who lurked for a long time before joining, think it will put off a lot of people just starting with MN

Justonemorecupoftea · 17/08/2016 21:04

What iloverhubarbcrumble said. Looks like I'm going to have a tidier house and better supervised children in future!

I only ever click on links in fb don't like to be logged in when just browsing, I will most likely unfollow you on Facebook and leave site.
Feel saddened by this as its been great reading completely random threads/chats while avoiding housework and watching newborn sleep!

SomethingSimple · 17/08/2016 21:19

I've just logged in to say I don't like it and it interferes with how I like to use MN. I browse on my phone and don't like to be logged in and log in when at home.

FreezerBird · 17/08/2016 21:21

Oh, it's infuriating. I don't leave myself logged in as I don't have internet on my phone so all the devices I look at MN on are shared. I log in to post (occasionally) and then log out again.

Also, I really dislike the way the pop-up sort of shimmies onto my screen in a 'don't mind me, I'll just wiggle in here' sort of way which makes me want to throw things. (Possibly irrational.)

ClashCityRocker · 17/08/2016 21:22

This is a silly idea, given the nature of the site.

Many people do not wish to log on - there's plenty of threads asking for advice and support written by posters in very precarious situations where it would be potentially risky to log on to access the support on a shared device - it's often mentioned on the relationship boards not to log on on a shared device as it is so easy to forget to log out.

I know a lot of people who use the forum for advice, as it pops up in google searches. They may lurk on a thread but would be unlikely to sign up just to read a thread when they could probably just go back to google.

A lot of posters also lurked for a while before joining. If that message had popped up after ten pages, I wouldn't have joined unless it was a thread I felt I really had something to say or wanted to be involved in, whereas i was happy to join after a much more better feel of the sight.

Finally, I'm. Not sure what you're hoping to achieve. today for example, Ive been reading a thread or two in baby names, the doghouse and living overseas. I have no kids, no dogs, or intention of having either, nor have I or am I likely to live overseas... So how are you going to personalise it exactly?

hotdiggedy · 17/08/2016 21:29

Mhm, it is quite annoying to be honest.

whereonthestair · 17/08/2016 21:30

I also find it infuriating and it will possibly send me away from the site altogether. I browse on my phone, one iPad and a computer which is not secure. I only post on the iPad i am currently using. I do not want to log in on the other devices, so if I have to I will stop browsing. If I stop browsing on those devices I may well be less bothered to catch up in this device. I don't do Facebook, or various other social media sites and if I have to log in I suspect I will add mn to my other Luddite ways. Bad bad idea.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 17/08/2016 21:38

With the hacking last year, people are going to be a tad paranoid. I don't need adverts tailored specifically to me - between this and the pop ups, you are going to lose users at a huge rate.

NewIdeasToday · 17/08/2016 21:39

It's really, really annoying.

Please stop the trial because it's clearly annoying a lot of your loyal users.

OlafsCarrot · 17/08/2016 21:40

MN.. It's really annoying to be forced to log in.
As well as looking like the work of a Jeff because you didn't give us an option NOT to log in.

I will use MN a lot less if this is a permanent requirement because for lots of reasons I don't want to be logged in to browse.

user1470771898 · 17/08/2016 21:41

I'm another voting No - please remove the compulsory log in.

MangosteenSoda · 17/08/2016 21:42

Haven't been on MN for several weeks since the login requirement started because it's such a pain in the bum as my phone refuses to stay logged on.

Doubt I'll use MN much if this continues.

BarryTheKestrel · 17/08/2016 21:43

I usually use the Facebook page to view threads I may otherwise not see. Now I can't as as soon as I click on them I'm prompted to log in because the Facebook browser is different to the one I use on my phone, which I am always logged in on.

I have therefore stopped clicking on the Facebook links because it's infuriating.

Please take it off. I do not wish to log in on the work computers when I'm bored.
I don't trust the bastards not to have keyloggers or something.
I don't care that they see me on here but I don't wan't them to possibly see my details.
Browsing on my phone drains my battery life .
