Why is Mumsnet insisting that I log in?

CrispEater · 17/08/2016 09:58

I spend quite a lot of time browsing Mumsnet on my Samsung tablet, not logged in. I rarely post anything but if I do, I do that on my PC because I can type quicker on a proper keyboard.
Just now I was in Mumsnet on the tablet and kept getting a pop-up that insists I should either log in or join. As far as I can see, there is no way of getting rid of this pop-up except by logging in or joining or giving up on Mumsnet. It looks very genuine to me.
I really can't be bothered to keep logging in when I only want to browse and I hate being forced into doing something I'd rather not do.
Is there some reason why Mumsnet now wants everyone logged in all the time? Or have I missed something?

Just adding my bit of feedback. This is crap MNHQ, for all the reasons already listed and am pretty pissed off about it.
Please stop it.

echt · 18/08/2016 11:19

I am vey fucked off indeed about this.

I feel I am being tracked, when I liked MN's anonymity.

Seriously MNHQ fuck right off.

This exactly, no more mn on my phone ffs, when is the facebook buy out being announced?

100greenbottles · 18/08/2016 11:23

Same here. Just want to browse anonymously from various devices, I'm off if this stays. Absolutely do not want filtered content.

Vipermisnomer · 18/08/2016 11:23

was trying to quote TeaAndCake there btw Angry

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 18/08/2016 11:24

Hate it.

FinkPloyd · 18/08/2016 11:24

I think you're going to lose visitors due to this 😡

Getting more & more irritated with each occasion.

Gyderlily · 18/08/2016 11:25

Very very annoying dancing around in front of me when I am trying to read something! Problem is it doesnt seem to keep me logged in when I do so constantly having to re do it... Plus it does t keep you on the thread you are trying to read in the first place so then you have to go looking for it .. Or go to the original link on the email and guess what?! Asks you to log in again! At this point I tend to get the rage and give up! Angry

petitpois55 · 18/08/2016 11:27

Tis the reason i don't use Pinterest. All that having to log in bolloxAngry

flowery · 18/08/2016 11:31

It doesn't affect me on MN as I stay logged in the whole time anyway, but whenever I go to any other site that does this (by following a link or Google search or something), I just click off immediately and don't go back.

PartTimePunk · 18/08/2016 11:37

Christ this reminds me of one of those AIBU threads where Mumsnet is united in a chorus of "Yes! YABU", and the OP (MNHQ) maintains that they are being perfectly reasonable despite all evidence to the contrary.

IamtheZombie · 18/08/2016 11:49

Zombie lurked for at least 6 months before joining MN. By "lurked" she means at least an hour a day getting to know the site. Had this been in place then, she would never have joined.

MardyBra · 18/08/2016 11:52

That is so sad hadron.

Also can I say that the 10 views thing is nothing. I flit from thread to thread until i find one that engages me enough to read it. So many thread titles are really vague do you don't quite know that you're getting. I can use up 10 presses going between active convos and various threads in about 2 mins

Psyfuck · 18/08/2016 11:57

I had deleted my account after hackergate, but read MN pretty much every day. I find it a useful site in so many ways - it's helped me, entertained me, amused me, moved me and educated me and stops me having to actually do any of that tiresome 'work' shit while I am getting paid...However, now I have been forced to rejoin - and that in itself was a massive pain in the arse as I had deleted my old account and only had the one email - MN apparently won't let you rejoin using the same email, so I've had to fart about with all of that, new user name, new password, AND log in from work. NOT happy. Why can't you just 'test' us but let us have an opt out from logging in?? I was quite happy lurking, thank you very much Sad

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 18/08/2016 11:58

I'm permanently logged in so I wouldn't know about this if it wasn't for the thread, tbh. But if I'm going to a new site & there's a popup I can't get rid of - especially on my phone - I just leave.

LondonYogaSuz · 18/08/2016 12:05

Yup not happy Angry

I deregistered as was unhappy with how the hacking/phishing debacle was managed and now have had to create a new email just to access and read (don't usually post).

I ventured into Nethuns yesterday but couldn't take it any longer.

An advance message might have helped instead of just implementing this yesterday, again bad management of change.

*grumps off Angry

Haffdonga · 18/08/2016 12:07

I think what has upset me more than anything about this is weasel words and lack of up-front honesty from MNHQ.

We all KNOW that what you mean when you say you want to add more personalisation in the future to improve user experience by showing more relevant, useful content actually means you want to be able to target advertising more specifically at target demographics, to generate more income from marketing etc. And there's nothing actually wrong with that. Why not be honest with us? You used to be.

But MN, trying to tell us that this is all for our own good and should be an improvement for the majority of people is bullshit. How stupid do you think we are? Thanking us for all the useful feedback which you haven't actually asked us for? (Because you knew exactly what the feedback would be and didn't want to highlight what you were doing). Give us some credit, please.

I always respected MN and thought that one of the things that made it a unique and better site than others was its honesty and transparency - explaining its decisions and acknowledging mistakes. It behaved decently. I'm very sad that this no longer seems to be the case.

LovingKent · 18/08/2016 12:08

Glad to hear this isn't a virus or due to hacking which I thought it was when I first saw the pop up. i don't like it either - would prefer to be given the option to log in or not. Most of the time I'm just having a quick read and don't stayed logged in due to security concerns.

Gyderlily · 18/08/2016 12:10

Well I came back to read the updates and had to log in YET AGAIN
I was a lurker for a long time but have become more active recently as I've got the hang of the site but I'm afraid I've hit re logged in (for about the 6th time today) to say I won't be back on on a regular basis like I was before! It's too much effort especially as my attempts to change the password failed and I have to go back and retrieve this ridiculously long combination of letters and numbers each time! Utterly infuriating, I have no issue scrolling by content that is not relevant to me.. Sometimes I even enjoy reading some of it! Confused

FallenAngel22 · 18/08/2016 12:12

I am a long time lurker and it's taken me over half an hour to log in as it says I have an invalid email address?! Not amused!

magimedi · 18/08/2016 12:13

Agree with Zombie. If I hadn't been able to lurk I would never have joined.

Waves to Mrs Vamos - we've missed you on the tennis threads. Tennis

Bluegrass · 18/08/2016 12:17

This massively increases the chances of people being outed, something which is an obvious consequence of this change and which ought to have been at the forefront of MN HQ's mind given the nature of the information people often reveal on here.

It is staggering to think that they must have considered this and still came to the conclusion - fuck it, let's force them all to log in anyway.

Truly staggering, shows real contempt to users.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 18/08/2016 12:30

Yes Pinterest - every time I google something and it comes up with a Pinterest link I don't bother clicking on it because I know I'll get a glimpse and then be confronted with their stupid log in box that creeps up and stops you seeing the page. So frustrating.

I do have a Pinterest account but I can't be arsed logging in whenever I want to look so I just go elsewhere.

Great business model to follow MN!
