Banning the term "cis"

OlennasWimple · 06/07/2016 23:36

Apologies if this had already been done, but can MNHQ consider banning the term "cis", given how horrifically offensive so many users of MN find it?

I don't think I need to set out the background and reasoning to this request (but can do so if it would help!)

I am a cis woman and quite happy to specify that when necessary in discussions about biological sex and gender. I genuinely think that anyone offended by it is quite simply either a bit ignorant or a bigot.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/07/2016 16:34

It must be a hard call for MNHQ when people are horrifically offended by the contents of the dictionary.

Ban the OED!

Samcro · 07/07/2016 16:35

wow been following with interest.
sad that mn hq won't step up and put a stop to this offensive made up bollocks.

So sian, you think that everyone has to have a gender as well as a biological sex? You don't think assumptions about female gender have been in anyway harmful to people who happen to biologically female?

Notwhatiexpected · 07/07/2016 16:39

Samcro
"once again women have lost to the loud men."

Yup, you are correct. I am living this, but I am howling into the wind here. My voice means nothing. Just like in real life.

Good for you sian . Do you know what bigot means though? Grin

Pot, kettle black. Wink

FloraFox · 07/07/2016 16:39

making a term up to describe a group of people is perfectly legit, that's how literally every group desription is made.

So what is the name for the group of people who were born with female reproductive organs? It's a useful name to describe that group which is often killed before or after birth, denied an education, subjected to forced birth, earns less than another group, is subjected to high rates of sexual violence, are killed at a rate of 2 per week by their male partners etc. Can anyone think of a name for that group?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 07/07/2016 16:40

This epitomises EPITOMISES an only on MN is this a problem type issue
YABU, hide thread

and don't even bother arguing with people on this, its a complete fucking waste of time and energy- there is a vocal minority but as the wise man said "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2016 16:42

'gender critical' - thanks. Its a bit meh, I was hoping for something more like 'antigenderist'. So, if we say we're gender critical then we obviously can't be cis?

TheRealPosieParker · 07/07/2016 16:43

Lets talk about stats.

I can find no evidence that transgender teens commit suicide more than gay teens. They say they think about attempting suicide, but then who is asking? I can tell you men 45-59 are most likely to take their own lives.

I can tell you that more women are sexually abused in public than transwomen, that women are far more likely to be verbally abused in public than transwomen.

I can tell you that kids with ASD or Aspergers get bullied the most at school.

TheRealPosieParker · 07/07/2016 16:44

7% of rapes in the UK are in a public place by someone the victim does not know.

"Yeah, I like my definition better, because it doesn't hurt a sh*tton of people"

I like my imaginary friend better than most people but he is not real.

Much like your definition.

FYI (1) you can't go around defining words in the English language to suit your agenda.

and (2) defining womanhood as just a fancy in some people's heads, male and female, DOES actually hurt a shitload of people.

If you can't imagine how, we can start educating you at your earliest convenience.

OurBlanche · 07/07/2016 16:46

I genuinely think that anyone offended by it is quite simply either a bit ignorant or a bigot.

I genuinely don't know how many more times or how many more ways I can say this: I AM A WOMAN.

WOMAN

It is what I AM.

I needs no clarification as it describes 1 aspect of WHO I AM! It has done so for millenia and will do so for many more.

A man who chooses to identify as a woman IS NOT A WOMAN. They are TRANS WOMEN. And I have absololutely no issue with that, if that is the label they choose to describe themselves. They cannot be WOMAN, as they are not, by biology, by social construct, etc.

I CHOOSE to be OFFENDED by the term cis as it imposes a label on me that has absolutely nothing to do with me. It is a construct placed upon me and my identity by one cohort of society which has chosen, unilaterally, to make me and other WOMEN a subset of WOMEN instead of simply being WOMEN.

If the term cis, or any other term is to be used then WOMEN should be involved in that decision. Currently, here on MN, there are any number of WOMEN who, like myself, say "No thanks, I don't want a new label, I am happy with the one I have".

Ignorance is to ignore my protest at being relabelled, renamed. Bigotry is to deny my voice on the matter.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2016 16:47

notwhat - don't ever think your voice doesn't matter. Its hearing from people like you that makes some of the rest of us sit up and give a shit.

SorenaJ · 07/07/2016 16:48

siani So many transphobic people. I weep for humanity. They have all been reported. This thread just confirms that transphobia is a very real thing.

FloraFox Transwomen deals with those issues too, so yeah, women. Whatever bits you've got in your pants doesn't matter.

Maryz So if someone is fat, we should't help them lose weight, because they'll probably gain that again. If someone wants to dye their hair blonde, they shouldn't, because they'll never be real blonde? I have honestly never heard anything more transphobic, and you have been reported. Gender dysphoria is a real thing, sorry you're too ignorant to get that.

Bengal Yes, people identify how they identify, you don't have to identify as either trans or cis, and people should respect.

hazeyjane Because a transman is a man as well. A cis man is not more of a man than a transman is, and is not the default man. So, man is general, but can be subdivided into trans and cis man. So man, woman, non-binary. That's all we need.

So is a woman who does not want to be called "cis" automatically being transphobic?

Serena.

Saying someone that is a transwoman isn't a woman is transphobia?

Really?

Being a man or a woman is the default. My god.
