Anti-Religious Trolling On Mumsnet

DioneTheDiabolist · 26/03/2016 00:36

I get that not everyone is religious and that some people are very anti-religious (some with good reasons).

But some MNetters are religious, others are simply curious. So how come so many threads are allowed to be derailed by anti-religious trolls? Today a thread about Good Friday was deleted because a troll came on. FFS, it's Easter! Threads about Islam are regularly derailed by Islamophobes. On a thread seeking information on Judaism in the Philosophy & Religion topic, a troll has posted LMFAO. Ok, serious question, why does the Jewish God make all men wear a funny beards? She continues venting for a few posts before eventually exiting the thread saying that she is on drugs because It's Easter, party time.

She is a MN regular, like most of the anti-religious trolls here. I have reported her posts but they still stand.

Trolls are not interested in knowing what other people think or believe. They have no desire to discuss the point of actual threads and rarely start threads of their own regarding their issues with religion or belief. They just derail threads in the hope of driving all talk of religion and different beliefs off MN. And they are succeeding.

Why are MNHQ allowing this to happen? Deleting threads instead of dealing with posters? Allowing blatant anti-religious trolling to derail threads that people may find supportive or informative? Is MN a religion free zone? Because if it is, that's ok. I just think that religious posters should be told. Then they can go elsewhere if they wish to discuss their beliefs.

But clicking through and seeing what its about and then ignoring would only take a second longer than what you usually do. It seems a weak justification, to me. (I don't blame you for your hatred of religion btw, you have had horrible experiences.)
But I think pretty much everyone has their own dislikes and if we all shut down the conversations we hate tgere would be no conversation at all.

VertigoNun · 26/03/2016 17:47

You don't have to bring me back into it, it's being going on for over a day now. I apologised yesterday and again today about my choice, explained and tried to fix it. I didn't attack you and it feels like you are scapegoatin me for other things in your past in rl on the thread yesterday and today.

7Days · 26/03/2016 17:47

And it's not just you. Its a regular pattern with many posters across the boards.

How many times do you need to repeat the thread title? You used that defence several times.

VertigoNun · 26/03/2016 17:51

It feels like the RoyLe family Golden egg cup thing.

I am out.

7Days · 26/03/2016 17:51

Once you realised, then you had the choice of ignoring as you usually do.

I should have clarified ducky. I didn't mean on this thread or by you, I was talking about numerous other threads, in the past, which discussed the Christian Faith.

This is where we seem to be getting our wires crossed. Often I will be talking about my own experiences in general or on here in the past. Unless I overtly address a point to a person personally ( you have said as opposed to some have said), or ask a question to a particular poster, this is generally the case.

There was another one too where people were talking about signs they find comforting like feathers and were told they are delusional and ought to see a doctor etc.

I've said this on another thread, recently but what really annoys me the most is how it's dressed up as 'concern'. No, you're just uncomfortable about people having these beliefs and you can't deal with it. That is how it comes across.

I realise that maybe some of these people may have been damaged by religion. I have come across some very unpleasant examples of Christians, honestly. And we tend to be informed by our experiences. But I do think it's obvious that some people trawl the board specifically to ridicule people's OP.

buffyajp · 26/03/2016 18:00

Oh fuck you are not debating you are throwing insults around. Can you really not see the difference? Proper debate does not involve the using of words such as sky fairy or other derogatory terms . The same point goes to those other posters who can't seem to differentiate between healthy debate and provocative and antagonistic language. I am sorry if you have had a horrible experience with religion but mine has been the exact opposite. When my son died the local Catholic community provided me and my daughters with enormous support and not once did they put pressure on us or try to convert us. We have all found enormous strength in our faith and I think you would have to be incredibly hard hearted to deny my family and I that even if it is something that you personally cannot understand. All I ask is that you do not try to belittle me for it.

7Days · 26/03/2016 18:02

I did.
But I'm still not seeing it. You could have ignored.
If it turned out to be someone who supported man u in the match at 3 would you hava called it goady clickbait on the grounds you met some horrible soccer fans in your life and football is shit?

No body likes other people's views being shoved down their throats, that goes for the religious amd the non religious.

People do have to tolerate conversations they don't like happening.

VertigoNun · 26/03/2016 18:04

Why do you keep on at me? Seriously now my timing of posting on the thread is being called into question? I had been emailing back and forth with MNHQ before I posted.

Anyway it's not about the golden egg cup, it's about eggy bread.

I would put money on nobody saying that anyone getting comfort from seeing feathers is delusional and should see a doctor. If someone says "I saw a white feather this morning, do you think it's a message for grandma?" I'm going to say "No it isn't- but it's a nice reminder to make you smile and remember" I don't think robins are my mother reincarnated, but every time I see one I think of her because she loved them. Thinking a white feather is a personal message in a country practically overrun with seagulls, pigeons and down pillows and duvets might mean that the person hasn't thought things through very clearly.

But I am a bit concerned that the demand that people should not be challenged on their religions beliefs seems to be being extended to anything they believe. I don't think religious beliefs should have protected status- I certainly don't think that protected status should extend to any supernatural belief.

AndYourBirdCanSing · 26/03/2016 18:09

I completely agree OP- it happens time and time again.

Bloody rude and ignorant.

VertigoNun · 26/03/2016 18:10

It is about the golden egg cup.

It's not about the golden egg cup.

It is about the golden egg cup...

MyFavouriteClintonisGeorge · 26/03/2016 18:10

Another atheist here, posting to support the OP.

I can't think of anywhere else on the site where threads are derailed with such regularity by people whose attitude is that no one should be allowed to discuss the topic because they don't like it.

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2016 18:12

"Bertrand im surprised you have never come across what lottie is talking about. It happens Very frequently. "

Find an example then. Lottie couldn't.

Well if it isn't strictly trolling you could certainly say this thread has been utterly spoiled by the selfish posting and ranting from one particular poster.

Fuckaducky - you are shouting all over this thread and preventing it from moving on. What are you trying to achieve?
