Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

OK, screen shot attached. Hopefully it will show relative sizes, so you can see that the size of font for TIO is ridiculously small still. And I have my view set at 110% for MN because it's too small at 100% in general.

Nanny0gg · 17/03/2016 10:49

TIO was tiny but now is fine. However Watched Threads is still tiny!

I'm on Chrome...

Nanny0gg · 17/03/2016 10:50

I do agree with others, that if the background colours were sorted, this font (typeface Grin) is probably dealable with.

claig · 17/03/2016 10:57

'I do agree with others, that if the background colours were sorted, this font (typeface grin) is probably dealable with.'

I doubt that would really solve it. Have a look at the MNHQ posts with the blue background. It is better than the white, but the real problem is still the thin, scratchy, spidery script which is not easy on the eye.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/03/2016 11:01

For me, on Chrome/laptop/Windows 7 etc, TIO is tiny. Threads I'm Watching, and Threads I Started are both fine, normal size, clear to read although the thread titles are now smaller, but because they're bolded, they can be read ok.
Active is another size again - a lot bigger.

Why the disparity? Why are they not all the same size?

NigellasGuest · 17/03/2016 11:02

I really really like it! Especially having Active and I'm On on the left hand side aswell, because I'm left handed it's more intuitive for me.

I would much prefer to have pages loading quicker, than have these changes though(if I were able to choose). Can't be my computer because other websites I frequent are much faster. I'm on Chrome.

SilverBirchWithout · 17/03/2016 11:15

Looking at ThumbWitchesAbroad 's screen shot, my thread pages are the same. All the headers, side adverts and links appear to have a larger font size than the text content of the thread.

I'm on Safari on an iPad but do not use the App. Also have astigmatism and wear varifocals.

Did anyone else have problems with all their password settings after the change?

Because I did.

Elendon · 17/03/2016 11:23

Other than that, it's fine.

TIO is now smaller, which is Ok bu it's still a different font - why is that?

It's also still grey instead of black. I don't get it. Black is fine. Please use black!

specialsubject · 17/03/2016 11:36

also now getting annoying flicky-flashy blue buttons on the left (laptop). Appear for a second, go away. Doesn't seem to fit aspect ratio of laptop now.

as is general with 'upgrades' - it's a cockup.

GrouchyKiwi · 17/03/2016 11:42

Since I've complained about the font/typeface, I just want to say that I really like the blue "Active" and "I'm On" buttons on the left. It's grand not to have to scroll up (or down) to get to the shortcuts.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/03/2016 11:50

Interesting. After Elendon's post, I thought I'd try the tablet, see what happens.

Login failed the first time, but after I re-entered the password, it was ok and let me in.

It looks a lot better on the tablet (Chrome on Android); TIO is fine on there, for e.g. - but it IS hard to read threads. Too much white space. The laptop is better for reading posts, but has the tiny font on TIO issue. I'm not switching to the tablet though because I HATE typing on the thing - give me a keyboard any day! (No I don't have an external one for my tablet, I probably should)

I was reading this thread on my phone earlier so couldn't see what had changed. Was really worried about all the migraines being induced! Just for balance (and because it is true) I love it JustineMumsnet.
Clean, clear, bright, a good change imo

For me, it's not the look, it's the readability. Old gimmers with weak eyes, astigmatisms and varifocals and/or thick glasses just can't read it, it seems

Sorry no, I'm one who likes it and I do have astigmatism. Wonder if it's a device thing

SenecaFalls · 17/03/2016 11:57

I think they've toned down the whiteness of the background which makes it easier on the eyes. I'm on Firefox, and it does seem better than yesterday.

NoelHeadbands · 17/03/2016 11:58

(I'm also a gimmer with thick glasses but let's not dwell on that)

Safari, on an iPhone (mobile site) and safari on the iPad (desktop site)

BertPuttocks · 17/03/2016 12:21

I'm on Chrome on a laptop.

The TIO page is absolutely tiny.

The main font is legible when people use bold but otherwise it's too faint and wispy. The gap between words seems to be slightly too wide, which makes it feel as though my eyes are dragging along.

The writing at the bottom of the screen (under "Emphasis" and "Links") is even more difficult to read.

The general layout is great though. A change of font or darkness and I'd be very happy.
