Can we have separate board for London

antimatter · 26/02/2016 11:56

Is there possibility to give us that?

I would like to be able to share my findings like a nice coffee shop I visited today and ask others to share their favourite finds.

Talk about local plays (musical theater or theater) or places and walks to visit not necessarily as a tourist but a Londoner.

To talk about history on London and various activities available for grown ups.

I've seen posts like that in chat and other boards in the past but they are hard to search for and obviously some disappear after a certain time.

I think MN should keep the existing MN local boards by borough.

And add a London topic, for all residents, ex-residents (those who miss it and those who don't) visitors, commuters etc

DrSeussRevived · 26/02/2016 19:54

Chip Ot Lay.

I vote for this board!

AnotherNewt · 27/02/2016 08:53

I post quite a lot on schools threads, and of those about specific schools quite a lot are about London schools.

The MN local system by borough doesn't work for London schools.

I think a London topic might sop up some of the metropolitan school reviews threads, but it might need MNHQ to move a few threads pour encourager les autres.

I was just wondering if the promised thinking on this had reached any conclusions.

What reminded me is the number of 'what can we do on a visit to London?' in the run up to this school hols (and another new one today)

I love the idea of a London board.

Great idea, antimatter.

The local boards don't really work for me, for all the reasons stated above.

I also think it would stop the tedious London-hating comments, which would be great.

thecatfromjapan · 31/03/2016 20:27

By the way, we have a lovely and long-standing on-line parenting board in our bit of London, which probably explains why the mumsnet local board is so empty here. We also have a community network thing in our very, very local neighbourhood.
I think a mumsnet London board would offer something that isn't available yet and be quite successful.

Thanks for all the support.

I am also waiting for the decision!

Smile ... and in the spirit of LondonNet, may I tell you about a teeny place in Tooting I've found? You know how Morrican-style bags are (still) fashionable? Well, there's a dry-cleaners in Tooting (go out of Tooting Briadway station, walk along the road towards Tooting Bec, past TK Maxx, turn left into the road Kahal Tandoori is on and it's there,) that brings in Moroccan artefacts.

A lot of the bags are reasonably priced. Although they are definitely artisanal (some are not lined; often no pocket for mobile phone), many are lovely - I bought one and it looks like something I'd have bought from Plumo.

Come on, BIWI, post your recommendations for top gin haunts in the capital. Grin

BIWI · 31/03/2016 20:58
Grin

Sadly I only have one recommendation - Charlotte's Bistro in Chiswick, where they do gin school every Monday

thecatfromjapan · 31/03/2016 21:04

That, for me, proves conclusively that a London Board would be a Good Thing. Smile

antimatter · 31/03/2016 23:35

You need to book for gin tasting in this place but I recommend it, it's 5 min walk Tottenham Court Rd station

not far from there is a bar which is also perfect for trying different gins

I also think this is a great idea.

Oh and this is a rather marvellous gin / cocktail bar!

DonkeyOaty · 01/04/2016 00:01

It's a Yes PLEASE from moi.

I am occasionally to be found pounding the streets of London (not pounding more like stumping along with my withered leg, ah well) in the course of my work and much as I adore the yoghurt and fig jam on the breakfast menu at Comptoir Lebanais (sp) I would love to peep into local recs. Iyswim.

Anyhoo.

CaurnieBred · 01/04/2016 00:24

I would like a London board too.

SilverBirchWithout · 01/04/2016 00:53

Do they not have Trip Advisor in that there Lundun?

Seriously it seems odd that there's not a separate place for Londoners to go and angst about their very special property and school problems and worry about the specific beans in their coffee and chat about sewing on the pearly buttons.

It would give the rest of us more space to talk about our whippets, cream teas , quaint rural crafts and London commuters forcing up our property prices so there is no place for local people to live

antimatter · 01/04/2016 01:02

yeah, Trip Advisor will have special board for moroccan bags off Tooting High St

how I am looking forward to that!

Sad news about Time Out, I used to love reading it! Sad

antimatter · 17/04/2016 22:28

Any news about this request.

I just discovered that if you need to transfer for instance monthly ticket from Oyster card you've lost the new one, the new cart has to be used at least once inthe last 8 weeks! It means that I will have to pay tomorrows full ticket price for a day before I can use it for that purpose.

I didn't have spare card at home and got one tonight, went online to do the transfer to find I can't... The person on chat they provide didn't tell me about it.
I am VERY cross as I could have sorted it yesterday but touching card by making one stop travel on the bus for £1.50. Instead I would pay much more tomorrow.

Transfer happens overnight so I can only request it tomorrow after using my new card during the day.
This small bit of info is quite expensive if you don't know about it.
Sharing just na case anyone will have to do it one day.

Such a good idea - I'm in.

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 19/04/2016 07:59

FWIW I think all the boards are too atomised. I'm a browser - I like to stumble across threads that I wouldn't have thought to look for, and the more topics there are, the less likely this is to happen.

Having said that I can see the point of Scotsnet, mainly because their legal and education systems are quite different to those in England, Wales and NI.

I'd like to see the local boards amalgamated into regions. That way London would get its own local section, and I wouldn't have to check the several possible boards in my own area of the UK. I really do think it would liven the local boards up no end to do this.

prettybird · 25/04/2016 18:41

The other "problem" with MN Local is that you can't access your local boards from the app Hmm

thecatfromjapan · 30/04/2016 22:53

I'd still like this ...
