Trans people being allowed to compete against women in the Olympics

OhShutUpThomas · 24/01/2016 09:37

The Olympics are now allowing men who have taken hormones for 12 months compete against women.

It is NOT transphobic to say that this is grossly unfair and a huge violation of women's rights.

Women who have trained all their lives cannot be expected to compete against people with male bodies and who will be allowed roughly 4 times the normal female testosterone levels.

It's not on. We can't stand for it.

Please get behind this mumsnet. Someone needs to take a stand.

It's NOT transphobic to state that this is unfair. It really isn't.

It's as much a parenting issue as "no more page 3"

fidel1ne · 26/01/2016 07:49

Again, the comparison with We Believe You is useful - that was no more obviously a parenting issue than this.

Very true.

It's as much a parenting issue as "no more page 3"

And this. Part of parenting is striving for a fair society with opportunity for everyone, isn't it?

TiggyD · 26/01/2016 07:57

I took the poll to mean 'do you support the ioc or do you protest against the ioc'. Mumsnet official campaign would be a totally different issue.

briss · 26/01/2016 08:35

*Not only is there a pretty unanimous view on mumsnet, there is also a notable lack of trans people coming out to support this anywhere online.

It's lunacy. Even trans people are not arguing against the backlash - there IS no argument that can be made.*

Yes the argument is that a year of female hormones makes you lose muscle density so you have exactly the same physical make up as a woman. There's research and everything Hmm

fidel1ne · 26/01/2016 09:06

Mimsy just raised a good point on the poll thread. That thread isn't showing up in 'Trending'. Why not?

We have to have a very clear majority of posters who back campaigns before we will support them and we don't have that with this issue.

I think there is a very clear majority of posters who want you to campaign, despite it not being on trending.

For the avoidance of doubt, perhaps Mumsnet could clarify what a very clear majority is by giving us figures of support regarding other campaigns.

I wonder if it's possible for mnhq to "hide" a thread from Trending.

I'm sure that I remember them saying it was in some previous bunfight

Elendon · 26/01/2016 09:23

I can understand the fears of those who say that this will down Mumsnet, but in the spirit of the Suffragette movement, they faced terrible backlashes and never gave up!

@OhShutUpThomas

Thank you for the reply MNHQ.

But in not sure where you've got the idea that there are 'mixed feelings' on this.
On this thread, and the other (with 650+ replies) NOT ONE PERSON thinks that it is fair to allow people who are biologically female to be forced to compete against people who are biologically male.

NOT ONE.

If you don't want to get behind the campaign, then fine. It's your decision. But please don't bullshit us with reasons such as the ones you've given.

I don't expect to be gaslighted by MNHQ of all places.

So far, on Mumsnet, the overwhelming majority have been in favour of this campaign. In fact, NO ONE has said it would be a bad idea, or that they wouldn't support it.
But if YOU don't want to support it, then at least give us the real reason.

I get that it's contentious, and that it may incite anger in some anti women's rights groups. But someone needs to be the one to stand up and say -

NO. THIS IS NOT OK.

Because it's really, really not.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your post.

We receive reports and mails surrounding this issue that are not always posted on site, and we can see from those that, while the responses on the threads may be unanimous, the feelings of those who are reading and not posting are not.

By all means, continue to discuss the issues here and take action if you see fit, but as it stands at the moment, Mumsnet will not be starting a campaign.

We do take all of this seriously, and are continuing discussions on the subject at MNHQ.

TheWomanInTheWall · 26/01/2016 09:32

MN is a business, not an action group or political party or public service . It is not obliged to adopt any given campaign or promote any given topic.

The "clear majority" response makes no sense but it's still up to them what they do.0

TheWomanInTheWall · 26/01/2016 09:32

X post!

I agree with previous posters but I also have a question.
Where do FTM transsexuals come into this?
Surely by taking testoreone they would also be at an advantage in women's catergories if that is where they are to compete? I presume under these new rules they will compete against biological males and thus be at the disadvantage?

lunar1 · 26/01/2016 09:34

You might get messages from other places but your members, the reason you have sponsorship are pretty unanimous. Just be honest, it's to politically difficult for you to support.

TheWomanInTheWall · 26/01/2016 09:37

Ftm can compete as men straightaway. No hormonal tests.

Because elite females won't beat elite males, so no test needed.

Yes, we can and we do. We haven't hidden this one or the other threads on the same issue. We would only hide from trending (never from active) if we had complaints about a very sweary/nasty title or on the odd occasion when a thread is really kicking off in a bad way, while we look into it. It would remain in active the whole time.

Thanks for the clarification Rebecca.

So there are just other, faster-moving threads, I suppose.

There is a very good website on the other trans threads who are probably worth contacting. I'll try to dig out the details

MimsyPimsy · 26/01/2016 09:47

Yeah, that'd be all those other threads with more than 250 posts in four hours then.
