Can we have a topic where name changing is not allowed?

Lots of people feel the 'atmosphere' has been somewhat lost, due to MN becoming so big and so many people name changing for dubious reasons.

So how about a new topic where name changing is not allowed?

So to post in that section, you choose a different name (much like in Mumsnet local). But you have to stick to that name only.

That way, in that section at least, there would be less arses/goady fuckers/Billy bullshitters and drama llamas, hiding behind name changes.

People will become 'regulars' again (in that section at least) and when you go there to chat, you'll at least 'recognise' other people.

OK I'm sure there are 1 million reasons why this is a stupid idea/impossible to set up, but can anyone think of them? Grin

Well because on going threads work well with a smaller group of people and broadly around a topic.

Anyone could join so it's not only for regulars - unless people really think posting for more than three months makes you a regular. And you are free to name change elsewhere on the site . It would be just one section where the same names would be used.
I want to go to a section with many different threads filled with consistent, eventually recognisable names because, with being recognisable comes a certain amount of responsibility for how you are perceived and received. I don't want one long running thread where you have to try and keep up with what people are talking about.

To be honest, anyone who would regard that as excluding them would have to be an insufferable whiner. At some point it would be nice if mnhq stopped making every single decision about the petty gripes of the relentlessly fucking miserable.

Anarchy99 · 30/12/2015 05:28

It makes sense but the reason I suggested an ongoing thread is that I imagine a new section like this is going to be populated by a relatively small section of MN as presumably all subjects would be covered within the section but a lot of people will still post, for example, in Chat rather than New General Section.

I mentioned perceived exclusion as thing like this are suggested and agreed with by so called 'royalty' (hate that phrase and totally agree it should be banned Grin) and I know how political these things can get.

I think the ability to be able to hide a poster, which comes up every now and again, would do wonders for the general feel of some threads as well. Seeing certain names on a thread can change the tone of someone's reply, for example.

Caprinihahahaha · 30/12/2015 06:34

Sure.
But I don't want a thread. I want a topic.
I've been on long running threads and they are great but that's not what I want. I want a section where there can be several threads running about different things.
A consistent theme on this and the thread that prompted it is the incredible regularity of threads where posters want to avoid the huge level of name changing trolls which rather suggests it wouldn't just be a small number of people using it.
What's the problem with trying it rather than not just in case it's not popular?

The question of exclusion was raised a couple of times so I was dealing with the general point rather than arguing with you.
I totally agree does indeed become political and people will complain.
My point remains though - so what? It's not going to exclude anyone who wishes to use it so the determination of the endlessly aggrieved shouldn't be paramount.

GreenRug · 30/12/2015 06:37

Great idea, I'm in!

Anarchy99 · 30/12/2015 06:40

Fair enough and I get what you are saying.

I think I may have just read too many 'it's not like the old days' threads by long standing, also endlessly aggrieved, posters Grin

And my other suggestions were just other ways to weed out the arsehole contingent, those who don't even bother name changing but you see their name and your heart sinks!

Caprinihahahaha · 30/12/2015 06:48

All the more reason to let the long standing endlessly aggrieved go somewhere else then.
Win win, surely?

That's the bit I don't really get to be honest. If people see a group of posters as irritating and they propose something which will allow them to have slightly different rules, applying only to them in a different corner of the site in order to be happier, why complain?

If people want to name change they can. Why would anyone want to enforce anonymity on a group of people who like the idea of recognising other posters and being recognised?

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 30/12/2015 07:11

...which rather suggests it wouldn't just be a small number of people using it.

Well, of course it won't be a small number because anyone and everyone can use it. Most might not give two hoots about whether it's a special corner or not and just be interested in some threads there.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 30/12/2015 07:15

anyone who would regard that as excluding them would have to be an insufferable whiner.

Or someone who, for personal reasons, needs to change their name regularly.

At some point it would be nice if mnhq stopped making every single decision about the petty gripes of the relentlessly fucking miserable.

But isn't that what this decision would be about...? Wink

I've been over to the sex topic < there should really be an emoticon for agog>

Dipping your chips in man gravy is the least of it over there, I shan't be returning

BearPursuedByAnExit · 30/12/2015 08:13

I don't like really long running threads as I find it hard to keep up.

Catzpyjamas · 30/12/2015 08:28

On some long running threads that were originally started as All Welcome there is such an established ongoing conversation that I would never join in. It would feel like interrupting.
Also there are some posters that I choose not to engage with and I avoid threads they are on. I'd prefer a topic where nothing becomes too exclusive as there is more than one thread to participate in iyswim.

exLtEveDallas · 30/12/2015 08:45

If we are going backwards does that mean I become LtEve again rather than an ExLt? I don't think I'm up for re-enlisting, I gave all my Gucci Army kit back to the Quartermaster...

(Interesting fact of the day: I'm sitting next to my mothers new heated towel rail posting this as the loo is 1) the only warm room in this bloody freezing house and 2) the only place I can get a 3G signal)

LumelaMme · 30/12/2015 08:48

Fat and scrapings from the fryer (or frying pan / roasting tin) thickend with flour to make a roux then diluted with potato / vegetable water is the only way to make gravy.
I add Oxo. Does that rule me out of the topic?

I'm on a fairly long-running thread(s); new members pop up regularly.

magimedi · 30/12/2015 08:51

All meat must be garnished with watercress. Tis the roolz Grin

I would just love more silly, chatty threads like this one where I recognise people & also get to 'know' others.

Sparkling - I can't see your picture either.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/12/2015 09:24

Eve, are you in a remote part of the world?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/12/2015 09:26

I'm in bed, dh is making tea, it's blowing a gale outside and the ds's are all still asleep.

What to go today?

exLtEveDallas · 30/12/2015 09:41

No, not at all. I'm in bloody Gloucester at the moment. But I've never been able to get a signal here.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/12/2015 09:44

🙂 Gloucester, ok.

Queenbean · 30/12/2015 09:50

StillClassy I'm in exactly the same position. Number one on my list to do today is sharpen my colouring pencils that dp got for me to go alongside a colouring book. I'm very grown up you know. Other than that, research how to freeze angel delight and nothing else on my list to do today.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/12/2015 09:56

Might go to the shop and get some watercress to make soup ready for some healthy eating in the New YeAr

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/12/2015 09:58

Queen I quite fancy the sound of colouring books for adults, might get one of those too😊

Queenbean · 30/12/2015 10:02

It's fab, I'd highly recommend Smile
