Can we have a topic where name changing is not allowed?

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2015 15:21

Lots of people feel the 'atmosphere' has been somewhat lost, due to MN becoming so big and so many people name changing for dubious reasons.

So how about a new topic where name changing is not allowed?

So to post in that section, you choose a different name (much like in Mumsnet local). But you have to stick to that name only.

That way, in that section at least, there would be less arses/goady fuckers/Billy bullshitters and drama llamas, hiding behind name changes.

People will become 'regulars' again (in that section at least) and when you go there to chat, you'll at least 'recognise' other people.

OK I'm sure there are 1 million reasons why this is a stupid idea/impossible to set up, but can anyone think of them? Grin

I think this is an excellent idea. Does this mean I can go back to ye olde MN name?

magimedi · 30/12/2015 10:08

Maryz - I think your idea about Chat is great. Might get people posting more in the myriad of other topics as well.

workshyfop · 30/12/2015 10:10

Yes please I would like a no NC chat topic

Watercress
Colouring book
Pencils
Spinach

magimedi · 30/12/2015 10:35

Keeping soap for a while before using is good - makes it last longer!

Why spinach, StillStaying?

WorraLiberty · 30/12/2015 10:40

Interesting thoughts Anarchy99, thanks for contributing.

I agree with Caprinihahaha in that I don't really like long running threads, as I feel like I'm interrupting.

Even if the thread has no particular subject, if you leave the thread when one subject is being discussed, by the time you return it's often moved on to another. I'd feel rude then replying to someone I'd been talking to about something else the night before IYSWIM?

Also (to agree again with Caprinihahaha ) a certain degree of responsibility does come with not name changing. I think less people are likely to act twattish if there's no chance of NC-ing and they're more likely to apologise if they do and just move on.

A bit more like RL really.

magi, spinach and watercress soup to get me back to my fighting weight in the NY😊only half joking there.

I've been off my feet for two weeks yet eaten for England, I need some greens, I'll dust off the Nutribullet.

WorraLiberty · 30/12/2015 10:47

Oh and WRT the 'royalty' accusations.

A new topic should knock that crap on the head. Right now when someone moans about royalty, what they normally mean is that non name changers are more easily recognised...often leading to people chatting/saying hello to them or just 'knowing' more about them.

That seems to upset some people who feel they have to name change for personal reasons.

A separate topic would give them the best of both worlds, so the royalty moaners would be able to do both - stay anonymous on the rest of the site, but build a 'profile' in the new topic.

Win win.

The "royalty" tag is attached to people who other posters perceive as untouchable insofar as you a re not allowed to disagree with them. That wouldn't change.

Sparklingbrook · 30/12/2015 10:52

Morning. Smile Can you see this?

Can we have a topic where name changing is not allowed?
Sparklingbrook · 30/12/2015 10:53

Hurrah! I am not Royalty in that case because I keep getting told how terribly wrong I am all over the place. Grin

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 30/12/2015 10:56

Also, wrt Royalty, as the new topic got older, you would end you with the same "problem" with newbies and long term posters.

(And Sparking, you're wrong Wink)

TiggyD · 30/12/2015 10:57

I don't like loads of name changing. You find out who to hate only for them to disappear and reinvent themselves. Not sure a no name change area would work.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 30/12/2015 10:59

I have no axe to grind either way - I only name change for festive/special occasions and my original name is always still in there somewhere.

I did once spend a year as another name for personal reasons.

SconeInSixtySeconds · 30/12/2015 10:59

OMG it's the Honey Puff monster after a short back and sides

Sparklingbrook · 30/12/2015 11:03

I always am SD. Grin

True. If people really think they're 'not allowed' to disagree with people then there's no telling them otherwise I suppose.

There'll still be rows and fall-outs in the new section, but at least people will know who to avoid.

Keeping _Chat as no-nc sounds like a great idea.

I'm still concerned about how you decide what your _Chat name is. If you bust that nn somewhere else then it might effectively exclude you from the ongoing candour. I'm just not sure

The main royalty objection usually stems from less-regulars feeling as though they're being ignored by others who all know each other getting on with another conversation. The fact that it is a perception matters because at some point you realise that the price of inclusion is in fact participation.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/12/2015 11:08

I hardly ever name change anyway, just CBA so if something is particularly sensitive I just tend not to post

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/12/2015 11:11

Incidentally I made the most kick ass gravy on Christmas Day (humble). I made stock out of the giblets & everything. It tasted more turkey than the turkey itself!

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/12/2015 11:24

I think the MN Royalty accusations should be met head-on by naming the new topic The Royal Enclosure Grin

SeekretSquirrels · 30/12/2015 11:26

You all stay up sooo late!
I had a veggie guest for Christmas dinner so I made veggie gravy for everyone and was secretly quite relieved to put giblets straight in bin.

I don't like long running threads unless it's a particular long term topic (like education ones). They tend to be a small group and you do get to know people but they are rambling fun. I tend to use a particular name for those threads.

I vote for a topic rather than a thread. It needs tech to make so we don't accidentally sock puppet. It can't be too hard to have a watsit that flags up your proper name for the topic.

EduCated · 30/12/2015 11:28

Bore Xmas Grin

Sparklingbrook · 30/12/2015 11:29

The Topic will need a name.
