The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

I think Clancy's posts are a prime reason why they should be turned back off. I am using a mobile advice, yet most of her emojis appear as black crossed out squares to me - so the emojis don't even work consistently.

SwedishEdith · 08/12/2015 23:40

Actually, I've gone off them. It delays a thread loading as it has to change the original emoji to a different one.

ClancyMoped · 08/12/2015 23:46

I like images as I think they can add to a conversation. I'm not sure emoji add anything constructive.

I really don't like the emojis and don't think they add anything to the site.

There is a skill in writing about an emotion that can't be replaced by a picture. I think it removes us further from true communication.

There's too much bloody hubby, hunning lolz as it is without 💅💖👍

rainbowstardrops · 09/12/2015 06:22

I like them but can see why others don't. Haven't rtft but how about a compromise - get rid of being able to use all emojis but add to the MN ones? We need a few more at least imo. Smile

RomComPhooey · 09/12/2015 07:12

Clancy's vipers are showing up on my iPhone, but they are so tiny and I'm turning into such an old gimmer, they look like tiny green poos. In fact, that's one of my main objections. Most of the imported emojis are so small as to be undecipherable - and are consequently adding nothing but irritation to the MN experience for me. On a scale of meh to fuck right off, they are right up there with the unwelcome video adverts that were driving everyone nuts a week or two ago.

MaisieDotes · 09/12/2015 07:25

I'm a bit bored of them now.

Has anyone considered this one 👹 ?

Will posting 👹 on a thread be the same as troll-hunting? Or will it be the same as Biscuit because it's only an emoji?

Some don't show for me, but most are too small old eyes, so I'm tending to ignore them or posts which have an excessive amount of them.

And I think they mess too much with the 'clean' look of MN. So it's a NO from me.

Unless....they could be confined to Chat? Would that even be possible?

And we do need a viper! 🐍🐍🐍

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 09/12/2015 10:41

I would rather swap the emojis for more and better MN smilies. Because I MN from my laptop.

caker · 09/12/2015 11:11

They are annoying. They show up huge and make things hard to read on my phone. I don't really see the point.

Shakey15000 · 09/12/2015 15:16

I don't like them. As in, I'm ok with the tea/wine etc etc but anything else makes me feel that MN is heading down the NM highway.

MissDemelzaCarne · 09/12/2015 15:58

You'll then be limited to normal letters, numbers and standard punctuation in the posts. Plus the MN emoticons of course.

Yes, please! I'm voting for the above. Could 'standard punctuation' become compulsory? Wink

Pigeonpost · 09/12/2015 16:23

I like the original MN ones but can't see any others? I have the emoji keyboard on my iPhone but it doesn't appear when I am posting from the app (as I normally am). I especially like the ability to respond to a post just using Biscuit. Or Chocolate as now appears to be the case

Powaqa · 09/12/2015 16:25

It's a no from me too

It will be tickers, sparkly bits and text speak next

Mumsnet will end up as a poor mans version of Netmums

Kacie123 · 09/12/2015 17:11

Noooooo

hollyisalovelyname · 09/12/2015 17:21

I like them Smile

Lweji · 09/12/2015 17:25

I don't mind them. I don't think they will catch up anyway.

But it should be the case that either all users can use and see them or none.

reni2 · 09/12/2015 17:27

No from me. Too... netmums for me. Tickers will be next. I prefer words.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 09/12/2015 17:51

It's a No from me too. I'm a MN traditionalist, and it's getting like bloody FB on here at the mo.

Someone did a whole row of that crying-laughing one on a thread and it really bugged me for some reason.

Wilding · 09/12/2015 18:35

Another no over here - please get rid! Not a fan and they don't always show up properly to me anyway.

MamehaSan · 09/12/2015 19:30

They make the place look like Facebook. And that's not a good thing, btw...

StrumpersPlunkett · 09/12/2015 20:50

😮👁🎩no👁🐐
Oh I had no idea (well it is a goat but I don't have a deer emoji)

Lweji · 09/12/2015 20:54

Hardly anyone uses emojis among my FB friends.
Maybe we are all too old.
