Troll Hunting

IthoughtATMwasacashpoint · 03/10/2015 10:11

Another thread lost through thoughtless, unresearched, troll hunting.

Is it possible for MNHQ to start handing out bans for this?

It's not difficult to follow the rules, if in doubt report. Search the user name, then report if you still have doubts.

It's neither funny nor clever to drive upset and vulnerable people off their threads and away from the support and advice they sought by posting in the first place.

OP posts:

I agree. I want to read the thread as it stands, unless MN sees fit to remove it.

I just do not understand this idea that trolls "hurt" people to the extent that "troll hunters" feel entitled to employ themselves to moderate/scrutinise/check an OP's accuracy and truth.

We are all on the internet. I could have two heads and 15 fingers, but one accepts that as part of talking to strangers on a forum.

If you invest beyond that you are naive and gullible and unrealistic about the pure number of people in the world and visitors to the site.

You should be answering the topics on "talk" that you want to answer. The ones that make you want to say something, without thinking about whether it is real or not. In purely theoretical terms, it is always great to explore topics and dilemmas, whether they are true (real) or not (potential.) it helps you understand where you stand on contentious issues.

There is no obligation to reply to someone. There is no obligation to become someone's personal online counsellor, to send money, or to meet in RL.

I would happily invest days in a troll thread if it helped developed my emotional IQ or taught me something.

And that is because I understand that I am on the internet browsing a website and that I am not employed to moderate mumsnet (somehing which I thinks a lot of people feel is their purpose.)

I posted recently about the after effects of when my DDs Dad left her in the house alone at 5 weeks old and only received a Caution for Neglect and the effects now, 2.5 years later. I got called a Troll as PP didn't believe he would only get a Caution and MNHQ deleted my thread!!! I don't think I stopped crying for rest of the day. I was so upset because it sadly, was 100% genuine and I was in dire need of support at the time

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 13:52

Sad Just saw Maryz name and thought she was back. But no it's a thread from 2015. Sad

ladyduchess · 28/05/2017 14:19

Didn't realise this thread was from 2015 until I saw Sparklingbrook's post..

Funny, two years on and the whole troll-hunting issue still stands.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/05/2017 14:20

I think people who reanimate 18 month old ZOMBIE threads should be banned too Confused

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 14:22

There's a weekly or possibly daily thread thread about how Trollhunting is way worse than trolling. No need to reanimate zombie ones.

lynmilne65 · 28/05/2017 14:22

Sorry, could someone explain exactly what a troll is ? Am not very savvy yet Confused

MaisyPops · 28/05/2017 14:22

Surely its simple. If you think the poster I'd a hairy handed troll then report it and leave the thread.

Or assume genuine, reply and then report.

I don't see what anyone possibly gains by troll hunting.

MaisyPops · 28/05/2017 14:23

Aww what! This is a zombie thread.

Why do that. Who needs zombie threads bringing back.

lynmilne65 · 28/05/2017 14:24

But it's more fun than gransnet on here 😁

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/05/2017 14:25

@user93852244 Why reanimate yet another zombie thread? I'm sure you could have posted your sparkling insight on the issue on a new thread?

daisychain01 · 28/05/2017 16:04

Livia it may be just me but it always seems to be user1234567 type IDs who reactivate Zombie posts. Either they are new naive posters or making mischief. Or a combo of both!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/05/2017 16:20

That's what I thought - could be the same one actually Hmm

Jux · 01/06/2017 12:15

Troll hunting on a thread should carry a temporary ban.

Whether a thread is true or not is anyone's guess, but lots of people who lurk are helped by reading them, as I know from personal experience. Practically every thread I read here has taught me something, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had little glimmers ofmlight appear in my head from reading MN threads.

Just deal with the troll hunters quickly as the evidence is there in front of us. Then investigate the purported troll.

Hdgshsksk · 03/06/2017 00:57

Troll hunting on a thread should carry a temporary ban

Trust me, it does Blush.

You get a polite warning letter, which you forget about after a month or so and then when you troll hunt again, even if it's subtle you get a weeks ban.

Apparently 🙄Blush

Hdgshsksk · 03/06/2017 00:59

Aghhhhhh, it's a ruddy zombie thread. Why oh why Wong MNHQ do something about them.......

It's so annoying. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

lynmilne65 · 08/10/2017 08:05

I STILL KNOW NOT WHAT A TROLL IS SHE PLEADED 🤔

Anechdoche
I read that after searching. I don't think it helps much.
Wikipedia itself says the erm is very subjective.
I haven't found where MN states their view.

May be a semi-zombie thread - but still as germane now as in 2015

genuineidiot · 09/10/2017 17:02

Sorry I know this is a 2015er but I agree. If you think it's a trolling thread report it as such - no need to fill the thread with TROLL, TROLL, TROLL!!!

@Justdontgetitatall a similar thing happened to me one time, horrible.
