Please do start another thread about the hide poster option, but avoid making it personal.

I would like to be able to hide goady / drum-banging / just plain boring posters. I would not at all mind being hidden by everyone else.

Anyone else have comments they've not made yet on this one?

Thanks Eve - do I just Google for it or is it a secret? And can I get it for Chrome on Android?

exLtEveDallasNoBollocks · 15/06/2015 18:22

You have to be on a PC running firefox MrsH, it isn't supported otherwise. I downloaded Ff and then the MN greesemonkey script, I'll give you the link if you want

PeaceOfWildThings · 15/06/2015 18:23

I love MrsHathaway's suggestion of the auto stopping of using more than one name on any given thread.

MrsHathaway · 15/06/2015 18:25

Oh ok - tbh given my experiences with Firefox and the fact I mostly MN from my phone I doubt it's worth my while but thanks for the offer Cake Gin

YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 18:32

"I love MrsHathaway's suggestion of the auto stopping of using more than one name on any given thread."

But some threads are very long running eg antenatal clubs, posts about a 10 week TV series etc - it would be a pain to change back if you'd done an all out change or a seasonal change.

I disagree with hide poster. And I suspect it would be a tech nightmare.

Yonic - on mobile site and desktop version there's a box above the text box for the username. You can use it to nc on the fly but it autocompletes with the name you're currently logged in with. It could easily autocomplete with the name you're using on this thread.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 15/06/2015 18:42

Jeez anyone would think I was asking you to redesign the thread personally soup
Ffs people have been asking for this for ages surely these who don't want it don't use it but like me and the sex board.
Oh and why oh why does there always have to be a dig at "royalty"?

YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 18:44

" It could easily autocomplete with the name you're using on this thread."

Hmm. That's a hell of a lot of dynamic lookups. I think it'd slow the site!

YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 18:47

And I'm not sure that each possible name change is coded in a way to allow the search.

YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 18:48

Which is why it's not easy for MNHQ to do a name amnesty.

Sparklingbrook · 15/06/2015 18:50

If Hide Poster was available i would use it and I wouldn't have a problem if people hid me, in fact there are some I hope would hide me. Smile

MrsHathaway · 15/06/2015 18:53

I am not as techy as you. I imagined a layer where my post actually says something like "userid 12345 postingas MrsHathaway". When userid 12345 posts on the thread again the system should default to MrsHathaway.

Do you mean the system would be having to search the thread for userid 12345 and return the identical postingas, rather than just inserting the currently logged in username?

DeidreChambersWhatACoincidence · 15/06/2015 18:57

I wouldnt use it. MN already delete anything offensive. Knowing you can report a post is enough for me. Other than that I like the free expression and freedom on MN that the site allows even if I don't always agree. Also, the name change facility would mean it wouldn't really work.

One thing I like about MN is that I can totally disagree or dislike what someone says on one thread but completely agree or be amused by them a few days later. I like that Smile

I don’t like the idea. It's a bit primary school playground. I know the posters who piss me off and I just don't read their posts.

Moln · 15/06/2015 19:06

I've used a site were there was a hide poster option.

Have to say it didn't really work, because when the hidden poster wrote something in a thread instead of their post you would see "this post is by username, who is on you hid list - click here to read" (I paraphrase as I can't really recall the exact words). Not reading it made the thread disjointed, especially if they had posted a lot.

Also if you can't stand a poster for whatever reason and you want to be able to use a function to hide their post due to the fact you get drawn in due to curiosity killing the cat situation then it's not going to work as when you see they have posted but cant read what they have posted then the chances are you're going to unhide every post!!

Also, on this site you could still see threads started by a hidden poster (big flaw that!) just could read the OP!

Moln · 15/06/2015 19:11

*couldn't read the OP

alteredimages · 15/06/2015 19:27

I wouldn't like this at all because I think we would end up with unreadable threads where parallel discussions were taking place because most posters couldn't see the whole thread.

I can see why the idea is attractive, there are some really provocative posts out there that stay just this side of the rules, but I think MN is great because it is open and so lightly moderated and the wide range of people and views is where its strength lies.

YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 19:29

Yes I think so MrsH. I think there's one table with user12345's IDs (Rod, Jane and Freddie or whatever) and that's what populates the box. By default, user12345 maps to the ID they are currently using and there's only ever one primary ID.

To scan the thread for the presence of user12345 dynamically would I think be quite slow,

CoogerAndDark · 15/06/2015 19:30

Definitely if 'I've hidden X' was banned and dealt with. I've reservations that MNHQ would deal with it, but in theory, yes, why not.

MrsHathaway · 15/06/2015 19:35

Ok thanks.

Not slower than scanning for hidden posters though surely!

TheFairyCaravan · 15/06/2015 19:43

I think alteredimages has hit the nail on the head as to why it wouldn't work imo.

SouthWestmom · 15/06/2015 20:25

No
I can imagine a thread where loads of PMs go round suggesting someone is hidden
Someone isolated might realise they've been hidden and be really distraught
I think we need some people to toughen up a bit and accept that a different opinion isn't goading

Modestine · 15/06/2015 20:39

a different opinion isn't goading Quite
