Please do start another thread about the hide poster option, but avoid making it personal.

I would like to be able to hide goady / drum-banging / just plain boring posters. I would not at all mind being hidden by everyone else.

Anyone else have comments they've not made yet on this one?

The check box is greyed out for me. I just get a message saying I can only install it if it's on the Chrome store....

cozietoesie · 17/06/2015 21:31

So even there, you can see that the blocked poster has actually posted?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 17/06/2015 21:59

I thought car mechanics are called greasemonkeys

moresnow · 17/06/2015 23:13

cozie, that's correct. The favourite button would highlight all Beryl's posts a fetching shade of yellow.

Greasemonkey is a plugin for your browser that lets you run javascript scripts that can alter the appearance of webpages. You can get ones for FB to hide adverts and suggestions and for various other sites.

I appear to have no willpower. I've got the script running but keep unhiding people to find out if they're any less annoying they're not

Where is the line between expressing an opinion which is not mainstream on MN, and pushing an agenda?

Expressing a minority opinion might be a once off or an opinion expressed a few times. Pushing an agenda is appearing again and again on certain topics or on AIBU or Chat to repeat posts you have posted umpteen times before, expressing your disapproval of, for instance, vaccination, or your disapproval of intervention in childbirth - horror at caesareans, horror at epidurals or episiotomy. The number of posts and the general theme of someone's posts can easily be searched.

The kind of opinions I have in mind are not only 'not mainstream on MN', they fly in the face of current medical wisdom and are actually capable of doing great harm or causing great distress if taken seriously.

I do think guidelines could be tweaked by MN to include a caution about expressing 'medical opinions' or opinions on medical matters that go against established medical wisdom. I also think MN should take sheer volume and repeated posting of dire warnings about vaccination, for instance, into account if someone reports a poster. It shouldn't be a case of getting away with anything as long as you don't frighten the horses.

Don't overthink it - there are people I'd like to hide because they piss me off - not bothered about agendas etc. and I bet I'm not alone.

I want to hide people I don't want to see - no matter what the reason!!

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 19/06/2015 14:56

Sorted!! Had to install Tampermokey to get it working - but it works a treat now!

BerylStreep · 19/06/2015 15:38

So, MNHQ now that there has been a debate about this, what do you think? Would it be worth giving it a trial?

I actually think if it prevents / diminishes bun fights, then it would make MN a nicer place to be, which I would have thought would make commercial sense.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/06/2015 15:42

I think there should be a trialSmile

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/06/2015 18:25

there you go, it's a nicer place alreadyWink

Nope.

Would it work on an iPad? (The grease monkey thing). I'm not technical, can you tell Smile but there are one or two I'd love to erase from view.

LineRunner · 21/06/2015 18:36

I erased myself two days ago.

I wonder if it may be necessary, I recently saw a legitimate thread with posts from people suggesting poster was a troll, it seems there is an element of competitive troll hunting going on.
On another thread the Op, who was obviously in a dire situation said they were unsure whether to post in case they were called a troll.
Please don't call me a troll, she said in her Op, I couldn't cope. It was very sad as she was desperately in need of support.
Mumsnet has always had some anger issues particularly around the full moon and AIBU but in the last week I've seen more unpleasantness than you used to see in a month.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 07/07/2015 10:57

Well, a couple of weeks on & I've got a couple of posters hidden.

No cries of bullying, they don't seem to have noticed my lack of interest in their views & it certainly hasn't affected my viewing pleasure!

Most MN threads are fairly disjointed anyway, with people typing at different speeds & answering things 3 pages back etc. so haven't noticed any "lack of flow" in the conversations...

The only grip I have with the work around is that you can still see they've posted, just not what they've said - personally I'd rather not see them at all once I've hidden them.
