RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2014 14:18

Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:13

@mypussyiscalledCaramel

Crabb You have to go onto the desk top site. Go into customise and click yes, then save.

Thank you!

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:15

@mypussyiscalledCaramel

Is there a refresh button somewhere that I'm missing? At the moment I have to go to TIO then come back to the thread

I think these are usually on browsers, not within the websites themselves? eg on iOS it's in the top right of the browser nav bar.

AmyMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:24

@MsMarvel

I can see the 'm' on the active threads list, but if you actually just go into the chat topic, there isn't any indication about which threads are stickied. Unless it's just me and everyone else can see it?

Hi ms, thanks for flagging that, we'll sort that out for you.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:24

@MamaMary

Has it been explained why this change was made?

The old mobile site was MILES better. Why change to one that's crap? The posts are two big and spaced out. It's awkward and time-consuming to navigate. There's no button to go to 'top'. When I click on Threads I'm Watching it takes for ever to come up, and then never at the last post I read (as it used to). The ads are huge and take up so much of the screen.

I'm an HTC Android phone, use Google/Chrome.

I'm writing this from my PC as I can't bear it on my mobile now and won't be using it. It's probably a good thing as I'll be on MN far less now.

We're really sorry you don't like it.

Obviously (well, we hope it's obvious) it was never our intention to take away something good and replace it with something crap.

Websites need to update, add some bits of functionality, re-jig menus and buttons and so on - it's how the web works. We've based the new mobile site on tests and analytics that gave us info about which functions were used most, which were under-used etc - and have tried to 'foreground' heavily-used ones.

Obviously we haven't got it completely right, but overall we're really hoping that when users have got used to the new appearance - and we've added some new functions and changed those that are really annoying people - you'll mostly find it's a cleaner, slicker, better experience.

Tech are working on TIO right now and we really hope to have a fix for this some time today.

Ads are a necessity we're afraid: Mumsnet wouldn't exist without them. But we're going to test different ad positions and see what works best.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:32

@SoonToBeSix

Rowan , thanks for answering my question. I do understand there needs to be adverts , if they didn't move it wouldn't be so bad , also it take up a lot of space and creates a letter box affect, at least on an iphone screen.

When you say 'move', can you give a bit more detail (with device/browser/OS)?

My banner ad at the top is completely static (iPhone, Safari). Do you mean that yours isn't?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:33

@WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes

I know I can bookmark them BTW, but that's fiddly and an extra step that you didn't have to do before.

tech are working on fixing Threads I'm On right now

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:33

@KateBeckett

So when is your UX person coming back from holiday? Just wondering how long we are realistically going to have to deal with the evil glarey white?

We're going to get everyone together and have a proper look on Monday, fingers crossed

AmyMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:34

@WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes

I've been trying it on and off over the last few days, my biggest gripe is that on TIO you can't see the first few words of the last few posts like before and you can't go to the last post, it always takes you to the beginning. Unless I'm doing something wrong. It's a showstopper for me, I won't be using it unless that changes.

Hi WhoKnows, we're working on TIO at the mo, so hopefully it will be fixed soon.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:35

@TheOneWiththeNicestSmile

Rowan pls see my comment below

The most annoying thing currently is that when my phone turns from portrait to landscape, it jumps up thread. This is fine and has always happened BUT when I turn it back to portrait, instead of adjusting back to the post I was upto (which it used to do!!!) it now jumps to a random place up thread and I have to scroll to find it.

The white is still not broken up enough to make it easy for my dyslexic brain to read - it is better than the stark white which had me unable to read at all, but still a bit of an effort and an eyestrain.

I agree aswell about the line and paragraph spacing - it looks double spaced! It's a forum not a thesis

and for you all, this must be a shitter to sort out...
Thanks KateBeckett.

Not sure this is an issue for anyone else (anyone?) - it may be because you're using a fairly old iPhone model and iOS. Sorry to be 'computer says no' about it, but realistically we need to prioritise the device/OS/browser combos that most people use (which tend to be the more up to date versions).

Not just old phones - mine is iPhone 5s (iOS 7 1 2, safari) & drops to very bottom when I turn to landscape, then shoots up by about 1/3 when returned to portrait

OK thanks, will add to the glitch list.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:37

@mrssmith79

Heartening to see mnhq on the ball and keeping everyone informed in real time Smile

My gripe of the day is that the differentiation in colour between threads I've not opened and threads I've already read has stopped resulting in my reopening threads I've already seen. Will this be returning at any point?

Yup, this is on our list.

I'm going to hand you over to the lovely AmyMumsnet now for a bit

AmyMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:53

@LittleBearPad

I'm so Smile that bookmarking is working properly again.

Thanks for Tech.

Hurrah, we'll pass it on.

AmyMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:54

@PolterGoose

iPhone on Safari, latest iOS

Thanks for listening Gin

I'm getting used to the buttons and whatnot, but display style remains problematic and uncomfortable:

The scrolling 'into' the banner ad is a visual stress, if you look at my photos with text on white background you can see how it is much harder on the eyes than when it's the blue background of an MNHQer post. All together, the moving adverts, the flicker as you scroll and the contrast between white screen and colour of banner, they all hurt.

On another couple of forums I lurk on the ad's are between posts, it's annoying but at least you can scroll past them.

Hi Polter,

As Rowan has said upthread, we're going to have a play around with the ads to find out how best to lay them out on site, so we'll bear in mind your suggestions.

AmyMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:06

To everyone who has flagged the portrait to landscape issue, just to confirm we passed this on to tech, but we've had a play on our phones at HQ and when we turn them back to portrait we get taken back to the same place on the thread.

Can you please tell us which phone and browser you're using?

AmyMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:09

@MultipleMama

I've noticed that many people are double/triple etc are posting. Is this due to the double tap or because it takes too long/doesn't show it's posted? Wouldn't returning to once tap solve the problem. I don't understand why it was changed in the first place. Just curious...

Hi Multiple, we tend to get double or triple posts across the site fairly often. We haven't noticed any increase since the new mobile site, but we'll keep an eye out for any changes.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:37

@PinkSquash

You're coming in on Monday? On a Bank holiday? ShockGin for that

Erk. Sorry. Tuesday!

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:38

@Sirzy

I am sure it has been asked already but it's hard enough to navigate without trying to got through the whole thread but when I click on the threads from TIO it takes me to the first post, I want to come to the last post not what I had already read

tech are fixing Threads I'm On right now.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:44

@Coumarin

LittleBear I'm scrolling 'down' (I think...) no safari buttons. I think it's the ad that's the problem but I see this has already been mentioned 100's of times and may change.

Ha Grin Yes, we will probably test the ad in a few positions.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:57

To start a new thread:

Go into a topic, and select "Add thread" from the sub-menu (NB you must be logged in to see the sub-menu: it's under the downward-pointing chevron under the three main icons in the top right of the page)

Or go into a topic and select "Add thread" from the shortcuts bar at the bottom

Or you can go into a thread and select "Start new thread" from the sub-menu (NB you must be logged in to see the sub-menu: it's under the downward-pointing chevron under the three main icons in the top right of the page)

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 13:59

@Glastogirl

App does this and never lets me post!

Looks like you're on an iPhone GlastoGirl - is that right? Can you tell us which phone (iPhone 3/4/4s/5)?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 14:00

We'll tell Tech that power use is still an issue.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 14:01

@Glastogirl

It's an iPhone 5 :)

Thanks. Anyone else having trouble posting from an iPhone?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 14:18

To see all posts on one page

We don't have an on-page button for this at the moment although we'll keep an eye on how many of you would like it reinstated personally I used to use it quite a lot.

For now you need to do it via Customise (under the sub-menu. NB you must be logged in to see the sub-menu: it's under the downward-pointing chevron under the three main icons in the top right of the page)

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 14:21

@SoonToBeSix

Rowan sorry I wasn't clear. The actual banner is static. However some adverts like the Peugeot are like a silent video the images move.

Aha, thanks. Will check out what our policy is on ads that move.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 14:36

@MardyBra

Or maybe it's just user error.

Dunno Mardy, let's test it out...

Anyone else finding that they are hiding the shortcut bar but it keeps coming back?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 14:42

@ancientbuchanan

Mardy, if so happens to me too, see disobedient blue bar.

A/R,

If I do ask for TIO, I get put on the latest one, not the full menu.

This is a new problem, was fine yesterday.

Sorry Ancient, not quite sure what you mean here. Do like the idea of MN being a troublesome teenager though Grin

Re your elderly HTC: we're afraid we do need to prioritise fixing things so that they work on relatively up-to-date devices, OSs and browsers. So it may be that some older devices and browsers will be glitchy and we may not be able to do much about that, in the short/medium term at least. Sorry. Brew
