Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

Bookmark menu issue fixed - nice one tech! Wine

Yay! Yes Tech have just released what we hope is a fix. Fingers crossed... do you want to all have a go?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 10:46

@Needasilverlining

I haven't turned off the shortcut menu, that being one of two things I actually like about this abomination.

Plus it would give two extra lines at most. The problem is the font and spacing. The old site managed to pack in loads, could you not borrow back a bit of the styling?

We're going to try to fix actual bugs/broken things first, and address accessibility issues - then when that's done we'll see where we are on the aesthetics/spacing/appearance. (Timescale for this is likely to be over the longer term though!)

[APOLS FOR REPEATING MYSELF - just aware that if you're reading on a tiny screen you may not be seeing posts by MNHQ the first time around]

You could definitely afford to lose a smidge of the line spacing and a lot of the paragraph spacing without impacting useability too much.

We will look at this - we just want to fix the actually broken stuff first. (There is a layer of functionality we haven't actually released yet... which hopefully will be lovely and shiny and useful when we roll it out)

Maybe release it without the fanfare this time? Grin

I think my opening post on the first thread is the single thing I'd like to expunge from my ENTIRE LIFE

Nexus 4 / Nexus 7 Android 4.4.4 Chrome Beta 37.0.2062.94 Also Chrome 36.0.1985.135 (Although I suspect all platforms)

Thread titles/links don't change colour once clicked on.

Ta. We're compiling a rolling list so please keep 'em coming

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 10:54

@Needasilverlining

I did see it, thanks Rowan - think we x posted.

I need to stop for a while now, this is actually making me feel a bit motion sick. Sad

The other thing I liked was the Smile menu btw. The styling is horrendous from a reading pov - I'll live with the ads, the tio will be ok when fixed, the look is actually just like Tesco as pp said but I'm sure I'd get used to it... but I loathe the constant scrolling. You need to fit more text in - white space is fab on a full site but counter productive on a forum.

Thanks. Absolutely noted!

Re accessibilty, this page is OK for me because your posts in blue break up the glare and whiteness that lots of us have mentioned.

I don't want to speak for everyone but if the posts are broken up colour wise it is better than the expanse of white, and easier to read.

Maybe some of my fellow mnetters could suggest colour/s that would be helpful ? Just thinking of a chat I had yesterday with LEM re white not being the best for some dyslexic posters ?

Accessibility will be a top priority. Guides' honour.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:08

@ScarlettDarling

Hi Rowan ... I still don't have a 'customise ' button. Or the infamous ellipsis at the bottom corner of each post. Am feeling very left out! (Samsung galaxy ace by the way!)

Eeek.

Anyone else not getting the ellipses/three dots menu at the bottom of the post?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:09

@DoNotLookDown

My 'icons' are empty circles and square boxes, I have no idea what's what.

I also have no ... I can click on a post and the options appear, but unless you click on an option the box won't go. Clicking 'back' to try and get rid of it just takes you back a page.

I'm on a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, using Google Search. My phone doesn't support Chrome and I don't want to download loads of browsers, or update my phone ( as suggested on another thread).

It also gives me motion sickness, like watching a film on a hand held camera.

Is Google Search a browser? (Sorry if this is a stupid question!) What's your operating system - Android?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:15

@JellyStrawberries

Ok, I guess I'm the only person who cares about the social media buttons. I really, really want to hide them but maybe no one else is that bothered.

I haven't really encountered glitches, so perhaps that's why I'm free to obsess about the social media issue - I have an HTC...erm, something? The site seems to work fine on it anyway. I don't like the stark design but I can see I'd get used to it. If we could hide those fecking FB/Twitter buttons so I could feel less afraid of inadvertently sharing a thread, then I wouldn't mind it really.

(Sorry for the less than ringing endorsement, but a lacklustre shrug is better than furious rage I guess?)

Hahahahahaha

Social media sharing buttons are on the 'things to discuss when everything is working properly' list.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:25

@DoNotLookDown

Android 2.3.6 I'm not ever so technical, but I think Google search is a browser, it just doesn't have the full Chrome capabilities.

It seems like a lot of the functions aren't supported on my device. What I assume is the Mindset logo appears as a blue square with a ? In it.

Also when I click 'post' nothing happens, so I clicked it again. It was only when I exited the site and came back I saw I'd posted! twice

OK thanks. Tech are going to try to look at compatibility issues (across different devices, browers and OSs) today.

We should say though that if you're using a really old browser version, a really unusual browser, an old or unusual operating system etc, the horrible truth is that it may take us a while to sort your individual issue.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:27

@livelablove

Ah those dots just above posting box are links to social media, it does work but just appears as a dot on my screen. The ellipses below each post are still not working for me. Nokia lumia 900a,windows, internet explorer.

Thanks. Tech are going to look at compatibility issues today, hopefully, so I'll add this to their list!

They're also working (right now) on making Threads I'm On more functional/useful.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:41

@Germgirl

Think back to yesterday afternoon when the new site launched. A lot has been fixed since then so I have every confidence that the other issues will be sorted too. Speaking Has the battery-eating been sorted? I tend to use the app when I'm not at home but if the battery is not going to be depleted in minutes when I'm out & about I'll start to use the mobile site. Speaking of issues, I'm still having trouble with pics that people have posted. If I click on them they appear in a little box of their own with the background greyed out. But they're no bigger than they were in the post. If I click on them To enlarge they nestle themselves firmly in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, still not much bigger than before. I then can't access the X to close the box because it's fallen off the edge if the screen. Is this being addressed? I'm on iPhone 5c iOS 7.1.2 Safari

Thanks.

Does this describe, roughly, the same picture issues that other posters are having?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:44

@ScarlettDarling

Hi Rowan ... I still don't have a 'customise ' button. Or the infamous ellipsis at the bottom corner of each post. Am feeling very left out! (Samsung galaxy ace by the way!)

There does seem to be a compatibility issue with some Galaxy Aces and some Windows/Nokia combos. Will flag these to Tech.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:45

@KnackeredMuchly

Oh no. I stamped my feet A LOT yesterday...

And it's better. Much better. I'm seriously impressed at the impovements and how quickly they've been done.

Bugger, now you are making me reasonable! Blush

Bravo MNHQ and Tech Support

Aw fanks. Sorry for making you all go through it in the first place!

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:46

@SoonToBeSix

Can we please please pleas get rid of the top adverts!!! The moving Peugeot one is really really bad.

We're testing the ads in this position for a bit, and then we will test them in a different position, and we'll try to work out what works best. There will always be ads though - there's really no way around that.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:54

@regularbutpanickingabit

Please can you look in to the repeated need to log in even when you have ticked re box that means you shouldn't have to?? Has been a problem since the mass password reset and despite posting meekly about it then (several times) and here, it just seems to be ignored. So frustrating and it screws up everything very time iOS 7, iPhone 5s

We will look at this - the problem is it seems to be really patchy and only happens to some people. As far as I know we still haven't worked out what the common factor is. This may need a different thread (or a revival of the previous thread we had about this)

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:56

@SwedishEdith

Oh, and where's the option to get rid of the social media buttons (I know there isn't one so phrasing it in a deliberately provocative manner)? I can see about 2 posts per screen. Another non-improvement

We will look at the social media sharing options, but we want to fix actually broken stuff first.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 11:57

@MultipleMama

Samsung S3 Mini Latest Android for my phone. Latest Chrome.

When I press the "hide this thread" it knocks off the drop down, when I go back on the drop down the above option is not available so I assumed it worked, yet when I go on my TIO, the thread is still there.

Also, all the threads I have hidden on the desktop version on my laptop (which are still hidden, weirdly) are all appearing on the mobile version.

And the same complaint as most; need recent posts on TIO and a thicker line to separate posts and a block for username, date, time, etc to go in to break up the awful white.

I think many prefer the old version because the blue background for buttons etc broke up, so it didn't hurt the eyes as much. Also, how about an off-white/blueish white, instead of the white which is still a little glarey on my phone.

tech are working on TIO right now.

Is bookmarking still working for people other than bearfrills?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:00

@crabb

Can someone tell me where the bookmark option is? I can't see it. iPhone 4s, ios 7.1.

Hit the ellipses/three dots menu on the bottom right of the post; bookmark is one of those options

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:01

@SoonToBeSix

Also and I know I have mentioned this before but the white is still here I thought it was meant to be a priority . If MNHQ could just confirm it will be changed even if it takes time to do it . I can relax Grin

Accessibility is definitely a priority. We need our UX expert to take a look and unfortunately she's on holiday, but when she's back we will take a thorough look. Promise.

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:05

@crabb

It's not on my ellipse menu Sad

Hmm. What device, browser and operating system are you using?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:06

@mypussyiscalledCaramel

My bookmarking still works on scroll excell tablet using uc browser.

Thanks. Really sorry bearfrills but it looks like this one might be just you?

RowanMumsnet · 22/08/2014 12:13

@KateBeckett

iPhone 3 iOS 6.1.6 Safari

The most annoying thing currently is that when my phone turns from portrait to landscape, it jumps up thread. This is fine and has always happened BUT when I turn it back to portrait, instead of adjusting back to the post I was upto (which it used to do!!!) it now jumps to a random place up thread and I have to scroll to find it.

The white is still not broken up enough to make it easy for my dyslexic brain to read - it is better than the stark white which had me unable to read at all, but still a bit of an effort and an eyestrain.

I agree aswell about the line and paragraph spacing - it looks double spaced! It's a forum not a thesis Wink

Wine and Cake for you all, this must be a shitter to sort out...

Thanks KateBeckett.

Not sure this is an issue for anyone else (anyone?) - it may be because you're using a fairly old iPhone model and iOS. Sorry to be 'computer says no' about it, but realistically we need to prioritise the device/OS/browser combos that most people use (which tend to be the more up to date versions).
