Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE

RowanMumsnet · 20/08/2014 14:42

Hello comrades

As lots of you will know, we've been developing a brand new, souped up version of the Mumsnet mobile site for seven geological eras quite a long time now.

We can now exclusively reveal that the new mobile site is... TOTALLY AND UTTERLY ABOUT TO BE RELEASED, LIKE, ANY TIME NOW.

We've tested it on loads of MNers (Flowers to those who have helped out) but inevitably there will be glitches that only reveal themselves once tens of thousands of you dive in and start using it - so please use this thread to let us know about those (with the usual info about browsers and devices).

And if you like it, please pass along Cake and Wine to ShamTech, BrunoTech, JessicaMumsnet and all the other techs and MHQers who have been working their digits off on this.

The new improved apps are coming, honest... but in the meantime, if the old apps are driving you bonkers, do please take the new mobile site for a test drive.

Rebecca thanks for your comments on the glitches. Are you going to address the hundreds of complaints regarding the functionality?

RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2014 11:15

@MrsVamos

Back on laptop, old desktop site, much better !

RebeccaMumsnet
Softening the white wont help me, sorry. Anything like that kind of makes me have to 'squint' to read text, and will incur the same issues I'm having on the mobile site. Sad

It's such a shame, I really loved being able to use my mobile to mnet, and now that option has been taken away.

I've also found that if you are just lurking on the mobile site, you can't even get to 'active convos' without having to select 'talk', then 'active'. Such a pain !

It's really not user friendly for me. I loved using my mobile to natter with my fellow tennis nuts, as it meant I didn't have to drag the laptop out and stay in one place to mnet.

I'm gutted. Sad

Hi MrsVamos,

We're happy to help if we can, can you tell us exactly what the problem is?

The desktop site is white too and the old mobile site had a white background with black copy.

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 11:23

Desktop site is OK because it is broken up with all the blue, and ads and different colours for other posters etc.

Like when you post, it breaks it up for me and I don't get any straining or squinting to read.

The post message area on new site is far too small, and I don't like that you can't scroll back to check what you have written, you have to preview.

The mobile site is just far too much white everywhere, theres nowhere or nothing to 'divert' your eyes, so it becomes painful to look at.

I have just posted on the tennis thread also that one of my 'triggers' that a fit is about to happen is that I get flickering in my eyes. The ads and the way the site is laid out is causing my eyes to flicker, making me wonder if today will be a grand mal day ?!

I much preferred the layout of the old site, with coloured posts and the way the threads were laid out. We seem to have lost all of it on the new site.

Sorry, I am being a right whiny mare, aren't I ? I think I will just have to go back to my old style of mnetting and devote days at a time to it, stuck on laptop, rather than being able to lurk and post with the freedom the old site afforded me. Sad

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 11:29

The post message area on new site is far too small, and I don't like that you can't scroll back to check what you have written, you have to preview.

What phone are you using? The size you can post in is pretty much the same for me, and I have no problems scrolling up and down withing the box. I suspect the flickering may also be down to your device as not all users are experiencing it?

May I make a suggestion MN? Create some sort of MN survey where respondents are required to list device/OS/browser etc with check boxes for common complaints and a box for further comments. This will make it much easier to prioritise issues, and will mean you can match issues up with devices.

TheDoctorSandshoesAndGrandad · 21/08/2014 11:31

Aide from everything that I'm sure has already been mentioned, the new mobile site doesn't seem to hit a point where it stops loading. This would really eat into my data allowance if I were out and about (which I primarily am when using the mobile site.

If I wanted fancy buttons etc I'd use the app. I liked that the mobile site was a slightly barer version of desktop (which I still have set to classic).

EarthMither · 21/08/2014 11:31

Tried again this morning and the ellipses button doesn't work for me at all. In fact none of the buttons seem to work (Nokia Lumia Windows phone). Posting this from DH iPad, desktop site, as I now can't do anything other than read MN on my phone Hmm

Please just change it back while you fix the issues MNHQ (or better still, give us a Classic Mobile Site option)

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 11:32

Shouldn't matter what phone I am using, it was fine on the old site.

Flickering is not down to device, I am not the only poster to comment on it, I think I am just the only one who has come back to try to help remedy some of the issues.

I think you are slightly biased anyway, aren't you, having been a tester ? Wink

ChairmanWow · 21/08/2014 11:33

mrsv you're not being whiny. I'm in the same boat. I had a migraine last night abd after about 15 mins of looking at the site this morning my head feels dodgy again. Am having to look at the keyboard on my iPhone as I type this instead of the background.

It needs to either be broken up a bit like the old site or a different colour. I'm going to lay off for a bit now in case I get another migraine. Really hope you get it sorted. I love coming to MN.

cakedays · 21/08/2014 11:37

Agh, one more post about this. Another feature lost, as a pp mentioned upthread, are the useful colour changes - not just on the highlight posts feature (which we used to be able to customer in different colours?), but also to distinguish user posts from sticky posts at the top of a board, and the colour change to tell you you've read a thread.
The visual impact of the old boards was really simple and you could see lots of thread titles at once, see which ones you'd already read from the colour change, scroll down quickly, and so on. Now it's cluttered and you only see a few thread titles - lots more scrolling down and it loses the visual impact of seeing what felt like much of the whole board at once.

Like someone else in the thread, I used TIO and TIW as a quick shortcut to jump between my most popular boards because of you click directly on the main "Chat", "AIBU" links etc. Another useful navigation feature that's been removed.

I've tried again with the site this morning to see if I can get used to it and I really can't. The functionality is slower and more cumbersome. It's like wading through treacle where it used to be easy and fast. Two clicks to move to top and the slower scrolling motion - really annoying. No ability to jump directly back to new posts on TIO - lots of time wasted scrolling. No page jump bar at top - ditto. I feel like I can only see half the site, it's a much slower and more tedious experience, and the rewards of seeing what people have posted on a thread are outweighed by all the repeated scrolling and tapping. I really don't like the user experience at all - it feels very old-fashioned.

The only bits of new functionality as far as I can see are the smilies, and the "Go to page" option - which isn't even working! Why lose so much of the basic functionality just to add these?

I can only think that the MNHQ team only tend to use the desktop site and so aren't accustomed to using only or mostly the mobile site, and so don't notice the changes in the user experience, or think they're not important because the mobile site is just a lesser version of the desktop format. But for those of us who use MN exclusively on the mobile site and when out and about, this really does ruin the whole user experience. I can't state this strongly enough Sad

This isn't like "one of those times when Facebook changes and everyone forgets about it in a few days", because even Facebook normally takes care to preserve the same level of functionality even if it switches it about or does a cosmetic redesign. As I posted above, it really is going backwards if you take functionality that used to be one step (one tap, easy and intuitive) and introduce another step (two taps into a drop-down) to do exactly the same thing. It might not matter as much if it's a little used feature. But something like the top button on posts and the top page jump bar were used routinely on every page by a lot more posters than I suspect MN thought. Hence my suspicions that HQ aren't heavy mobile site users themselves or they would immediately have noticed how heavy and cumbersome the new site feels without these features.

I know this is another long post but I really do think this will make me give up MN. Part of the addictive quality was how sheer bloody fast it was to navigate the old mobile site - on the bus, baby in jumperoo, waiting in a shop queue - quick couple of taps and you could keep abreast of TIO updates and scan the boards for something interesting. Now all the scrolling, extra tapping etc. makes it much less enticing. From being a pleasure it now feels like a real chore. I don't use the desktop site (for a variety of reasons including RSI, no laptop etc.) so I'm unlikely to keep on here if the mobile site stays like this.

Really, MN - please accept that this is a much worse version of the mobile site and people's upset about it really isn't going to be fixed by a few technical updates and a cheery "you'll get used to it" message. Sometimes things really are got wrong, and this is one of them.

whatdoesittake48 · 21/08/2014 11:39

Ive said it twice and I will say it again

Please put the saved button back!

Oh, and long threads just won't load....

LadderToTheMoon · 21/08/2014 11:40

I haven't rtft, but here's my two pennies worth...

(BTW, I've had to come onto the laptop to write this, rather than use the mobile site...)

  • I don't like the way the sticky/sponsored/MNHQ threads are not differentiated from the normal threads.
  • I used to like the way, when bookmarking, it used to say "Saving", then "Saved". I'm not sure whether it is my internet connection or what, but bookmarking can be very erratic on my phone (Samsung S3 mini). I liked the reassurance that the bookmark had worked!
Sherborne · 21/08/2014 11:40

Taking a couple of screenshots from a poster earlier on and putting them side by side, My feeling is that:

  1. The actual text in the old and new fonts takes up the same amount of space
  2. But the new font is physically larger (in terms of absolute letter size)
  3. And the new font itself is thinner in terms of pixel width

This means that the words and lines appear to be more crammed together in the new font (larger font covering the same screenspace), and at the same time, reducing the amount of "dark" pixels that make up each letter.

Hands up everyone who wants to try out the BRAND NEW MUMSNET MOBILE SITE
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 11:41

think you are slightly biased anyway, aren't you, having been a tester ?

Not biased it's just that some people aren't having issues. So its not something that needs changed for everything just particular phones eg it had become apparent from reading these threads that Windows phones seem to be particularly problematic as per usual so tech/s will have to look carefully at interactions between Windows phones in particular and the site.

Or your flickering issues, which as you said is being experienced by other users. If MNHQ can find out that all the users experiencing flickering are using a particular phone, or a particular browser, that goes a long way towards solving the problem.

primeminister · 21/08/2014 11:46

Hurrah. Have been obsessed with and addicted to mumsnet for far too long. This new mobile site is SO AWFUL that I am weaned instantly!! Why on earth did you change it? There was absolutely nothing wrong with old version... Hey ho at least I won't be wasting my life in mn now

WhistlingPot · 21/08/2014 11:48

I agree, I'm afraid. Was a late discoverer of the mobile site and was so amazed by it. It seemed so very well thought through, I could find little to improve on.

Agree with all the points made re: too much white and how it can strain the eyes.

I also don't know what n/name I'm posting under because it no longer says!

riverboat1 · 21/08/2014 11:50

Could MNHQ or a beta tester tell us how much of the missing functionality is due to glitches/bugs, and how much has been intentionally removed?

OP highlighting is obviously a glitch, but what about:

  • show all posts / flip thread
  • Threads I'm on showing most recent posts
  • Bookmarking
  • Colour highlighting for pinned/sponsored threads
  • 'MNHQ has commented on this post' links
  • Being able to choose which name to post under
nicename · 21/08/2014 11:51

I'm on a blackberry...

When I go into 'threads I'm on' all I can see is the thread name and how many recent (post-me) posts there have been. I can't click onto the later ones - only to the first page, then scroll down to the footer, press 'last page' then scroll down to find the latest posts.

Its a pain when the page is only aboit 1.5cm after the header and footer have been taken into account.

Am I missing a button or something?

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 11:51

You are biased, I'm sorry. Smile

From the threads I have seen, the majority of posters really don't like the new mobile site, and have asked why it needed to be changed anyway ?

It seems to me that far more posters are having issues than not.

I have already established that users experiencing flickering are not using the same phone as me, or browser, so I am sure HQ have got that too.

I am sure that HQ and Tech really aren't that fussed that little old me is having problems, as I can always use the desktop site on my laptop to mn, should I so wish. I really don't expect them to change things to suit me, or accomdate my needs. I manage my condition and thats down to me to look after myself and stop doing something that is making me feel awful.

On the new site, you have no option.

I cannot imagine what the other options were for a new mobile site if the new one is the best of what was tested !

Attheendof · 21/08/2014 11:53

The white of the desktop site is not the same white as the new mobile site. I can't explain that any better, they're just not the same and have different effects on eyes.
Am now on DT site and will not me trying mobile one again, it's awful.

runlikeagirl · 21/08/2014 11:55

I've checked that box, but still only colours the first post, not further down.

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 11:57

YY, Attheendof.

RebeccaMumsnet

If it helps (?!), the white on the mn desktop is like a matt finish, and the white on the mobile site is glossy/shiny.

The different shades of blue, and the way the pages and threads are laid out are good for breaking up the pages.

I feel like the child in the ad from years ago where he buries the car in the sand.

I'm not being much help, am I ? Grin

cakedays · 21/08/2014 11:57

Stickies stay on every single page you load in Chat, but there's no indication that they are sticky threads. How many times do I have to scan past the pampers tester sticky? The stickies fill the screen every time you load a new page - so much scrolling all the time. Blurgh.

HoVis2001 · 21/08/2014 12:00

R.e. the large quantity of white space, MNHQ, could one 'fix' be to replace the light blue band behind the username and date/time at the top of each post? Then you break up the screen a bit more, which I think is where the old mobile site had the advantage visually over the new one. Perhaps also rethink the text spacing so not as much scrolling is required?

Ad banner at the top - could it not be a fixed, still ad (or even 2 side by side) that refresh every time you go onto a new page / different thread? As I said previously, if as revenue is partially from click rates you're much more likely to get people clicking on something that a) does not cause irritation / headaches and b) sticks around long enough for people to 'process' that they may be interested in it.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 21/08/2014 12:01

Jadedangel, I thought that (empty TIO) but if you scroll down they're there after the sidebar ends Smile
