Sliders on Mumsnet

JessicaMumsnet · 04/06/2014 11:17

Hello everyone,

For a while we've realised that not everyone is aware of all of the different things happening across Mumsnet including webchats, book clubs and much more.

Over the next few weeks you may see little sliders appearing from the bottom right announcing upcoming events or things we think you might find interesting. We're trying out ways to let everyone know what's going on and this is part of the experiment.

If you close the slider by clicking on the 'X' then you won't be shown it again and they'll only be shown in select parts of the site.

As ever any feedback you have is always welcome so keep an eye out for them and let us know what you think!

I haven't seen one at all today, whether I was logged in or not (nor yesterday, now I come to think of it).

I don't keep myself logged in permanently, so tend to lurk first thing in the morning and will only log in when I want to join a conversation.

All is non-slidey at the moment Grin

cozietoesie · 19/06/2014 15:43

I deliberately hit the cross and haven't seen one since. (Mind you, I didn't see one anyway for a few days after the first - they must be both sparse and timorous.)

cozietoesie · 23/06/2014 19:16

The cross doesn't seem to be holding. I've just had 3 in quick succession on another board - for each of which I hit the cross.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 23/06/2014 19:37

Just had the same one come up three times in a row whilst reading a thread.

They are annoying and intrusive, and how come they keep coming even when you have pop-ups and adverys blocked? Another reason to stay off MN.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/06/2014 19:45

Had my first sliders today, same one reappeared three times after hitting x. This was on pc with Internet explorer.

Had one on ipad, but it only appeared once.

JessicaMumsnet · 23/06/2014 19:48

Hi everyone, we'll flag this to tech and ask them to take another look.

Please please please can we opt out of the incredibly annoying sliders?

FurryDogMother · 25/06/2014 19:16

I hate them. I've clicked on the x numerous times, and yet back they come. Grr.

Also seeing them for the first time today (firefox and on my laptop) It pops up on Active Conversations; I click it and it goes. I then go on a thread and then back to Active Conversations and up it pops again, ad infinitum. It's irritating.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 25/06/2014 19:51

And now I've posted on this it's stopped! Grin

Morecan · 25/06/2014 20:01

Please let us opt out of sliders - it would be fine if they did go away for good after one click, but the same one keeps appearing. I'm using the regular side on a mobile.

Morecan · 25/06/2014 20:01

Site.

NCISaddict · 26/06/2014 06:22

The sliders keep coming back for me too, even when I click on the cross. I'm not using incognito and don't clear the cookies. I'm on Google Chrome.
TBH it makes me less likely to follow up on whatever it's highlighting out of sheer annoyance not that I hold any opinion on PMQ and it's definitely not worth a petition.

Gintonica · 26/06/2014 10:20

They are really annoying even although I don't read them. I have downloaded as many ad-block programmes as possible and now Mumsnet are attacking my computer. Grrrrrrrr.

sunbathe · 26/06/2014 10:28

I had the same slider 3 or 4 times yesterday, on politics.

S4, native browser. Not incognito and not clearing cookies.

Can you make the cross bigger or something? Twice I ended up on the politics thread.

Showy · 26/06/2014 10:33

They don't bother me really. But I do keep getting the same one. PMQs iirc. Am on android, no browser changes.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 26/06/2014 10:35

I'm on an iPhone and they really annoy me!

The x is too small so I end up either clicking into a thread I don't want to by mistake or leave it there and it covers some of the screen

The content of the sliders seems to be generally irrelevant to those of us who live outside the UK. Can we opt out please?

KnockMeDown · 26/06/2014 18:38

Just came on here to find out what these annoying pop-ups are! I have had a few in quick succession, and keep clicking the cross, and they keep coming back. I really can't be bothered to read them, as I like to go to what I want to go to on MN, and the internet in general. Also why went to Chrome and adblocker!

So please, how do I get rid of these for good?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 26/06/2014 21:04

Tonight it is unbearable. Every time I go to Active Threads I get the PMQ slider.

The fact that it is about a stupid pointless campaign that is just designed to get MN in the news rather than actually do some good adds insult to injury.

Please make them stop.

PickledLilly · 26/06/2014 21:14

They're really bloody annoying and persistent and on an iphone the cross is so small it's quite hard to hit without opening up something that you weren't interested in in the first place. Please reconsider them, I don't think they will be a very popular move.

PickledLilly · 26/06/2014 21:16

That stupid PMQ one is popping up every time I do anything, it's seriously starting to piss me off actually. No amount of hitting the x is making the bastard thing stay away.

QuietNinjaTardis · 27/06/2014 09:47

I keep getting the pmq slider. I've clicked the cross and it keeps coming back. It is quite irritating. Why do we need sliders?
