Sliders on Mumsnet

JessicaMumsnet · 04/06/2014 11:17

Hello everyone,

For a while we've realised that not everyone is aware of all of the different things happening across Mumsnet including webchats, book clubs and much more.

Over the next few weeks you may see little sliders appearing from the bottom right announcing upcoming events or things we think you might find interesting. We're trying out ways to let everyone know what's going on and this is part of the experiment.

If you close the slider by clicking on the 'X' then you won't be shown it again and they'll only be shown in select parts of the site.

As ever any feedback you have is always welcome so keep an eye out for them and let us know what you think!

Thank you, JessicaMumsnet.

Thank you both it is very helpful to know that it is Safari on an iPad because then we can fix it.

We realise that several on this thread are less keen on general principle and we're always open to your thoughts. It's very early days and we'll be reviewing how well they are working along the way - but so far they have also helped some people find useful content so we need to consider that too.

We will definitely try to add in an option to customise regardless.

Oh ok. I'm on an iPad using safari if that's helpful.

I should have said - please enable us to turn them off IF you aren't going to get rid of them - but given that they don't seem to be very popular, please consider getting rid of them altogether. I suspect you won't listen to us on this.

I am accessing MN using Safari on an iPad, and the sliders keep reappearing, even though I have been clicking on the cross in the corner.

These are deeply annoying - please, please give us something in 'Customise' to allow us to turn them off for good.

@QuietNinjaTardis

I keep getting the pmq slider. I've clicked the cross and it keeps coming back. It is quite irritating. Why do we need sliders?

Sorry missed your question!

There's so much going on at Mumsnet that sometimes it's easy to miss things that we think (and hope!) you might be interested in.

We want to use sliders like you might get calendar reminders to flag up timely events. Typically it might be a book club starting or a webchat.

We'll revisit the design based on recent feedback so that everyone can be sure they are from us just giving little reminders.

When we tested with users the results were pretty positive and most felt that it was a good way to highlight other stuff happening and that the design was fairly subtle so not too intrusive.

We do realise that isn't everyone's point of view though so we'll also try to add an opt-out option.

Thanks again for all your feedback it's really good to know.

Hello all, we released a fix this morning to solve the closing problem in Firefox.

QuietNinjaTardis can you let us know which browser you were using and if this is still happening for you?

We'll take a look at adding them into customise and report back.

I find them immensely irritating but they do seem to have stayed away now I've clicked the cross and am using my Macbook (with Firefox).

I hoped there would be a "switch off sliders" option under Customise as they seemed to be more tenacious on my ipad.

That stupid PMQ one is popping up every time I do anything, it's seriously starting to piss me off actually. No amount of hitting the x is making the bastard thing stay away.

PickledLilly · 26/06/2014 21:14

They're really bloody annoying and persistent and on an iphone the cross is so small it's quite hard to hit without opening up something that you weren't interested in in the first place. Please reconsider them, I don't think they will be a very popular move.

Tonight it is unbearable. Every time I go to Active Threads I get the PMQ slider.

The fact that it is about a stupid pointless campaign that is just designed to get MN in the news rather than actually do some good adds insult to injury.

Please make them stop.

Just came on here to find out what these annoying pop-ups are! I have had a few in quick succession, and keep clicking the cross, and they keep coming back. I really can't be bothered to read them, as I like to go to what I want to go to on MN, and the internet in general. Also why went to Chrome and adblocker!

So please, how do I get rid of these for good?

The content of the sliders seems to be generally irrelevant to those of us who live outside the UK. Can we opt out please?

I'm on an iPhone and they really annoy me!

The x is too small so I end up either clicking into a thread I don't want to by mistake or leave it there and it covers some of the screen

They don't bother me really. But I do keep getting the same one. PMQs iirc. Am on android, no browser changes.

I had the same slider 3 or 4 times yesterday, on politics.

S4, native browser. Not incognito and not clearing cookies.

Can you make the cross bigger or something? Twice I ended up on the politics thread.

They are really annoying even although I don't read them. I have downloaded as many ad-block programmes as possible and now Mumsnet are attacking my computer. Grrrrrrrr.

NCISaddict · 26/06/2014 06:22

The sliders keep coming back for me too, even when I click on the cross. I'm not using incognito and don't clear the cookies. I'm on Google Chrome.
TBH it makes me less likely to follow up on whatever it's highlighting out of sheer annoyance not that I hold any opinion on PMQ and it's definitely not worth a petition.

Site.

Report

Please let us opt out of sliders - it would be fine if they did go away for good after one click, but the same one keeps appearing. I'm using the regular side on a mobile.

Also seeing them for the first time today (firefox and on my laptop) It pops up on Active Conversations; I click it and it goes. I then go on a thread and then back to Active Conversations and up it pops again, ad infinitum. It's irritating.
