Sliders on Mumsnet

Hello everyone,

For a while we've realised that not everyone is aware of all of the different things happening across Mumsnet including webchats, book clubs and much more.

Over the next few weeks you may see little sliders appearing from the bottom right announcing upcoming events or things we think you might find interesting. We're trying out ways to let everyone know what's going on and this is part of the experiment.

If you close the slider by clicking on the 'X' then you won't be shown it again and they'll only be shown in select parts of the site.

As ever any feedback you have is always welcome so keep an eye out for them and let us know what you think!

@Morethanalittlebitconfused

The miscarriage one was NOT welcomed today

We're so sorry that the sliders have upset you, that really was the last thing we intended Flowers

We understand that miscarriage is a tremendously emotive subject. We are promoting our campaign heavily because of feedback from Mumsnetters who have been through the same, and we feel that they deserve better miscarriage care.

Again, we are so sorry for any upset caused by this. Much love MNHQ Flowers

Hello, clicking the cross should stop you seeing it and other sliders. We'll ask tech to take a look and see what's happening there.
Thank you for letting us know

Hello again, we're really sorry some of you are having trouble with the sliders.

We're struggling to replicate the problem so please bear with us.

Would you mind telling us how you're accessing Mumsnet? Android, iPhone etc?

Thank you
Thanks

Can you confirm you're not using incognito to access mumsnet, or clearing the cookies, or using a different browser each time?

Thank you

JessicaMumsnet · 17/06/2014 13:55

Hi spiritofthetime we're really sorry this is happening for you, can you let us know what phone you are using? We can't get this to happen for us and we're really keen to get it fixed.

Naoko We do understand and completely agree it is not ideal. We thought long and hard about how and where sliders should be shown and they should go away when dismissed and not bother anyone again.

We also recognise that the miscarriage care campaign is really important to people and we do want to promote it. Not at the expense of upsetting people though so we've taken the slider off chat for now.

We are working really hard to try and identify the problem so this doesn't happen again, any more information you can give us to help diagnose any issue would be great thank you.

JessicaMumsnet · 19/06/2014 10:54

Thank you that's useful feedback we'll have a think about how we can make it more obviously mumsnet-ty. We are experimenting with different colours so we'll try and address that issue in next round.

Although we couldn't replicate your problem Fru we think it might be a case of the difference between logging in or out or reseting. We've made a couple of changes now generally and tightened it all up .

Hopefully you won't have this problem again but if you do just let us know.
Thanks

Hi everyone, we'll flag this to tech and ask them to take another look.

JessicaMumsnet · 27/06/2014 13:49

Hello all, we released a fix this morning to solve the closing problem in Firefox.

QuietNinjaTardis can you let us know which browser you were using and if this is still happening for you?

We'll take a look at adding them into customise and report back.

JessicaMumsnet · 27/06/2014 14:01

@QuietNinjaTardis

I keep getting the pmq slider. I've clicked the cross and it keeps coming back. It is quite irritating. Why do we need sliders?

Sorry missed your question!

There's so much going on at Mumsnet that sometimes it's easy to miss things that we think (and hope!) you might be interested in.

We want to use sliders like you might get calendar reminders to flag up timely events. Typically it might be a book club starting or a webchat.

We'll revisit the design based on recent feedback so that everyone can be sure they are from us just giving little reminders.

When we tested with users the results were pretty positive and most felt that it was a good way to highlight other stuff happening and that the design was fairly subtle so not too intrusive.

We do realise that isn't everyone's point of view though so we'll also try to add an opt-out option.

Thanks again for all your feedback it's really good to know.

JessicaMumsnet · 27/06/2014 19:38

Thank you both it is very helpful to know that it is Safari on an iPad because then we can fix it.

We realise that several on this thread are less keen on general principle and we're always open to your thoughts. It's very early days and we'll be reviewing how well they are working along the way - but so far they have also helped some people find useful content so we need to consider that too.

We will definitely try to add in an option to customise regardless.
