Android App "unable to connect with Mumsnet"

Hello. I've had difficulty with the Android app today and can't seem to connect. Is it just me? I keep getting an error message (hopefully I've attached a screenshot). I'm running Android 4.1.2 on a Samsung, if that matters.

I'm on the galaxy ace.. Same since last Thursday. The mobile site is so annoying, I know loads hate the app but it's my easiest way to MN. I am actually having withdrawals now..

Breezy1985 · 28/05/2014 19:23

I've tried on dd's galaxy young, same problem on there too.

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 28/05/2014 20:03

Galaxy ace here as well. I travel a fair bit for work and the app works much better on the move than the mobile site. 6 hours on a train tomorrow with no MN is not a good prospect. The mobile site is very irritating with pages loading repeatedly so you get taken back to the top of the page while you are trying to read.

I'm with the others who were a bit Hmm by the fact that no one actually checked the app, just presumed that it was related with the server issue. If they had they would have seen that it wasn't a slow loading issue.

Thurlow · 28/05/2014 20:03

It's because the app doesn't have adverts. I'm cynical. There's no need to rush to fix the app because it doesn't have adds.

Thurlow · 28/05/2014 20:03

ads, ffs...

mumeeee · 28/05/2014 20:15

Is the app going to be fixed soon? I have a Sony Xperia U. Finding the mobile site very difficult to use,

oldsilver · 28/05/2014 20:23

Samsung Galaxy Ace on Android version 2.3.6 and haven't been able to get on for the best part of a week. It is very frustrating as the mobile site is sooooo easy to use and navigate on a small screen.

Please Please Please get it fixed soon.

threepiecesuite · 28/05/2014 21:47

Missing the app very, very much.
Not working on my spanking new S5 , DP's S3 or the Galaxy Tab 3.

LaTourEiffel · 28/05/2014 23:24

HTC one app not working either, come on mumsnet!

Redglitter · 29/05/2014 01:27

This is absolutely ridiculous. How can an app be down for so long although the iPhone/iPad one works

Updates on what's happening wouldn't go amiss

FourForksAche · 29/05/2014 01:33

Wine Thanks for looking into it shamtech.

50ShadesofGreyMatter · 29/05/2014 08:27

Not working on my Galaxy S3 Sad

RowanMumsnet · 29/05/2014 09:28

@Thurlow

It's because the app doesn't have adverts. I'm cynical. There's no need to rush to fix the app because it doesn't have adds.

It's really not that, Thurlow. It's that these apps (iPhone and Android versions) were built by a third party, and not by our in-house developers. Making any changes at all is thus extremely time-consuming. The whole thing has been a big learning experience for us. (Our almost-ready new mobile site and apps are being built in-house and hopefully it will thus be much easier for us to make changes when we need to.)

We'll see if we can get an update for you now.

SpineInABap · 29/05/2014 09:36

Hmm, just looked on the Google Play Store and the Mumsnet app has only been downloaded between 5000 and 10,000 times, and that counts people who have uninstalled the app later. I thought there would be way more Android Mumsnet users than that! Perhaps we are in minority.

Unfortunately iTunes doesn't give the download total, but it shows 150 odd ratings, compared to 65 rating for the Android app. So from that, can we assume there are approximately 3 times as many iPhone/iPad users as Android users?

Looking at iTunes though, there are just as many people complaining about the app, so it's not just us! Wink

RowanMumsnet · 29/05/2014 09:36

OK - two (two!) members of our team will be working on this today so hopefully we'll have some progress for you soon.

RowanMumsnet · 29/05/2014 09:39

We know the current apps are not great. We sincerely expect the new ones (and the new mobile site) to blow them out of the water, UX-wise. We're very close to the testing stage with those now.

With a bit of luck, Site Stuff threads about apps will soon be a thing of the past

RunningKatie · 29/05/2014 10:08

New ones?Exciting!

lucysmam · 29/05/2014 10:17

Ooh, new ones does sound good Katie...wonder if they'll include pics!? (Btw...any post yet?)

Galena · 29/05/2014 10:40

Do you want testers for the new apps? Grin

TheCheesyBiscuit · 29/05/2014 11:36

barkingtreefrog · 29/05/2014 11:52

Err.. I can log in now, but nothing comes up in 'I'm on' or 'topics' or 'active'.... So I have an app again, but it's empty?!
