HemmingGate: To ban or not to ban, that is the question MNHQ

CarpeVinum · 30/12/2013 17:46

Some of us would like to know if a certain politico will be banned, proper.

No rush.

We know you have a lot on your plate with ... stuff.

(I probably got two quotes mixed up in subject line. Don't panic! It's me not you. Am philistine. Italy is wasted on me. Not keen on art, prefer shopping.)

Lilka · 03/01/2014 18:34

Yes, thank you Spero , Carpe , all the Italian posters and everyone who is responsible for this hitting the papers Smile

CarpeVinum · 03/01/2014 18:34

Actually I would Like to congratulate somebody else for the press finally getting interested.

Raises glass Wine

John, I am so so grateful that you put up that blog post, basically confiming that we weren't making it all up, thus (finally) giving the press a reason to prick up their ears (cos there evidently was some substance to the story) ....and run with it.

From the bottom of my cotton socks, I thank you.

We couldn't have done it without you.

Thanks

I really, really hope he is actually thick enough to try going after the nationals for their 'defamation'. I can't see what they have printed which is any different to the Birmingham Mail.

MurderOfGoths · 03/01/2014 18:37

Carpe Grin Fair point!

LakeDistrict I really hope I'm wrong, having read more of their posts on other articles, they are a bit of a twat (understatement) who thinks other delightful things like the "true Brits" are an endangered species due to forriners.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 03/01/2014 18:40

By "defamation" does he mean that something printed was untrue ? Everything I have seen printed so far has been factual (apart from some sensationalist press mix ups about exactly who was named by Mr Hemming)

he defamed himself, surely ?

if I had acted like this, I would be kicking myself very severely and apologising profusely to all and sundry, going for the dryathon with a vengeance and scouring "situations vacant" in the local rag

CarpeVinum · 03/01/2014 18:46

In British law can I go after somebody for defamation if they publically post that they suspect I am circulating the kids names via the screen shot more than John ever could have hoped to when he posted it on the cournty's busiest parenting site ?

OP posts:
CarpeVinum · 03/01/2014 18:46

or we are, i wasn't enitely sure if she was accusing me or us.

Mignonette · 03/01/2014 18:54

Good evening all of you.

How busy you have all been!

Still full of admiration.

Carpe You have the right to sue for defamation if they print something that you believe is untrue and casts aspersions upon you or your actions. If I am wrong, maybe one of the legal eagles will correct me? Smile

CarpeVinum · 03/01/2014 19:04

Ohhhh! goody.

Cos it's not true, I can prove it with my telecom Italia internet account and data trial

and I feel covered in aspertions !

OP posts:
WestmorlandSausage · 03/01/2014 19:07

best toast ever Carpe!

I remember the feeling so angry at that post when I first saw it and then having a calming glass of wine and realising that actually he had just done our grassroots attempt at showing the world his true character a MAHOOOSIVE favour.

I've had a look at the archive version of the birmingham mail story and agree that it doesn't say anything different to what the nationals are printing.

He clearly has some influence there somewhere if he has managed to get them to pull it.

Gah i've been pulling my hair out at work today wondering what has been going on!

Mignonette · 03/01/2014 19:08

Yes, the road to bad intentions has been carpeted in Hemming's aspersions......

Mignonette · 03/01/2014 19:09

Who might the shareholders be of that newspaper? Hmm

MadameDefarge · 03/01/2014 19:11

trinity group...mirror...ooh thats a point, nothing in the Mirror!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 03/01/2014 19:19

Hmm, I may be creating a false memory here, but I'm sure the big boss at TMP in cardiff is a Mr Hemming...

MadameDefarge · 03/01/2014 19:21

they have covered him in the past, kittengate being one. But I guess that was a public trial...

Spero · 03/01/2014 19:22

Insofar as I understand it - which is not very well - to 'defame' someone is to publish information about them which is untrue and which is damaging to their reputation. So I can see how Sally Bercow got into trouble with her tweets.

But what worries me is that rich people use legal proceedings simply as a threat to intimidate. Even if you know what you are saying about them is true and you can prove it, they are still going to drag you through the courts and cause you a lot of emotional stress etc.

I think the Birmingham Mail are a bit pathetic. I thought another journalist here said they wouldn't have published at all unless they were sure. They didn't say anything defamatory as far as I can see. JH has admitted to doing what was alleged. He just doesn't think it is serious.

CarpeVinum · 03/01/2014 19:23

I thought the Mirror leaned labour ?

OP posts:
MadameDefarge · 03/01/2014 19:23

that was when he was enjoying the attention

PacificDogwood · 03/01/2014 19:24

Oh my, I am breathless with excitement after catching up with the thread.

Apparently I have family to attend to (whose idea was that?), but I shall be back

CarpeVinum · 03/01/2014 19:30

Spero

It was this, included in a long "you toerag" flacoured screed...

Firstly, how invested are you in the lives of these children whose details you have now circulated far more widely than I suspect John Hemming ever succeeded in doing

You= me, by name, cos I was posting under my own name.

It not true. So that's libel ? Yes ?

She is in England, and I am not, can I still be libelled if I live over here ?

OP posts:
Spero · 03/01/2014 19:36

I am not sure what is being alleged against you. You have only circulated the names to very specific people because you were worried an order had been breached. You have not re-published the screen shots on your blog for eg.

if you are guilty of anything, then so am I because I forwarded the screen shots to Essex County Council! But how else are they to know what JH has done?

So I don't think this woman is saying anything which is actionable; just sounds like quite a nasty ill tempered comment which is par for the course for the internet.

IceBeing · 03/01/2014 19:37
DoItTooJulia · 03/01/2014 19:41

Checking in, having shaken off my festive name change.

Jess Phillips has publicly promised to never publish the name of vulnerable women or children anywhere ever in the wake of all this. Not that she ever would have.

The press coverage is awesome. Wonderful work. Now it just needs investigating properly by the people who have the power to do so.

Spero · 03/01/2014 19:43

Rather than continue to tidy up the living room, I am idly flicking through the links on the facebook group. Look at what he put on a student's website

The allegations about expenses are being discussed between me and The Times at the moment as what you report is untrue. The Times have taken down the web page. It would be good for you to remove that reference as well - See more at: brightgreenscotland.org/index.php/2010/12/dick-of-the-year-john-hemming/#sthash.Ud4U2v3A.dpufe!

The author responds - is that a threat?

Is the pope catholic? Do bears defecate in densely wooded areas?

Spero · 03/01/2014 19:43

So this is how he 'engages' with the public.
