Hello.

Given the amount of, erm, interest the Asda Christmas ad has generated on Mumsnet in the past few days, we thought it would be interesting/fun to find out how you all feel about the .

Do tell!

Not a patch on last years but still got me a bit sniffy.

Power of love is one if my fave christmas sings After a space man came travelling

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2012 11:20

I get that Soup. 6 million quid though Seriously?

EIizaDay · 10/11/2012 11:29

So very disappointed to read that John Lewis spent lots (too much) money going to the other side of the world to film this. I thought it looked like Scotland - and it should have been, or Wales.

Really bad that they didn't film in the UK, especially in these times.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2012 11:30

That was my point Eliza, even more depressing than the ad. Sad

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2012 11:32

'We have a responsibility to make something special' say JL. Well why don't they then?

SoupDragon · 10/11/2012 12:04

They didn't film in Wales or Scotland because it wasn't winter. And it's been pissing it down with rain for the best part of 8 months.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2012 12:20

I don't know why they think snow is necessary for a Christmas advert though. We hardly ever get snow at Christmas. Snowmen, robins etc-it's like one horrible tacky Christmas card.

EIizaDay · 10/11/2012 12:28

There was lots of snow in the highlands of Scotland up to March this year. Surely John Lewis can't be THAT short sighted? 6million pounds because they couldn't look ahead??

SoupDragon · 10/11/2012 12:28

Because snow is prettier than pissing down rain. Equally, "summer" is represented by hot weather, sunshine and all that malarky when, in reality, it is generally wet.

EIizaDay · 10/11/2012 12:29

6 million pounds would also have hired them a very good snow machine to have filmed anywhere. I can't believe they wasted this amount of money. Glad I'm not a shareholder.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2012 12:30

Just think what they could have done with 6 million quid. Sad

whatkungfuthat · 10/11/2012 16:07

That is an obscene amount for an ad

wigglesrock · 10/11/2012 20:29

Its a bit smug I think - mind you I think most JL ads are - maybe I'm just jealous because we don't have them here Grin I always find their ads to be a bit "mmmm if I were chocolate I'd eat myself".

WhenYouHearThatFireAlarm · 11/11/2012 22:35

Forgive me if its already been said..... I have read through a bit but am getting bad headache and just had to post before I go to bed.....does anyone think that the way the snowman is still.... A bit creepy ...then moves, but out of the audience sight, then still again...etc etc a bit like those stone angels in dr who? The ones that move when you blink and get nearer to you each time... With awful expressions on their faces, until they catch you up and turn you to stone?! I am not a dr who mega fan or anything! In fact the baddies creep me out so much I hardly watch it but i do like it! Also I can see the JL advert is well done etc and get the emotional aspect of it and the charm etc but it didn't really feel that festive to me.... Not just because of my random stone angels association!! The music was pensive and not very jolly and I didn't see many products!! Isn't that the main reason people (including myself) may be customers of JL....amazing products...lovely stores....get em in the ad.

WhenYouHearThatFireAlarm · 11/11/2012 22:40

Ok sorry folks I just read back a bit more, Kenleeeee I agree with what you said. In fact may never see snowmen the same way again! Smile

SchrodingersSexKitten · 14/11/2012 09:03

yes, just think what they could have done with 6M quid....
given it to the poor and then their xmas sales would go down as their brand awareness would be lower than all their competitors in the vital run up to Xmas and then they would make less profit and then their partner dividends would go down and then they would start losing top staff and finding it hard to recruit good staff and so the whole company would be less well run and then sales would get worse and then next year the company would be in crisis and then everyone who works for JL would be less secure in their jobs

but at least some poor people would have had 6M shared out between them so they would all have got about 20p

good point

NOT
