Quote facility?

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 04/08/2012 17:45

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find anything on it.
Is there a frightfully good reason why there is no 'quote' facility on MN? I would find it immensely useful...

Because you get 1,000 nested quotes and a response of 'I agree'.

Copy and paste and use "s.

I still agree, and what's more, it makes threads really confusing and practically unreadable

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 04/08/2012 18:16

It has been done before, many, many, many times - so not sure why you can't find anything on it?! I don't think site stuff gets deleted does it?? We've even had polls on it Grin

The vast majority don't want it (for the reason Tee said) and because it gets far too confusing on a site that's so busy.

Copy and paste with a ^ each side works quite well :)

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 04/08/2012 18:16

x-posted - sorry to mess it up! Grin

HecateHarshPants · 04/08/2012 18:18

Sorry, couldn't resist Grin I do think having a quote facility would just encourage people to quote quote quote quote quote. It would get so messy.

I've been on forums where there is this facility and it's really hard to work your way through it. It really interrupts the flow of conversation.

But yes: we had a Heated Debate a wee while back and most people violently agreed they didn't want a quote facility.

I think a quote facility would be good.

usualsuspect · 04/08/2012 20:02

oh and a timed edit function would be useful too.

HecateHarshPants · 04/08/2012 20:58

Oh yes. 'You've got five minutes to change your mind, do you really want to be a twat?' or 'Is it really spelled that way?' Grin

usualsuspect · 04/08/2012 20:59

I type replys out all the time then change my mind before I hit send Grin

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 04/08/2012 22:24

Thanks for the insight Grin

I put 'quote facility' into the search function and got sod all of any use.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NetworkGuy · 05/08/2012 08:20

They wouldn't need to write 'I agree' if they could just give a post a "+1" or "like" it, or a "thumbs up" to indicate their support... Grin

A few years ago, AOL customers were derided as "me too" people who had no ideas of their own (and AOL was bottom of a Which? 'satisfaction with your ISP' ranking [yet again])... just in case anyone needs a reason [other than the fact TalkTalk owns AOL] to ditch their AOL e-mail address, an switch ISP!

Tee2072 · 05/08/2012 08:21

Or, you know, we could all just keep talking to each other using language and actual words.

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 05/08/2012 08:25

NetworkGuy · 05/08/2012 08:26

It doesn't preclude that option.

Tee2072 · 05/08/2012 08:39

It certainly does and creates a lazy site with no discussion.

Tee2072 · 05/08/2012 08:44

Sorry, wasn't finished, got interrupted by a tantrumming 3 year old.

In any event, it creates a lazy site with no discussion. And turns MN into Facebook.

Now, I love Facebook. But it's not for discussion. It's for brief moments in time. It's for liking pictures and comments and having an occasional conversation.

Don't make MN like Facebook.

WendevilleAndManlock · 05/08/2012 08:45

MN is a conversation. Pretty sure most people don't quote back to the other person before replying, in RL.

savoycabbage · 05/08/2012 08:51

Exactly. Its a conversation. 'does my bum look big in this?' 'does my bum look big in this.' 'yes' is not a conversation.
