can we "like" posts? sometimes people really make me laugh and I would like to "like" their posts, is there a like button, and if not can we get one please?

OP posts:
NetworkGuy · 12/07/2012 03:56

I guess very few of the "No No No No No" side have even considered what was written by Justine in the other thread, about it being optional and not even visible to people if they don't wish to use it, so for all the stick in the muds it should not make a bit of difference if you don't want to use it yourselves.

Not even willing to give it a try is a very blinkered view, in my opinion, and suggestions about how it might change MNet are speculative.

Who knows what difference it might make?

"just say no" seems to be how some think all the time!

There are lots of registered MNetters but I think MNHQ knows a large chunk never post. I see even a "thumbs up" or a "thumbs down" as "participation" and it might lead at a later time to writing a post. On some areas of MN, there may be "lurkers" frightened to post not you, of course, if you are participating here because they may see cliques disrupting a thread or who appear to "take sides" and might make snide remarks. It can be a bit daunting for a newcomer for whom MN might be the place where they should not feel threatened and may benefit and contribute but spend most time just reading, never posting.

ExitPursuedByABear · 12/07/2012 09:37

And clicking a like button is a valid contribution?

If you want to lurk, lurk, if you want to participate get those fingers on that keyboard and contribtute to the discussion.

And what others have said - people put something sad on FB and others 'like' it - wtaf is that all about.

I think many people feel very, very strongly about this subject, and if MNHQ had been serious about trailling it, surely they would have done so rather than quietly forget about it.

NetworkGuy · 29/07/2012 11:07

HelenMumsnet wrote "Given the weight of feeling here, though, is this something most folks would still like us to try?"

Of course. It has been raised several times, but nothing yet done by MNHQ.

It's not just the stick in the mud posters in Site Stuff who have a possible interest but everyone, so please don't be put off by a number of "status quo" request because they don't like the idea (and seemingly ready to man the barricades every time someone else asks this question).

You've introduced change before without any discussion, so why does it seem so hard for this, in particular, please? Make it a 6 or 12 month trial to allow time for those who appreciate it to find out and those who don't to disable it, since the earlier description suggested it could be invisible to those who don't wish to see/use it. That way you can get a real idea whether (as some suggest) it could have any detrimental effect on posting.

PS Operation went fine.

Staff and (most) patients were friendly and the food was great. 5* service and attention from the student nurses (including the amazing "soft hands Laura" who gave me injections [in the stomach] that I never felt). Delayed being let out because of an infection/temperature (shivering so bad the automatic blood pressure tester wouldn't work) but been home a few days now (just have not retrieved bulk of PCs and laptops from the attic, placed there for safety).

TeamGBIWI · 29/07/2012 11:14

Glad your op went well, NG.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this to be honest. I like being able to 'like' posts on FB - sometimes I comment, sometimes I just want to acknowledge a post that has been made. And as has been pointed out , I can't really see what harm it would do here. If you want to use the facility, you could - but nobody would be forcing you.

On the other hand, I also get the point about MN being more about conversation and about something more considered than FB. So on balance, I think I trial of it might be worth at least considering.

What I really don't like is the 'recommend' button, that posts things on FB. I have noted several times that it's often used on contentious threads, and I can't help but feel it's a way of rounding up a supportive posse on FB - thus taking stuff off board in a rather unpleasant way.

NetworkGuy · 29/07/2012 18:53

Glad to see someone "open" to a trial (as had been suggested by MNHQ a year ago).

No idea what the difference is between "like" and "recommend" (not bothered with FaceBook myself).

I'm used to seeing "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" (rather than a lopsided "like" but no "dislike" option).

HotUKdeals.com has just "+" and "-" to increase/decrease the "heat" of a deal someone has seen and shared on the site.

The hotter it is, the more people consider it worthwhile. Plenty of bargains never get more than slightly warm, but it seems a rarity to see anything freezing (can happen if a much better deal has recently been posted, of course)

NetworkGuy · 04/08/2012 10:51

ANY NEWS PLEASE MNHQ ?

Hello. And hats off to NetworkGuy for your persistence Smile

We haven't forgotten about the fact that we'd forgotten about this

But, with the best will in the world, even if more than a few folks would like the trial, it really ain't going to happen over the summer. We just don't have to resources to sort that out over the main holiday period.

Do please nudge us to revisit this - if you'd like us to - in a month or so's time.

TeamGBIWI · 04/08/2012 19:03

Grin @ Helen.

You think he's going to forget, don't you?!

HellenicGamesMumsnet · 04/08/2012 19:09

Grin @ Helen.

You think he's going to forget, don't you?!

No, we know NetworkGuy better than that! Grin

HecateHarshPants · 04/08/2012 19:14

What would be the point of it?

Not being snarky or anything Grin I just don't get it.

It's not adding an opinion, chatting or contributing to a thread. So what's it for? And would it be a big long list of names? A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H ... like this post.?

What for?

I stress I am not being funny Grin but actually asking in all seriousness.

NetworkGuy · 04/08/2012 19:26

I remembered from last year, I certainly won't forget, however many keep saying Noooooooooo (and the thread last year was 3rd, 4th or moreth about the same topic, just that most who have asked have been driven away overwhelmed by the stalwarts stick in the muds who think it can be banished forever on their say-so).

Hecate read all the previous threads asking about it, and all the arguments for and against. The against are mainly
a) we don't want it
b) it is a bit like FaceBook, and we think that's bad
c) it will kill discussion (never know unless tried!)
d) it adds nothing (but that ignores fact it would be optional so no effect if a person hates the idea)
e) it will mean there is a chance of bullying (as if that doesn't happen already)
f) will get lots of negative votes and (ahhhh, grow a thicker skin!)

I will leave you to collate the reasons 'for' as I am about to soak in the bath for an hour or more.

HecateHarshPants · 04/08/2012 19:29

You want me to read a hundred threads? Do you think I am not a lazy person or something Shock Grin

NetworkGuy · 04/08/2012 19:30

PS Thanks Helen. All understood. Just goes silent for months days from MNHQ on some threads where a brief closing "on the to do list, but don't hold your breath" type statement would have been nice. I trust that is the case and will definitely nudge at initially regular, and then increasingly frequent intervals, in the Autumn and Winter, respectively.

NetworkGuy · 04/08/2012 19:31

Hecate - if there were 100 threads I would expect a lot of MNetters who had asked to have left. I think it is under half a dozen threads.

NetworkGuy · 04/08/2012 19:32

Bath, hot, now Grin

catinboots · 04/08/2012 19:43

Erm. Was I not clear? Can you not hear me?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Obvs I think my opinion overrides all others

catinboots · 04/08/2012 19:43

That was 'like' as in 'you hearing me dudes'

Not ''''LIKE'''
