The Name Mumsnet sexist?

I have a question. Is this site for Parenets or mums? are only mums parents?

OP posts:
Honeydragon · 18/03/2012 21:52

No...the brushes are too small Sad

crazynanna · 18/03/2012 21:53

and yet 3 mums are in the logo.

Nah...that's DamianTech in a wig mate

smthchri · 18/03/2012 21:55

well I could say.. If mumsnet does really want to be "by parents for parents" and you tell me that the majority of members are mums or women.. If you ever wish to be for parents you will need more fathers to join. Maybe it should say By mums for parents. or By mums for mums. The name and logo is just off putting. infact my GF said.. why do you want to join that mum site? I am questioning why.

Onesunnymorningin2012 · 18/03/2012 21:58

Or you could let it drop and enjoy chatting with the lovely people on here?

(BTW I'm not a parent, and couldn't give a shit about the name. )

Honeydragon · 18/03/2012 21:59

Yes but what about the people who join who are not parents?

MamaMaiasaura · 18/03/2012 21:59

What a rather dense opening post. Surely by the same "thinking" mothercare is just for mothers?! I'm guessing without trawling this who pointless thread it's related to that pathetic group FFJ, and if so, isn't that name "sexist" too by the same strange reasoning?

BIWI · 18/03/2012 22:00

Well why don't you have a good look round? See what all the fuss is about and why so many people think this is a fab place to be and post?

Honeydragon · 18/03/2012 22:02

And yes why not engage and join in? try other threads out?

Why is this particular site so very important that you join, yet want changed?

Why would your GF question you wanting to join it?

smthchri · 18/03/2012 22:08

To be honnest I have never been in mothercare.. and never will either. I dont know of mnay men that have, In fact I think i have but I was with a woman . lol. I would imagine they mainly aim their marketing at women, men dont get much of a look in. Have any men on mums net been to mothercare? so I guess it is.. but then again from what I can remember of my childrens mother she was getting ready before the children was born. Which I guess mothercare have tapped into.

OP posts:
Honeydragon · 18/03/2012 22:15

My dh has been to Mothercare, lots.

he does not post on mnet, but he doesn't post on any forums inc fb and twitter.

Honeydragon · 18/03/2012 22:17

Out of interest, you say you came from fb. You haven't posted anywhere else on here. and you infer you wanted a parents site.

What were you hoping to find here when you logged on?

QIelf · 18/03/2012 22:17

Goodness you are taking things rather literally.

You know, some organisations start off with a name reflecting their beginnings, and stick with it as business grows for reasons of branding, as detailed already on this thread.

Carphone Warehouse sell mobile phones from shops. Do carphones still exist?
Boots don't sell wellies, they sell soap.
I used to watch Men And Motors, despite being neither.
Virgin holidays, phones, broadband etc welcome custom from any old shagger.
Selfridges sell more than fridges. In fact I'm not even sure they sell fridges at all.....

smthchri · 18/03/2012 22:19

@Honeydragon.. Why would your GF question you wanting to join it?

IT is called Mumsnet.com with 3 women on the logo.. that is it.. so why would Fathers join?

SweetTheSting · 18/03/2012 22:20

FYI, as you don't remember being in Mothercare, probably about 20% of the stock is aimed at mothers (that would be the maternity wear and post-birth 'soothing' products). The rest is aimed at parents, grandparents, friends, relatives, childminders... anyone wanting to stock up with toys/kitchenware/equipment/shoes/clothes/books for children in the range 0-8(ish).

Thus My DH has been into Mothercare. Quite a lot.

All their catalogues that I can recall have one or more cute children on the front, no mothers or fathers.

I assume they too have weighed up the loss of brand recognition in a name change versus any 'sexist' perception and concluded that they'll stick with what they've got. Plus Kiddicare probably bagged the best alternative... Do let us know how your campaign goes over with them, though.

I am a bloke and I use mumsnet - I don't understand why it can't still be called mumsnet, just because people other than mums use it too. I have found the community here really interesting, and have had some great political debates with fellow mumsnetters. I tend to stick to the bits of the forum that are relevant to me as a bloke. I don't have tits, so I don't go on the breast feeding bit (even though I would like to think I know loads about breasts). I know quite a bit about computers, so I try to help people on the tech threads. I am an "aggressive atheist" (not my words), so I like a good argument on the religion threads. There is something for everyone to be honest.

I presume you are the sort of person who goes to Pizza Express and complains that they have got pasta on the menu. The utter bastards for having a hi-carb food inclusive policy! Next you will be telling be they do salad too! Will this madness never end!

Why should an organisation change it's name just because it has decided to do more things are offer something to everyone. If hoover can make washing machines without changing their name, then why can't mumsnet keep their name.

Clearly you just have something against mumsnet and are looking for an argument! If the name and the logo is putting you off, then go to burger king (I must warn you, they sell ice cream there, you might not be able to cope with it).

Onesunnymorningin2012 · 18/03/2012 22:21

For the same reason that non-parents join - it's a huge forum with lots of interesting people.

smth - namechange and start again, eh? Otherwise off you go, you've had enough attention.

(bloke here who was overly familiar with Mothercare and their bank balance when necessary.)

MamaMaiasaura · 18/03/2012 22:28

Op - does this mean an onmibusman is always male. Blacks sports shop is for only black people. Starbucks coffee is only for pilots from battlestar gallactica. John Lewis is only for people of that name?

Honeydragon · 18/03/2012 22:29

I have to admit I agree with technodad that you simply want an arguement about the logo.

What I mean by your gf asking is, assuming you are a parent why shouldn't you use a parenting forum.
Would she question you going to mothercare to buy something for your child?

Are you and your GF parents?

BIWI · 18/03/2012 22:36

Of course he just wants an argument, Honey!

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/03/2012 22:39

I have discovered that Topshop sell jeans, dresses and other stuff, not just tops. And Boots! I went in and they didn't sell any boots, none I tell you.

What's that all about?

Smth is a parent as his said his children's mother used mothercare. Odd way to refer to her, usually it would be ex or dp not "children's mother". I sense some hostility to the ex, perhaps lack of access and this poster is a member of the ridiculous little group who are trying to bully all and sundry. Dammit we've been feeding him words instead of Biscuit or [pom]
