Who else is fed up with swearing on MN?

I have been trying to have this discussion on another thread, but don't want to hijack it further.

I am thoroughly sick of excessive swearing on MN. I am sick of encountering posters with sweary names (not least because I have to hide MN as soon as the children come into the room).

MNHQ, could you please look at this again? Every time I mention this on threads, I am told that I have a cat's bum face (which is immensely irritating) and to eff off to Nethuns - yet I loathe the huggy/kissy/hunny stuff, and detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored. However, part of being an adult surely means having some consideration for other people too?

Here is Justine in May 2005:

"Hi all,
We've had a few complaints about obscene language on the boards. Our policy on this is that we would appreciate it if people would keep foul and abusive language to a minimum and that if you feel it necessary to swear to make your point then use asterisks please [...] we don't want to be over-prudish about this - we're not talking minor offenses here - and sometimes (parking attendant, gp receptionist annecdotes etc etc) we agree that nothing else but a swear word will do but it's a fair point that lots of members look at mumsnet with kids who may be early readers at their side and as the saying goes... less is more sometimes, so if you could use your discretion it would be much appreciated.

Ta very much."

That seems eminently sensible - but MN seems to have somehow slithered into a site for sweary people only.

Am I the only person who is utterly fed up with it?

I was told on another thread that my opinions would be taken into account by MNHQ

Reminds me of ''I'm telling on you'' Grin

KouklaMoo · 10/10/2011 19:12

I like the swearing - it doesn't offend me in the slightest. And some of it is so inventive - it gives me a whole new vocab to insult my dh with Grin

Hungrydragon · 10/10/2011 19:14

Sue, as always, is right fucking menaces.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/10/2011 19:15

It depends. If someone is smart enough to add humour with swearing then I've no problem with it. If it's just purely to be aggressive and they can't think of anything cleverer to say than "fuck off to Netmums" then I don't like it.

I like Vampire's earlier post asking if accounts could be set to filter sweary words.

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 10/10/2011 19:16

They're everywhere, HoneyDragon. Ninja badgers are the worst cos you can't fucking see them.

Oops, I swore.

Sorry OP.

SuePurblybilt · 10/10/2011 19:17

What luffly cute badgers, with their woffly wee noses.

Don't turn your back on them though. Ever.

TheSkiingGardener · 10/10/2011 19:19

Some people hate the swearing, some people hate the new look, some people want a like button or the facility to quote threads.

You can't please everyone. Decide if it's enough of an issue for you to bugger off, choose to take your comments elsewhere, unregister, debate on another forum over it or not.

Just to show I wasn't using bugger off because of a lack of alternatives.

It really doesn't bother me. I don't tend to swear much in threads, although I do in real life.

I can't really understand why people get so worked up about it on what is a site for adults.

If I wanted to be rude about you, I could be just as rude by using language that is perfectly 'decent', 'civilised' and non-sweary. I would hope that you would be more offended by that than the swearing. So what is the point of being offended by a few other words?

And I think the amount of swearing is exaggerated, personally.

josephinebonaparte · 10/10/2011 19:37

Ffs

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 10/10/2011 19:41

It doesn't bother me.
Sometimes I can be eloquent, sometimes I swear like a navvy.
If you don't like something then you have the power to ignore it. You don't have to use the site.

ThePathanKhansWoman · 10/10/2011 19:51

Doesn't bother me, sometimes only an expletive will do, it is an adult (allegedly) forum.

Everybody is entitled to their opinions.
But OP, with this thread you do sound like a tittle tattle.
Like, you got no result from the previous thread, so you come on here to find out if MNHQ are 'on your side'.
If Justine ever annonuces that no one is allowed to swear anymore I'll be out of this site, but will start another one called mumsswearnet.
Bet loads of people will join.

Tyr · 10/10/2011 20:40

Sometimes a profanity will hit the parts that other words can't reach. I try not to swear in front of my child (can't say the same for her mother) but she still came out with my all time favourite.
She was two at the time and we had just missed the bus to meet her mum. She took her thumb out of her mouth and calmly and sweetly made the following observation: "Oh no dad, we're fucked."

ByJingoes · 10/10/2011 21:08

Is that supposed to be cute/clever, Tyr? Each to their own.

"We are mothers, but we are loud lewd raucous opinionated bolshy and bitchy, as well as all that other selfless caring stuff that we do most of time, I love that.

Sometimes in RL I miss the old loud lewd raucous bitchy me, so I come to MN to find her again."

Now, that is an interesting post. I am not, and have never been, loud, lewd, raucous, bolshy or bitchy either in RL or on here. (I have most decidedly been opinionated Grin). Maybe that's the crux of the matter. Though it would be a shame if MN were to become a site only for the loud and lewd brigade (which is what I fear it is becoming).

LadyEvilEyes, I fear there is nothing I can usefully say to change your mind. I stopped hijacking a previous thread to continue this discussion (whoever suggested that was quite right to do so). I don't want MNHQ to be 'on my side' (fat chance!) - but I would like MNHQ to be aware that they are losing the support of people whose opinions and beliefs are just as valid as those of the particularly loud and sweary ones. If 'ordinary' people de-camp, then MN is the loser in the long run, and what little political influence that it might have will fade away completely. Is that what everyone wants?

I am also repeatedly struck by the particularly gross contrast between the soupy sentimentality I see on some threads and the gross crudity on others - often by the same posters. If you are calling someone a c* in one post, it's hard to take the apparent sympathy and concern seriously in another one.

OP posts:
SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 10/10/2011 21:12

So someone who's capable of insulting someone, with or without swear words, is incapable of sympathy, empathy, and the desire to help others? Hmm

I'm melting, melting, ooooohhhhhh what world...

VampiresWearBlackVelvet · 10/10/2011 21:18

Ok, it appears that we all need to choose one mood and stick to it.

Wonders what mine would be?

Or can't I just be a little bit of everything??

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 10/10/2011 21:18

Im actually far more offended by passive aggressive sniping. I'd rather be called a "cunt" than a "dear"
