Who else is fed up with swearing on MN?

I have been trying to have this discussion on another thread, but don't want to hijack it further.

I am thoroughly sick of excessive swearing on MN. I am sick of encountering posters with sweary names (not least because I have to hide MN as soon as the children come into the room).

MNHQ, could you please look at this again? Every time I mention this on threads, I am told that I have a cat's bum face (which is immensely irritating) and to eff off to Nethuns - yet I loathe the huggy/kissy/hunny stuff, and detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored. However, part of being an adult surely means having some consideration for other people too?

Here is Justine in May 2005:

"Hi all,
We've had a few complaints about obscene language on the boards. Our policy on this is that we would appreciate it if people would keep foul and abusive language to a minimum and that if you feel it necessary to swear to make your point then use asterisks please [...] we don't want to be over-prudish about this - we're not talking minor offenses here - and sometimes (parking attendant, gp receptionist annecdotes etc etc) we agree that nothing else but a swear word will do but it's a fair point that lots of members look at mumsnet with kids who may be early readers at their side and as the saying goes... less is more sometimes, so if you could use your discretion it would be much appreciated.

Ta very much."

That seems eminently sensible - but MN seems to have somehow slithered into a site for sweary people only.

Am I the only person who is utterly fed up with it?

Awww.... FearTricks didn't wilt.... :(

Vampires I'd snog you but I'm too scared you'll have snot in your mouth

smartyparts · 10/10/2011 21:21

I like the swearing on MN, it makes me laugh.

ChippingIn · 10/10/2011 21:22

Why is it hard for you to accept that I might think Frank is a complete wanker for fucking his secretary on one thread and on another thread give a hug to someone who has just been through something upsetting. That's your strange issue to sort out.

Nothing wrong with swearing - if you don't like the way MN is, find another website - it's not the only one nor is netmums the only alternative.

FearTricks - feel free to PM me :)

CristinadellaPizza · 10/10/2011 21:22

I think the PA :) cuts deepest.

Just wondering if the the posters who swear lot here do it to the same degree in rl?

NotanOtter · 10/10/2011 21:25

i find it a massive turn off tbh

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 10/10/2011 21:25

agree with chipping.

I can swear like a trooper when I want to, but over on the mc or IF boards, Im a totally different poster (unless Im talking about consultants). because they are different threads. its not rocket science. and the swearers are the ones with limited intellect? Wink

vampires, what is your usual name? I feel like I recognise/know you.

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 10/10/2011 21:26

God no, DrinkLemon - I swear on MN as my outlet.

Butter wouldn't melt in my mouth in RL, me.

VampiresWearBlackVelvet · 10/10/2011 21:26

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 10/10/2011 21:28

Vamp I only just now squizzed by it and was revolted by the snot sucking

Lissie Hover over my name, the clue is there.

But incase you didn't know me in the first place I was VelvetSnow

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 10/10/2011 21:28

drink, no. unless Im out with my friends, or the situation calls for it. posters dont pepper their posts with pofanities in a "fucking hell, I just baked a twatting cake. it is cocking well lovely" its used as it is in rl. I dont swear in front of ds. but I swear on mn. because its a site for adults.

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 10/10/2011 21:29

ah, I knew I like you! glad you came back

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 10/10/2011 21:29

I thought my clue was good.....

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 10/10/2011 21:30

A twatting cake??!! Shock

Tyr · 10/10/2011 21:30

Is that supposed to be cute/clever, Tyr? Each to their own.

At the time it was as appropriate as it was funny. What exactly is your point or problem? There are other sites where your delicate sensibilities wont be offended by all this nasty, beastly swearing.
Is there some particular reason why you are still hanging around on this one with its nasty foul-mouthed posters or can you really not bear the thought of MN losing someone as witty, erudite and helpful as yourself?

LauraIngallsWilder · 10/10/2011 21:33

Hi Byjingoes
TBH the swearing annoys me intensely as well.

If its swearing because someone has had a really bad day, its maybe understandable
Recently my most particular annoyance has been people posting "Jesus" or "Jesus Christ" as a swear word.
I cant help but think why is that apparenly tolerated when if anyone got cross and said "Oh Fxxxing Mohammmed" or whatever I can well imagine there would be uproar.

I regularly remind my ds that swearing doesnt make you look or sound clever it just makes you sound ignorant (in our house swearing is for Gutter Rats - partly just because of the glottal stop in gutt'er)

If all I read when I have a look at MN is a load of swearing I tend to wander off elsewhere. MN of old wasnt full of swearing - At the risk of sounding like an old bat 'its the dumbing down of society'.....................

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 10/10/2011 21:34

my twatting cakes are legendary!

Hungrydragon · 10/10/2011 21:34

I am also repeatedly struck by the particularly gross contrast between the soupy sentimentality I see on some threads and the gross crudity on others - often by the same posters. If you are calling someone a c* in one post, it's hard to take the apparent sympathy and concern seriously in another one.

Totally disagree with that statement. In life as well as internet forums kindness and compassion are emotions. Empathy has nothing to do with what you were doing five minutes ago elsewhere.

That's like saying if someone disagrees with you on a politics thread you refuse to believe them if they agree with you on a fashion thread.

Tuppenyrice · 10/10/2011 21:48

That's 10 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
Fuckers.

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 10/10/2011 21:50

laura, its a bit different saying "fucking Mohammed" (as I assume you asterixed out) to saying Jesus Christ. Hmm

pictish · 10/10/2011 21:51
