Who else is fed up with swearing on MN?

I have been trying to have this discussion on another thread, but don't want to hijack it further.

I am thoroughly sick of excessive swearing on MN. I am sick of encountering posters with sweary names (not least because I have to hide MN as soon as the children come into the room).

MNHQ, could you please look at this again? Every time I mention this on threads, I am told that I have a cat's bum face (which is immensely irritating) and to eff off to Nethuns - yet I loathe the huggy/kissy/hunny stuff, and detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored. However, part of being an adult surely means having some consideration for other people too?

Here is Justine in May 2005:

"Hi all,
We've had a few complaints about obscene language on the boards. Our policy on this is that we would appreciate it if people would keep foul and abusive language to a minimum and that if you feel it necessary to swear to make your point then use asterisks please [...] we don't want to be over-prudish about this - we're not talking minor offenses here - and sometimes (parking attendant, gp receptionist annecdotes etc etc) we agree that nothing else but a swear word will do but it's a fair point that lots of members look at mumsnet with kids who may be early readers at their side and as the saying goes... less is more sometimes, so if you could use your discretion it would be much appreciated.

Ta very much."

That seems eminently sensible - but MN seems to have somehow slithered into a site for sweary people only.

Am I the only person who is utterly fed up with it?

OP posts:

Awww.... Can we all join hands now and sing Cunt Kum Ba Yah?

Hungrydragon · 11/10/2011 10:31

Right, clearly swearing and in jokes are bad, but as any joke not got by a person but got by others, could then be construed as in an in joke all joke must go. Therefore all the funny threads or light hearted conversations must go.

So no light threads please.

Lets have nice worthy conversations, about religion and politics, whoops no, potential for blaspheming there.

No scratch all the other topics lets stick to parenting.

But hang on parenting is emotive, people might swear....

Maybe food, nope Gordon Ramsey might do a web chat, off it goes

oh.

"Hellloooooo, I say MNHQ. can you tell Justine to be a dear and shut down Mnet please. Thank you muchly."

Cosmic. Fucking. Harmony.

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 10:32

hehe "BJ"

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 11/10/2011 10:33

Does that mean duck fucking is out then?

Sad

Sorry OP, must be an in-joke

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 10:34

i feel for you, ByJingoes... you're fighting against a tide that has actually long gone out on here tbh. i agree with soupy et al re titles and names, but obv would never ban swearing, would just hope that people would show consideration. nothing finer than a well-placed swear word, imo, but i don't personally think that most are that well-placed at the moment. Grin

PosiePetrifyingParker · 11/10/2011 10:34

I like swearing, I am not Mrs Sweary in real life, but I do like it.

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 10:36

oh, and i also don't think you should leave, OP. seems a shame after five years on here. there are plenty of threads on here that aren't aggressive i think.

AnyPhantomFucker · 11/10/2011 10:36

fanjo stop being so fucking childish Grin

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 10:37

fuck off AnyF*ker, I find your name offensive WinkGrin

Hullygully · 11/10/2011 10:39

BJ - you have been here FIVE YEARS? And you're worried about in-jokes?

AnyPhantomFucker · 11/10/2011 10:39

what about my phantom do you like that ?

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 10:40

no it contains fucking offensive swearing Grin

GetOrfMo1Land · 11/10/2011 10:42

I actually never, ever, ever say the c word in real life, it is actually a vile word to utter.

But one of the funniest thread titles I read on here for sheer, gasping with laughter shock value was CUNTING SAINSBURYS

I don't think competitive swearing is partciularly amusing, however I would loathe for this place to be censored.

AnyPhantomFucker · 11/10/2011 10:43

you are just jealous that I will win the Xmas name change comp (again)

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 10:47

but competitive swearing (not to mention nasty ridiculing of the OP) is exactly what happens every time this subject comes up. it's a ship that has sailed, unfortunately. if you look at her OP, it was actually quite reasonable, not asking for HQ censorship AT ALL, just a bit of regard for others, but basically she's been rounded on and now (not surprisingly) just wants to leave. such a shame.

AnyPhantomFucker · 11/10/2011 10:49

I don't think OP has been rounded on

I think there has been the usual banter when this subject comes up

Are you feeling bullied, OP ?

GetOrfMo1Land · 11/10/2011 10:50

I would hope that the OP doesn't think that she has to leave because of this, tbh.

MN has got so many positives, surely they outwiegh a bit of distaste at swearing.

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 11/10/2011 10:52

If, after 5 years, this thread is what makes OP leave then.... well.... by Darth Vader's cupcakes, leave she must!

(Not saying that I want you to leave, OP.....)

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/10/2011 10:53

If ByJingoes has been here for 5 years, then she will (should) be very aware of how these threads go. And it's always the same - nothing new.

I've been here for 5 years as well, and MN has always been like this. I don't know why you seem to think it's got worse, Aitch?

And I really don't think she has been 'rounded upon' - she has been disagreed with, which is very different. If she is choosing to leave, then this is because she has reached the decision that MN is not for her. Which would be a shame, but it's clear that the rest of MN isn't about to change to suit the requirements of one poster.

ByJingoes, I hope that you don't leave - there is plenty more good stuff going on here, regardless of the language.

Hullygully · 11/10/2011 10:53

I can't stand reading right wing tripe on here (or anywhere), so I just let my eyes skim over it. Try that, OP.

IMO, reading, "People on benefits are immigrant scroungers who are bleeding the country dry and should be sent home to Coloured Land" is far far more offensive than a "fuck" or two.

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 10:54

A bit of joking banter is so far from being "rounded on".

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 10:54

if i was her, having posted asking for a bit of courtesy, and people responded like this, i would not be feeling great. actually, i have effectively posted what she posted (more or less) and been responded to in precisely this way and i can tell you from experience that i felt really unhappy about it and yes, while i hesitate to use the term, i did feel bullied.

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 10:55

biwi, it's not one poster. Hmm

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 10:55

well, i wasnt actually thinking of the OP, but just joking with AF. Am the last person to bully anyone on here so it's a shame if it has been misconstrued as such.

Funnily enough I don't actually swear on here hardly ever.
