Who else is fed up with swearing on MN?

I have been trying to have this discussion on another thread, but don't want to hijack it further.

I am thoroughly sick of excessive swearing on MN. I am sick of encountering posters with sweary names (not least because I have to hide MN as soon as the children come into the room).

MNHQ, could you please look at this again? Every time I mention this on threads, I am told that I have a cat's bum face (which is immensely irritating) and to eff off to Nethuns - yet I loathe the huggy/kissy/hunny stuff, and detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored. However, part of being an adult surely means having some consideration for other people too?

Here is Justine in May 2005:

"Hi all,
We've had a few complaints about obscene language on the boards. Our policy on this is that we would appreciate it if people would keep foul and abusive language to a minimum and that if you feel it necessary to swear to make your point then use asterisks please [...] we don't want to be over-prudish about this - we're not talking minor offenses here - and sometimes (parking attendant, gp receptionist annecdotes etc etc) we agree that nothing else but a swear word will do but it's a fair point that lots of members look at mumsnet with kids who may be early readers at their side and as the saying goes... less is more sometimes, so if you could use your discretion it would be much appreciated.

Ta very much."

That seems eminently sensible - but MN seems to have somehow slithered into a site for sweary people only.

Am I the only person who is utterly fed up with it?

A LOT more considerate, by Jove.

I also think we would benefit greatly from a uniform, and if we wore gloves while typing, no?

ClartyScutter · 11/10/2011 10:03

since i'm not meant to be working, i can say whatever i like then?

get fucking in!

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 11/10/2011 10:04

surely if you like so many other aspects of mn, a bit of swearing isnt that bad? would you go into a pub and object to someone swearing in conversation? or would you think "im having a good time, this is an adult environment, never mind"?

and fwiw, I loathe the "injokes/cliquiness" complaints. its just something people say when they have no other argument.

ByJingoes · 11/10/2011 10:04

Confused. Is this another in joke that I am missing?

I did suggest 'the UK's most popular swearanting site' as the MN strapline on another thread. I also suggested 'Sweary parents of the world unite', if I'm not mistaken. I think I should have registered the trademarks. Grin

not every joke is an in-joke Hmm

ByJingoes · 11/10/2011 10:05

Lissie, I think the in jokes and cliquiness are what people resort to when they have nothing constructive to say.

x-posts. In that case, why are gloves funny at all? Confused

Fo0ffyShmooffer · 11/10/2011 10:06

I don't know any in jokes and if I did i wouldn't share them with any of yous

I swear on here about as much as I swear in RL just peppered through the conversation Blush
I think most do and that's how the conversation flows on here. So for the most part it goes unnoticed. I also think most posters can tell when someone is swearing for effect. It's toe curling.

Hullygully · 11/10/2011 10:06

I think you're right ByJingoes.

Mindless cunts.

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 10:10

MUCH worse than the sweariness is, when, on AIBU, someone disagrees with someone else and totally lays into them with nasty words calculated to make them feel like shit

Fixture · 11/10/2011 10:11

Some of it does seem to be self-conscious swearing though. Frilly middle-class people desperately trying to look "hard".

Hullygully · 11/10/2011 10:12

Oh that is just cruel!

TimeWasting · 11/10/2011 10:12

This thread is getting even funnier. Jolly good.

What's wrong with in-jokes?

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 11/10/2011 10:13

Lissie, I think the in jokes and cliquiness are what people resort to when they have nothing constructive to say.

But there are no in jokes on this thread. Nor evidence of cliqueiness. Typically a poster pulls out the "clique" or my fave "mn royalty" card when they are losing an argument/being disagreed with. It smacks "you're all meanies"

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 10:14

is worried that Hully is about to tell us to bend over

TimeWasting · 11/10/2011 10:15

We are all meanies though clearly. We're got horrid potty-mouths for a start.

crazynannawitchbitch · 11/10/2011 10:16

Knock yourself out,gel! Wink

TimeWasting · 11/10/2011 10:18

OP, just because you can't work the joke out doesn't mean it's an in joke.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 11/10/2011 10:19

I could just about care little enough to post that I couldn't care less.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 11/10/2011 10:20

Late to the 'Jesus/Mohammed' development but please indulge me while I contribute:

Allah on a cunting bike, this new coffee is fucking good.

Lady Evil Eyes, where do I sign up for mumsswearnet?

Hungrydragon · 11/10/2011 10:21

Hully

Please stop it. You are turning me on.

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/10/2011 10:25

Anyway, to answer your original question (as the rest of us can continue to debate for ever and ever what we like/don't like about swearing and where and how it should appear), I think it's fairly clear that your views are in the minority, ByJingoes.

ByJingoes · 11/10/2011 10:28

Ok, fair enough. They're certainly in the minority among the people who've noticed this thread and care enough to respond. 'Tis obviously time to move on.
