Let's talk about sex toys (well, ads for them on Mumsnet), please

Hello.

We'd like your opinions, please, on Mumsnet taking ads for stores/sites that sell sex toys.

We accepted a campaign for one site like this earlier in the week - and then removed it after receiving a fair number of complaints.

So, what we need to know now is...

Do you mind ads for stores/sites that sell sex toys - generally speaking?

Does it matter which stores/sites these are? And what kind of stuff they're selling?

And, if you wouldn't run a mile from these kinds of ads, would you be happy to see them all over Mumsnet (with the obvious exception of our more sensitive topics such as Bereavement, Special Needs, Relationships, Miscarriage etc)? Or would you prefer them only to be in Chat?

Do please post and let us know your thoughts.

Thanks MNHQ

Not sex toys per se. Sexist sex accessories.

Actually, Boots sells Durex vibrators, or did last time I was in there. Oh yes it still does

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 16:27

"Sexist sex accessories."

Try saying that three times in quick succession after a glass of wine.

whomovedmychocolate · 07/10/2011 16:28

It's best not to ask for them like that in Boots, even if you have had a few Grin

CristinadellaPizza · 07/10/2011 16:28

They don't sell plastic arseholes wmmc (I'm going to be remembered for that one for ever, so I may as well embrace it. Not the actual plastic arsehole obv)

I'm surprised there aren't more app ads - those I would like to see. I have wasted ££ on rubbish games and it's quite hard to find decent ones. What about ipod accessories? Books? Mooncups? Gardening stuff? Camping equipment? There are hundreds of threads on here asking about all that kind of stuff

whomovedmychocolate · 07/10/2011 16:29

Nah we're all too old to be targeted by Apple. Grin

MardyMwahHaHa · 07/10/2011 16:29

wmmc - I don't think the problem is with the odd vibrator.

It's more to do with the degrading aspect of some of these sites - always showing a woman who is strapped up with the bondage products, never a bloke etc. Many of them sell porn DVDs, which a lot of MNers would object to.

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 16:31

Those durex/dulux products look all right really - very no nonsense, no air of sleaze, and I quite like the fact they are sold in supermarkets (jusy not when my daughter is there sniggering at them).

I think MN could link to stuff like the Durex stuff - that would not offend me one bit. It is the link to what I would see as porn film equipment which I find distasteful. It would offend a lot of people - there are so many people on here who are totally against the porn, and this would seem (to me anyway) I bit near the knuckle.

BrainSurgeon · 07/10/2011 16:31

Good point about apps Cristina (love the name)

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 16:32

I've done my list for Santa

Dear Santa
I would like (in my stocking of course boom boom)

A 3 pronged anal speculum
A plastic arsehole
A doggy mask with adjustable ears
A human hair whip - redhead not blonde
A straitjacket without the odd grey dolly

I will leave out some sherry and a dulux cock ring for you

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 16:40

Plastic arseholes? Really?

I wonder if it comes with plastic hemorrhoid attachments.

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 16:43

I plan to make authentic piles from fimo.

HarrietJones · 07/10/2011 17:05

I like idea of MN brand sex toys.

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 07/10/2011 17:23

there is a lot of rather explicit stuff on MN already so probably have no huge objection within the realms of the more 'tame' sites but and its a big but (no pun intended) it really ought to be time restricted and liked the idea of a sex type thread where the link could go but only with a warning for the faint hearted. REALLY like the idea that MN should look at a retail arm so we could buy stuff direct from them like the mooncup, and even sex toys that are women friendly as well as all the catch phrase stuff on mugs teeshirts etc.

ElderberrySyrup · 07/10/2011 17:24

it would have to sell Mooncups and Nice Ham.

whomovedmychocolate · 07/10/2011 17:25

Mind you, it makes a nice change on Mumsnet to do bonking instead of bonkers Grin

Pentagram · 07/10/2011 17:26

I am trying my hardest to imagine a bondage dog mask - but like this....

Mwahahahahahahahouseface · 07/10/2011 17:31

Not read all of the posts but for me it's a huge no thanks, and I'm with the lovely Hully and others who say these ads are degrading to women.

If I want to go toy shopping, then I'll do it when the DC are in bed, or not around, certainly not via a parenting website.

Also, I don't understand why MNHQ want to be associated with these sorts of sites? LoveHoney have some fantastic products, so I'm told Wink, but why do we need them or others to advertise on here?

Surely this can't be just a money thing can it?

There must be far more appropriate ads out there. Image the flack MN will get for allowing ads like that!

Don't do it.

Mwahahahahahahahouseface · 07/10/2011 17:32

Grin pentagram

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 07/10/2011 17:32

Grin at elderberrysyrup

Mwahahahahahahahouseface · 07/10/2011 17:34

Hully - A DULUX cock ring? Do they make them out of Sheep Dog fur? Grin

Uppity · 07/10/2011 17:40

Stores and brands that reinforce misogyny, are not OK.

But tbh I think if you don't understand why schoolgirl outfits being presented as stuff we should all aspire to and click on after we've posted on the "let girls be girls" campaign threads, is a fucking massive case of cognitive dissonance, then all I can think is that your brain has been CIFed.

OriginalGhoster · 07/10/2011 17:43

This thread will be picked up by the papers

" MUMSnet gets knickers in a twist over SEX TOY dilemma...'" etc, complete with heavily edited salacious quotes...

Helen- Are you sure you're not looking for publicity in all the wrong places?

If this is in The Fail tomorrow I will be disappointed...
