Let's talk about sex toys (well, ads for them on Mumsnet), please

Hello.

We'd like your opinions, please, on Mumsnet taking ads for stores/sites that sell sex toys.

We accepted a campaign for one site like this earlier in the week - and then removed it after receiving a fair number of complaints.

So, what we need to know now is...

Do you mind ads for stores/sites that sell sex toys - generally speaking?

Does it matter which stores/sites these are? And what kind of stuff they're selling?

And, if you wouldn't run a mile from these kinds of ads, would you be happy to see them all over Mumsnet (with the obvious exception of our more sensitive topics such as Bereavement, Special Needs, Relationships, Miscarriage etc)? Or would you prefer them only to be in Chat?

Do please post and let us know your thoughts.

Thanks MNHQ

Actually, not at that price. I'll make my own out of toilet roll and sticky back plastic like the good old days.

Are you getting into character Brain?

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 15:14

dear me

"Urge your lover to push the boundaries with Coco de Mer's virginal white linen blindfold. 'Love Until it Hurts' is painstakingly spelled out in blood red cross stitching. You'll never look back..."

Yuk.

Serioudly have to delete history now.

FontOfAllEvil · 07/10/2011 15:15

Hmmm, started off thinking, who cares? Then I read a lot of the posts and decided I agree with many of them and therfore evidentally I do care, in a no to the ad's kind of way. Although it's more than my job is worth to go clicking on any of the links from this particular computer!

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 15:15

sexy

Oh MNHQ - look what you've started....

you know we love a bit of competitive horror

gazzalw · 07/10/2011 15:15

If it was something like Coco de Mer run by Sam Roddick (run by women primarily for women's pleasure) then surely that would have a place but anything else might be dodgy....

BrainSurgeon · 07/10/2011 15:16

HA ha not really.....as I said I'm not even sure what you're talking about, I can't look at any of this stuff as I'm at work.... I'm just literally PSML at your educational findings (massively helped by my imagination)

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 15:16

haha at competitive horror.

We are like a bunch of errant schoolgirls sometimes Grin

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 15:16

Under their "philosophy" they say:

The Coco de Mer seed germinates from both a male and female plant. Whereas the seed so closely resembles the female form, the male plant has a stamen, which looks strangely like a penis. A huge penis at that, and one that smells of sticky sweet honey.

nom nom

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 15:17

It was very funny when you said howls, brain, beacuse I had just posted a picture of a vixen mask Grin

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 15:17

(Brain - you said "howls" about the dog stuff - geddit?)

notcitrus · 07/10/2011 15:18

I use Adblock so don't see any ads here, but would have no problem with LoveHoney ads on Chat/AIBU/the 'fun' bits of MN.

Yes, I find some of what they sell distasteful, but I can't respect the complaints about nurse's uniforms etc - unless MN should also boycott supermarkets and ELC and all the shops and TV channels which advertise stereotyped dressing-up clothes to children? At least MN's audience is adults.

Also could people please remember that while BDSM or other fetishes may be distasteful to you, the people who practise them and buy speculums/adult nappies/butt plugs etc are real people, including many women, and almost certainly including users of this site. Please could people disagree respectfully rather than dehumanise them.

ooooo sexy doggy synchronicity

swallowedAfly · 07/10/2011 15:18

so the question is do we want sex shops on MN?

do you really need to ask?

NO.

the misogyny, the tackiness, the lack of need, want and the fact that this is a site for mums who funnily enough have kids running around and don't want them looking at sex shop ads over our shoulders etc etc.

what made mnhq think this was apropriate? and who said yes to putting them on the relationships board?

BrainSurgeon · 07/10/2011 15:18

I know, I got it, made me laugh even more how's that for a coincidence

aaaww my sides

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 15:19

Um, no. I can't respect anyone who embraces a buttplug, glass zigzag or similar.

It is quite simply beyond me.

Soz.

FontOfAllEvil · 07/10/2011 15:19

Arf at Dulux sex toys. Do they come in a range of colours?

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 15:21

I respect their right to, but not their choice, iyswim.

Cheeptrickortreat · 07/10/2011 15:21

I have not read the whole thread but my main concern would be that i mumsnet in the day when my children are here and i do not want to have to explain about sex toys to them.

After all its a website for mums and dads, so you need to expect there to be children looking what we are doing.

I already have trouble hiding the tesco ad with the ride on toys from son and as there is no warning what the ad's contain i would have to stop mumsnetting Sad

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 15:22

No, but they do come with an old english sheepdog for your erotic pleasure

piprabbit · 07/10/2011 15:23

But Hully - most glass dildos are pyrex, so freezer and dishwasher proof. Frightfully practical and ideal for stirring a casserole.

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 15:23

That's given me paws for thought

Cheeptrickortreat · 07/10/2011 15:25

If it was just a word ad and no pictures, something like "Lovehoney as shop for adults who love!"

It would be more acceptable.
