I really, really mind about violent thread titles

If I am in a tiny minority I shall just get on with it. Fair enough.

I just wondered if there was enough strength of feeling that perhaps there could be some sort of official discouraging of them?

"I want to smash my hairdressers teeth in"
"I feel like laying into my husband with a heavy metal pipe"
"Would I be unreasonable to kick my childminder in the ovaries?"

I made them up, but they are fairly typical of the sorts of things you see.

I think they damage the whole of Mumsnet. I wince when I see them.

Anyone else?

I don't think you can really do anything about them. It is really just people using an exaggerated description to convey their feelings in a succinct soundbite - I don't think anyone who uses those titles really does want to smash their hairdressers teeth in etc...

Totally agree with you OP. I don't mind swearing, I don't mind so much if they are funny, but more often then not they are just gratuitous expressions of violence.

Unfortunately we are in the minority but that doesn't mean we don't have a point.

We do get quite a lot of mail about violent thread titles, actually.

Well, er, me a bit, unsurprisingly [sheepish], having been the instigator of a thread title change this evening Blush

I think often children are reading over shoulders, we have to take into account that some people object very strongly to the word 'cunt' etc and that whilst I think everyone should be free to speak their minds in a thread, we should all be a bit more circumspect when it comes to thread titles.

fwiw, I dont' object to cunting and fucking, no worries about over-the-shoulder readers here, and I've read all the Harry Potter books. BUT that's not the same for all of us, is it?

I don't really mind. I can hide them, and at least they act as a barometer for who to avoid. Some people are humorous, but some are, well, not very nice.

I agree too. I think it's part of the rising tide of unpleasantness and aggressiveness on here, so any moves to calm it all down even a little get my vote.

I do think from a PC slant that it would be totally unacceptable to start a thread saying "My DW is a cunt, I want to smack her in the gob", where as it is perfectly acceptable to say the same thing about your DH. It's not big and it's not clever whoever is on the receiving end.

Almost all of the one's I've seen have been jokey - as EdStudent describes.

Occasionally you get someone who is properly offensive, but I avoid/report.

I don't agree with the "but my child could read it over my shoulder" argument sinmply as thats the first step on the slippery slope to a swear filter!

Don't particularly like them but think trying to stop them is like any censorship, it's difficult to draw a reasonable line and that line can become very subjective. One person's humour is another person's offence.

I don't like violent thread titles. Obviously I can hide them but I still see them in the first place. Sweary ones don't bother me at all really.

Why not ban the lot as we now can't discuss any book or film regardless of how old it is. People will always find something to moan about.
