I really, really mind about violent thread titles

If I am in a tiny minority I shall just get on with it. Fair enough.

I just wondered if there was enough strength of feeling that perhaps there could be some sort of official discouraging of them?

"I want to smash my hairdressers teeth in"
"I feel like laying into my husband with a heavy metal pipe"
"Would I be unreasonable to kick my childminder in the ovaries?"

I made them up, but they are fairly typical of the sorts of things you see.

I think they damage the whole of Mumsnet. I wince when I see them.

Anyone else?

There have been a few about attacking teachers (around report time Wink) which made me uncomfortable.

BitOfFun · 31/07/2011 21:24

What do you mean, Gwendoline? Have I missed a bunfight?

AnyFucker · 31/07/2011 21:32

I hate all the threads that bash people like teachers, SW's, HV's, NHS workers etc etc but especially those that include violence against people just trying to do their job

the people who start them sound like uneducated, thick, Kyle-esque neanderthals who need to just get a grip

TotalChaos · 31/07/2011 21:33

I agree Allhail.

allhailtheaubergine · 01/08/2011 09:16

Exactly AF.

And when challenged people generally reply when "oh it's obvious the op was only joking" but the thing is, it's not obvious. People really do march up to school with the intention of head butting the teacher.

And yes, as Porto rightly says, the double standards are shameful. We simply would not stand for "AIBU to want to punch my stupid wife's face in when she gets home from work?" and quite rightly, but it is tolerated when it's a woman talking about a man. It shouldn't be.

Thanks for taking an interest HelenMN - would be okay to report unpleasant violent titles? Would MNHQ be prepared to either change them and let the OP know why? Or are we not quite there yet?

You get my vote OP, there are some amusing titles around, but some are just threats of violence, and sexist.
In that people wouldn't accept the same said about a female.

AnansiGirl · 01/08/2011 09:21

Except if it's said about a teacher or a sw. Sad

LoveInAColdChamberOfSecrets · 01/08/2011 09:25

I agree with Aubers as well. I find the violent thread titles really unattractive.

omnishambles · 01/08/2011 09:31

I dont like them either. I dont like it when you glance down active convos and theres a lot of it - it then feels like the prevailing culture is aggressive.

OfflineFor30Years · 01/08/2011 09:41

I agree with the OP; it's the normalisation of casual violence I don't like.

MrsGerardButler · 01/08/2011 09:54

I love a good rant just like anyone, but I don't like seeing swear words in thread titles. Reason being that DD sometimes sits with me when I'm MNing, and while she's not interested enough to read the threads, she likes to read the titles. Grin

Catslikehats · 01/08/2011 09:59

I dislike them but find it a useful way of working out whether the OP is a twat without having to wade through their ill conceived, ill spelt and ill manered post.

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/08/2011 10:01

Sorry - but I agree that there should be some moderation to the titles.

For me , it is a bit like hitting a child because they lashed out at their sibling!! It might be meant in jest, but it just isn't funny or clever ....

I complained about that thread, BeerTricks - was emailed usual MN party line about free speech, understanding why I was offended, etc. Didn't trust myself to post on it, tbh.

Excellent point, well made, Queenofdenial Grin

I agree with the OP.

I particularly dislike thread titles where the violence is directed at children.

And I find repugnant the many, many thread titles - especially in Teenagers - where children are called 'vile' and worse.

LoveBeingAtHomeOnMyOwn · 01/08/2011 13:02

Agree with all of the above.

AchtungBaby · 01/08/2011 13:03

I agree, it just seems unneccessary (sp? Confused).

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/08/2011 13:21

I sort of agree but I also totally agree with what timidviper said upthread. It is censorship and how do you draw a line. Several have already said that comic violence is ok - but how do we define that. Lots of people find the f and c words offensive, should mn install a swear filter? I think things should stay as they are or we will be on the slippery slope to nm style moderation [shudder] as has already been mentioned a swift use of the hide button solves the problem.
