I really, really mind about violent thread titles

If I am in a tiny minority I shall just get on with it. Fair enough.

I just wondered if there was enough strength of feeling that perhaps there could be some sort of official discouraging of them?

"I want to smash my hairdressers teeth in"
"I feel like laying into my husband with a heavy metal pipe"
"Would I be unreasonable to kick my childminder in the ovaries?"

I made them up, but they are fairly typical of the sorts of things you see.

I think they damage the whole of Mumsnet. I wince when I see them.

Anyone else?

Also agree with above...

AchtungBaby · 01/08/2011 13:30

Actually, I agree specifically with BeerTricksPotter.

BitOfFun · 01/08/2011 13:39

Lenin, is it time to revisit the Hide Poster debate? Are MNHQ able to be persuaded?

Ah, I shall have a look.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 01/08/2011 13:49

Totally agree and am also hating the amount of swearing in titles, when did that cease to be a no-no?

EggyAllenPoe · 01/08/2011 13:53

like that idea beer - i don't like censorship though.

i don't like that sort of thread title either.

liberal quandary

bushymcbush · 01/08/2011 13:56

I don't like violent thread titles. I don't like hearing anyone say casually "Oh I just wanted to punch his lights out" etc.

I agree that cartoony ones are more acceptable but I don't get "kicking in the ovaries" as cartoony - very nasty IMO.

Beer, love that 'Huge Lottery Win' and 'World Peace' are listed in that order - you selfless martyr, you Grin

JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/08/2011 14:02

I've noticed a lot of these recently as well, I'm not offended as such but it's totally unnecessary IMO.

DuelingFanjo · 01/08/2011 14:02

yes, I hate it. Primarily as it gives the twats on anti mumsnet groups the ammo to have a go about how we all want to smash our husband's faces in. It's not nice.

Good thing you didn't put that in a thread title, beer, it might have been seen as threatening Grin

walkersmum · 01/08/2011 14:06

I hate the violent titles and the swearing

saidthespiderwithahorridsmile · 01/08/2011 14:07

I find it interesting that people have strong feelings about this

I don't register any kind of reaction at all - it just doesn't bother me

I am very wussy about actual violence in films etc too Confused

I don't like titles where the OP calls a small child a "little bitch" etc though - those ones do make me flinch

horses for courses I suppose

can't see censorship as a good thing though - we're all adults

Catslikehats · 01/08/2011 14:42

Maybe the solution is that more people should call the OP on it? I often do - particularly if the person "threatened" is a child/young person. Sometimes the response is that I am a humourless harridan sometimes marginally more positive.

I am anti censorship generally but feel the "not commenting is as good as accepting" argument applies well here. If we don't like it, lets make our feelings clear.

EduStudent · 01/08/2011 15:01

Agree that it should be more reactive to individual threads, rather than a blanket policy. It's such an arbitrary line between humour/offensive that I think each one should be judged in it's own context.

But definitely keep the swearing Grin

Marshmallowflump · 01/08/2011 15:50

I guess they are just looking to draw attention to themselves and give a reaction , solution ignore and HIDE it , then we can all have a peaceful life, and yea i dont like them either but would not want to give them any more rope to hang themselves with if you get my point!

RebeccaMumsnet · 01/08/2011 16:19

Hi All,

Thank you for your comments.

We will have a read through the thread and a chat in the office and see what we can come up with. Until then, please do report any thread titles that you feel are beyond the pale and we will take a look.

Grin
