Cuppa or Hot Beverage?

HelenMumsnet · 11/02/2011 11:43

Hello. The result of our cup of tea emoticon poll show a clear win for the cuppa fans.

So.... all that remains is to decide what text we all type in to make our cup of tea emoticon appear.

Would you like [cuppa] ?

Or the rather less liquid-specific/more amusing but longer-to-type [hot beverage] ?

Do let us know...

[cuppa] is surely going to get a pouncing on from the "properUseofEnglish" nazis....

Brew is great but as a Southerner up north it sounds like a very northern expression.

[tea] seems to be a good alternative for reasons nicky2times suggests.

Eleison · 11/02/2011 12:57

lolol at all the threads about this.Grin

Storm in a [Hot Bev]?

Geocentric · 11/02/2011 13:01

I still think it should be [t].
Then it also stands for "time out", which after all is what a [hot beverage] is all about, right?

RamonaFlowers · 11/02/2011 13:01

Not Brew. Not ever Brew.

Grin
systemsaddict · 11/02/2011 13:03

You see, now I'm getting swayed by the temptation of being able to call someone a [mug]. Think it would get over-used in Relationships though.

taintedpaint · 11/02/2011 13:06

I like [cuppa]. Not keen on Brew.

Although [mug] is rather appealing for the reasons already given! Grin

hmmSleep · 11/02/2011 13:19

I don't like hot drinks, or wine, but doubt the [nice cold glass of summer fruits cordial] emoticon would catch on really, so I'll opt for Brew.

stealthsquiggle · 11/02/2011 13:23

[mug]

emoticons should have to work for a living - so multiple uses are an advantage, not a disadvantage

NormanTheForeman · 11/02/2011 13:25

I do think [mug] sounds quite cosy and comforting. And would encompass all hot beverages.

NormanTheForeman · 11/02/2011 13:26

And I could blame myself if people started calling me a [mug] Grin

nenevomito · 11/02/2011 13:28

But Brew is lovely.

Does tha want a brew?

stealthsquiggle · 11/02/2011 13:32

MNHQ are you really stuck with a cup and saucer emoticon? Could you not get tech's crayons back out pop back to emoticons'r'us and swap it for a mug?

MrsTicklemouse · 11/02/2011 13:34

What Systems said....

I think you have to think of the syntax here. People are going to type, 'here, have a [...]', aren't they? The way they type, 'here, have a ' or 'here, have some '. So, it needs to fit in with that. You wouldn't say 'here, have a [mug]', would you? You would say 'have a Brew', or 'have a [cuppa]'. (And no one would say 'have a [hot beverage]'.)

Must say I was expecting a mug, not that I would call anyone a mug Wink :o

NormanTheForeman · 11/02/2011 13:36

Am actually surprised, considering I was the one who campaigned for this, that MNHQ thought a posh cup and saucer appropriate. I mean, builders usually use mugs...

Perhaps this means they think I'm posher than I am! Well, I suppose I do wear a tie.... Grin

TheNewStig · 11/02/2011 13:45

Well Norman you could always pop over to the camper van and borrow their saucers from the dining set to "posh up" your building site!

Personally me thinks this is all just a delaying tactic to the launch of the [mug]

NormanTheForeman · 11/02/2011 13:46

I thought those "saucers" were plates, NewStig! Shock

Must say I'm looking forward to actually seeing this emoticon.....

GeeWhizz · 11/02/2011 13:57

[Brew] but a mug emoticon and not cup and saucer.

(slurps from mug)

NormanTheForeman · 11/02/2011 14:01

Glad I'm not the only one who slurps....

Do you also go aaaaaahhhhhhh....... afterwards?

TheNewStig · 11/02/2011 14:14

Well if needs must norman you'll have to use a plate!

aaaaahhhhh - absolutely :)

asdx2 · 11/02/2011 14:14

Brew for me too Smile

EldritchCleavage · 11/02/2011 14:14

Norman, my DS (23 months) does, after his father put him up to it. He has milk, of course, not tea. But drinks it in a very stereotype 70s man type fashion.

GlynistheGimmer · 11/02/2011 14:16

a vote for [cuppa] from me

but then again i'm a ponce and like cup and saucer for tea/coffee and also a bit of a food nazi and refuse to call instant coffee a Brew

Grin
DrNortherner · 11/02/2011 14:16

Another vote for Brew

MmeLindt · 11/02/2011 14:40

Rather bemused at all the threads about this. Just goes to prove that MNetters will discuss anything to avoid doing housework.

I vote for [tea] or Brew, for the syntax reason.

Can you not make [tea] and [coffee] both default to the cup and saucer emoticon thus pleasing everyone except the hot choc and bovril section?
