Howdy lovely MN's

We are after a new mattress - medium firm. Just getting royally fed up with them sagging within a few months, never to bounce back and leaving us to sleep on a horribly lumpy mattress. It's not even that we are that heavy! Don't mind if have to rotate, tip them over, whatever, just something that lasts.

We used to buy mattresses from a company in Yorkshire, called Beauty Sleep but they seem to have gone downhill and the last one lasted 3 months, rather than the normal 10 years. So we are hoping you guys have some tried and tested mattresses that have lasted and can share which type please?

Only thing not keen on is Tempur as we've not heard a good thing from friends who spent out, spending a grand or more just to throw them away because uncomfortable.

Cheers loads!

Im looking for recs too. We've currently got an Emma mattress but it's not lasted, its dipped each side with a firm area going down the middle 🙄

We have a ViSpring pocket sprung mattress, which they exchanged for no charge after I decided I wanted a different tension. 15 years down the line I suppose we should replace, but it still feels in excellent condition.

We love our Tempur mattress! Had it about a year now with no issues

Hiddenhouse · 17/10/2026 13:15

My tempur mattress is amazing, I’m four years in and if could afford more I would get them for all our other beds too. Everyone says it’s the most comfy bed ever!

TallagallaPenguin · 17/10/2026 13:33

We’ve had good ones from furniture village - ours is really old but can’t remember its name, it has a part memory foam bit on the top but is mostly different underneath.
Got a “GELTOUCH 3000 “ for DC’s bed, it has quite a bouffy squashy gel layer on the top which he likes. I’d prefer a bit firmer. But I would recommend trying them in person at furniture village as we’ve only had good ones from there. They cost a bomb though.

Girlintheframe · 17/10/2026 13:37

We have Emma, had it about 5 years now and it’s as good a new. Liked it so much we bought one for our sons room too.

We've had two ViSpring mattresses and both have sagged and given me a terrible bad back. The first one lasted about six years I suppose, the second a lot less. I need a soft and it's honestly not worth the money. I can't comment on the medium firm. My kids both have Silent Night and they love them.

CrystalSingerFan · 17/10/2026 14:12

I personally don't like Tempur mattresses (or toppings) and would never buy one.

My current mattress is a John Lewis (firm) and has been excellent for 8 years. My partner and I lay on a lot of John Lewis beds before buying. Not cheap.

Thanks everyone! x

I hate my Tempur mattress with a passion - it was a very expensive mistake. I wanted a really soft mattress and the display mattress in the shop felt really comfortable. But Ive not had a good night’s sleep since the day the mattress arrived. It’s much firmer than the shop display, really exacerbated my back problem, and after two years began to sag in the middle. I got caught up in the hype about these mattresses but would never ever consider buying another. Unfortunately as it was so expensive, I can’t afford to replace it but have made it a bit more bearable with a deep mattress topper.

managingexpectations · 17/10/2026 16:29

I can’t see passed Ikea. DP even changed his mattress after sleeping at mine.
I gad previously bought a very expensive silent night one that only held up for 2 years before sagging. I left that one with EXH and due to budget got the Ikea ones and I have to say I’m impressed. I’m fat and 6years on there’s no sagging to springs poking through. They’re pretty low maintenance and just need rotated every now and then and then plus they’re not ridiculously expensive

Did you not return it after the 100 night trail?

RedRosie · 17/10/2026 16:41

We like a proper sprung mattress, and used John Lewis as you can try all sorts of options. Good ones are expensive though. We got a British-made pocket-sprung mattress about 9 years ago, and are still very happy with it. Before that we had a top of the range Tempur one, which we absolutely hated but had to sleep on for a couple of years as it had been so expensive. Never again.

Banjas · 17/10/2026 16:45

Whatever one you buy make sure you can flip it over and not just rotate it.
That means you get longer out of the mattress. Twice as long.
In the past few years, very conveniently and profitably for themselves, mattress manufacturers decided that the vast majority of mattresses are no longer flippable thus saving manufacturing costs for them and reducing the length of time before another mattress is needed to be purchased because of sagging.
A win win.
For mattress manufacturers. 😢

Can you remember which one you bought?

IKEA.
You can go and test them but we got a medium firm and 5 years on it's still fab 👍

Are they standard sizes? Back in the day Ikea were slightly different sizes on their bedding things. Cheers tho, sounds like a plan!

Warren Evans. Got a pocket sprung mattress from there … oh my god seventeen years ago I think! It’s still good

EBearhug · 17/10/2026 17:46

John Lewis, sprung, natural fibres, British made. Not cheap, but about a decade old and still good.

You aim to spend a third of each day in bed. Poor sleep wrecks lives. A good mattress is worth investing in.

Do you have preferences over things like sprung, foam, natural fibres, etc? That might help narrow down the options.

I’ve had Emma previously and sent 2 back for sagging! They were awful

spanishcheese · 17/10/2026 18:35

I think how comfortable a mattress is depends partly on the size and weight of the person sleeping on it as well as any back, joint or sleeping issues you may have. So I wouldn't take a recommendation from someone who doesn't know anything about you.

My husband and I have slept on our current mattress for over 20 years and desperately need a new one. Our intention is to go to a reputable department store with a decent bedding department and try the various mattresses and also take time to talk to the sales people about the pros and cons and make up of each mattress for the type of body size and sleeper you are.

It's less comfort per se, more longevity. I think there has been a decline on quality of goods tbh. Having bought a couple of mattresses, different well-known brands after our old fav brand was proven to have got bad - they've given up after just a few short months. Saggy, lumpy and no, nothing major on bodyweight. I think the same happens with sofas now, they sag quickly, things are just not made that well.

I was just after something that people had found that lasted reasonably well, ie, well made and no, don't mind splashing out if it lasts. I hate wasting money and I hate having to drag them down the stairs then take rubbish mattresses to the skip! 😁
