Howdy lovely MN's

We are after a new mattress - medium firm. Just getting royally fed up with them sagging within a few months, never to bounce back and leaving us to sleep on a horribly lumpy mattress. It's not even that we are that heavy! Don't mind if have to rotate, tip them over, whatever, just something that lasts.

We used to buy mattresses from a company in Yorkshire, called Beauty Sleep but they seem to have gone downhill and the last one lasted 3 months, rather than the normal 10 years. So we are hoping you guys have some tried and tested mattresses that have lasted and can share which type please?

Only thing not keen on is Tempur as we've not heard a good thing from friends who spent out, spending a grand or more just to throw them away because uncomfortable.

Cheers loads!

John Lewis also delivered new mattress to my bedroom, and took the old one away for a small extra charge, which was well worth it!

Harry Benmore. Amazing

SwankyPants · 17/10/2026 23:48

I've tried the analysis thing in Dreams but it was totally not me. And its hard to find a place that has a good variety to test out

John Lewis Natural Collection (made by Harrison Spinks). Have had two now and they are great.

Most people don't need a firm mattress. JL ones feel soft but are supportive. The more springs the better (and more expensive!).

Bigpinkslippers · 17/10/2026 23:58

Hypnos pillowtop 6 years in and still great

Olderbutt · Yesterday 00:01

We've just had a new one. Harrison Spinks, handmade in Yorkshire. We ordered a king size one side medium, one side firm. Over the moon with it. Not cheap but worth every penny.

I have an antique French tester bed. It’s just a shade smaller than a double.
It came with a custom cut mattress that was actually a solid block of firm foam, covered in cotton lining.
Still very hard foam, no sagging after 40 years (I’m hoping/ assuming germs don’t live that long in plastic).

We bought a 'Hotel Quality Dorchester Pocket Sprung Mattress' from eBay - a seller called Beds101 - just over a year ago for our big-built teen DS. It was 'suspiciously' cheap, yet we trusted the reviews and we're absolutely delighted.

We got the lowest spring count (cheapest of all) and they really are top quality products. Next time we need a mattress for our bed, we won't bother looking anywhere else.

Mancity08 · Yesterday 00:09

we gave a Harrison spinks pocket sprung king size. Absolutely luv sleeping in it.
make sure you get a sprung edge divan to go with it as otherwise if you have a platform base divan it won’t give it the spring/bounce feel
it will feel hard .
think we paid £1200 for mattress - 5 yrs ago

Otty, and get the pillows too.

I bought a new mattress in January and it’s the best mattress I have ever, ever slept on! I now struggle if I have to sleep on other beds!

I can’t get on with memory foam and like a firm mattress usually as I’m hypermobile and a tummy sleeper. I’d thought I’d try an extra firm one. I was a bit worried when I unpacked it as it was rock hard but OMG, it is like sleeping on air.

My back never hurts, I can lie on my front, side and back without any back or neck pain and I cannot feel my partner shifting around in his sleep.

it wasn’t even an expensive mattress. it was an Arthur Rock Hard or something like that and was under £300 for a Kind Size.

I honestly can’t get over its awesomeness.
i also use Dunlopillo latex pillow - perfect for me.

i suppose it depends on your body needs and sleep position. I will never go back to a softer mattress.

I find the thought of replacing a mattress incredibly scary!
We are still sleeping on the one my husband bought before we were married. The mattress itself is fine but the bed frame itself could do with replacing so we're looking into buying both.

We like our current one, so the thought of paying silly amounts of money for a new one that might not be as comfy is really worrying.
I also find it concerning how short a life modern ones seem to have. (I won't say how old ours is but it's in the decades, not years. . ).

I'm not convinced that a lot of them do necessarily have a short life in reality - the traditional-style ones, at least; I think marketing has a great deal to play in it, as companies that sell mattresses would obviously much prefer you to buy 12 of them in your lifetime rather than just 3!

For a very long time, mattresses lasted as long as they lasted - and you would eventually look to replace them once they had worn out, regardless of their age. Then came the cautions about how they could be bad for your health based solely on their age. The age at which you 'should' replace a mattress started gradually coming down and thus, in people's minds, that age became a maximum, and so they would start lowering it further in their own minds.

It's a bit like the tricks that main dealer car garages often pull, based on instilling concern and even fear in your mind to make you spend more with them. If a tyre has worn a little bit, and is now down to 97% of its original tread, it's perfectly fine and should last well for many more years (absent a puncture, accident or similar)... but when the dealership tell you in earnest that 'it's less safe now, and a new one would be safer', they're not technically wrong, whatever tiny margins are involved.

I have a latex one from latex sense. It's getting on for 11yrs old but it's almost as good as the day I got it.

I can’t see passed Ikea. DP even changed his mattress after sleeping at mine.
I gad previously bought a very expensive silent night one that only held up for 2 years before sagging. I left that one with EXH and due to budget got the Ikea ones and I have to say I’m impressed. I’m fat and 6years on there’s no sagging to springs poking through. They’re pretty low maintenance and just need rotated every now and then and then plus they’re not ridiculously expensive

Another vote for Ikea! Have their mattresses on every bed in our house and I recommend them to everyone!

Our Tempur mattress is the best thing we ever bought. 8 years in and it’s still as comfortable as the day we bought it. It cost £2800 for a superking, but I would spend that again in a heartbeat. Maybe don’t let one person’s experience cloud your judgement and give one a try.

Millbrook wool ortho mattress from Mattressonline. Bliss from day one, best mattress ever slept on.

Squirrel437 · Yesterday 22:15

Harrison gets my vote too. Just tried a new bronze ortho mattress only in the shop to go on my existing Harrison base.

Glad you got on with it! Sadly not just one friends experience, 3. All of them got rid. I don't think I will convince my partner it's a good idea because of it though. But thankyou!

We bought a Highgrove sprung mattress about a year ago and it is the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on.

I also like that Highgrove is a British company making their mattresses in a factory in Yorkshire.

In my '80s childhood home, my bed had a horsehair mattress that had been reconditioned in the war. I'm not sure longevity is always a great thing...

clamshell24 · Today 06:20

I like natural products, no memory foam, & have warren evans ones everywhere. Last kingsize lasted 20 years.

Words · Today 07:15

Hypnos. They are fantastic, but pricey. I recently bought one with an integrated topper after having their other ranges and the jury is still out on that…they last many, many years. I was told by my local i dependent retailer that they no longer stock vispring as they don’t think they are worth the premium price tag.

I have the Silentnight Memory 2000 Pocket Pillowtop Mattress - Medium Firm from JD Williams a double is £479. Solo sleeper but I find the firmness is just right. I did have a Silentnight orthopaedic firm mattress but getting older, it was too firm!
