Luxury and timeless items that bring you joy

What luxury or good quality items have you received or bought for yourself that you think stand the test of time and bring you joy?

Big birthday coming up so I plan to drop heavy hints to DH and also treat myself over the course of the year.

These can be wearable items or home goods and gadgets. They can be expensive (up to low thousands) or much less.

They can be items that finally made you feel like a grown up but that bring you a rush of wonder when you use them.

I’m after quality or beauty or practicality rather than anything super fashionable.

Sadly budget won’t stretch to car or holiday home! And I don’t have the capacity for more pets. I’m good at coming up with experiences gifts so it’s just cold, hard, material goods I’m after!

Handmade rug from Usbekistan. I'm sitting on it right now.
It took two ladies six months to make. Price to match, but😍

I love the sound of this. How did you buy it? Would love to see Uzbekistan. The tiles and architecture look incredible.

I love my Georg Jensen jewellery, suede coach bag, wool and silk rug bought in India,

I would love some Margo Selby towels and a tana lawn Liberty dressing gown.

Cartier watch and Mulberry handbags. I wear/use them pretty much every day and have done for years. I’d rather invest in pieces that will last and will give me joy each time I pick them up, than get a load of cheaper bits I fall out of love with.

I have a lovely selection of mulberry bags bought for me by my gorgeous husband and thought I was done and had all I wanted, then he bought me a Bayswater mini tote for my birthday a few weeks ago and it’s bloody lush. Turns out I did indeed need another one 😝

I love this thread - so many great ideas for things

Since I’ve posted I thought of a couple more - btw still wanting a great ring or tennis bracelet … I wouldn’t be saying no if my DH bought me those

anyhow..

my Pelegrims soap - love it everywhere

great soap bars - I do like sone of the Kew Gardens ones and Nesti Dante and a lovely fig one

a bright red leather handbag / something about the redness of it

a Danielle Draper green quartz ring

Lisa Eldridge refillable lipstick

someone mentioned Alessi - I have the apostrophe orange peeler thing - small not expensive and is lovely, something about the weight in your hand

pigeon post notelets

I now want a Pelegrim subscription box! Oh no! And I like the Draper rings too - green quartz is lush!

If you like gardening invest in some Felco secateurs and Sneeboer tools I have lots of them and they are just beautiful to use. Currently debating a Haws galvanised watering can and brass mister.

Cherries in the snow!

I’m enjoying this thread for 50th birthday ideas. I’ve always admired B&B clocks so may well put one on my list. No.1 spot has been a Cartier tank for the past decade but I very rarely wear my Raymond Weil (that I got at 21) so really no point at all getting another watch. I really love the MaxMara Pasticcino bags but I’m biding my time for the perfect size and colour combo.

Yes! I love Cherries in the snow, it's a gorgeous shade. ☺️

Two Viking necklaces handmade in Shetland, items I’ve wanted forever but could only buy when I received two inheritances.

Both silver, one is a Viking Longship, and the other is Sleipnir, the eight legged horse of Odin.

The other thing I have is a silver wishbone ring, with Celtic engraving on it.

I love the 100% wool blankets I got as a gift -- always feel very luxurious. We got ourselves an all natural woolroom mattress this year which is a real treat as our previous one was a decade old and rubbish. I also got myself a nice leather handbag and wallet this year, not at all expensive, less than £60 for the handbag, but to me they are a luxury that makes me feel like a grownup; my previous ones I'd had since university and they were falling apart. I like to ask for homewares from objects of use as gifts, because it's nice to think you're getting something that will last a lifetime, instead of tat you'll have to quickly replace.

It’s already been mentioned but a Cartier watch - I bought one for myself over 15 years ago before I was married or had kids and when i probably had the most personal disposable income, and it brings me pleasure every time I wear it - I have never regretted the spend for a second. I then did buy a 2nd one for myself for my 50th… and I would like to get a third so that I have one to hand on to each of my children.

How lovely. Which ones have you bought? X

My original is a gold-plated Tank Solo, and my newer one is a Pasha with a dark blue face as I wanted a metal bracelet one.

I got a big bonus after a year from hell. Treated myself to an Omega watch, coach Tabby bag and a bottle of Byredo perfume
cherish all of them

LettuceAndCarrots · 30/04/2026 22:45

Robert Welch knives, toilet brush, cooking pots.... I love all their stuff and get pleasure from the quality every day.

Bimblesalong · 30/04/2026 23:03

I have a big birthday coming after kicking cancer in the arse. I’m hoping to be bought/ buy myself a Cartier watch. I’m between the lovely tank on p1 or a diamond and steel Panthere.

otherwise, I adore a Hermes silk scarf.

Something that’s given me huge pleasure is the terracotta pomegranate pomander from Santa Maria novella. It scents the whole downstairs of the house.

Wellretired · 30/04/2026 23:46

Beautiful silk scarf squares, 90cm. I have soMe and want more. Hermes are the classic but thrre are others. My silk "Persian" rugs, I bought them years ago and never regretted it for a second.

Any links? I’m not a big watch wearer… But art and jewellery and rugs sound great.

Look at Cartier Rolex Tudor Omega . Think what type of straps you like . Leather metal gold silver platinum white gold . Go to a shop try lots on . You can also get reconditioned ones. My husband got a shop to order in a load for me to try. I think it was In The royal exchange London. Also a stroll down Hatton garden is fun just browsing.
I like vintage stuff. As long as it always has papers.

a nice ring
a nice Asprey and Garard bracelet
etc

south sea pearls.

A simple luxury.....

A really good white shirt and a Tom Ford lipstick.

Wearing this today and since the Sun's out some Tom Ford sunglasses.

Flamingoqueenofchaos · 01/05/2026 18:42

Rolex watch (brought pre loved) from an inheritance
LV handbag and purse I brought for my 30th - I’m 52 now and have been using the purse everyday since! Handbag was used solid for 15yrs then only occasionally as too small for all the crap I carry about now!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/05/2026 18:52

@TraveltartHermes scarves. Buy used from a reputable source for better value.

chezzabee80 · 02/05/2026 02:23

I got this omega watch last month, it was a lovely shopping experience and I feel with the mix of metal and neutral colours I can wear with gold or silver rings so feel I'll get a lot of wear out of it.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 02/05/2026 06:53

@chezzabee80 I have an Omega Constellation with a deep blue face and diamonds for “numbers”. They are very wearable! I agree.

Barney16 · 02/05/2026 07:17

When I was richer than I am right now I bought a Prada coat. It's absolutely beautiful and I wear it all the time in the winter.

Salsa2026 · 02/05/2026 20:07

Gold hoop earrings
Good quality, lined, fitted dresses in various colours
Good jeans

SophysWatch · 02/05/2026 22:46

Such a lovely thread, I've been nodding away reading people's posts 🙂

I have practical stuff like a KitchenAid stand mixer and Dualit toaster but I suppose I've had them so long I've stopped seeing them as luxuries (the fact that they go on and on and on makes them worth every penny though.) I do have the KitchenAid tea kettle which is no longer made, it's such a thing of beauty I do admit to gazing lovingly at it at times 😀

Yes yes to fountain pens - so nice to see so many mentions of them on here - but please no Mont Blanc, any serious fountain pen collector will tell you they are made of cheap plastic and have very poor nibbage. The perfect example of marketing over quality. Head to Pelikan, Onoto Conway Stewart or Visconti if you want a genuinely sublime writing experience.

Totally agree with other stationery luxuries - I have a dark brown leather Smythson writing folio and it just smells of luxury

@Serenity45 I'm so thrilled that Decleor has come back!

Watches - I have a 1978 Rolex Oyster Quartz and a 1965 Rolex 18ct gold cocktail watch (the Mrs works in luxury watches and I've learned so much from her.) As others have observed you just feel knockout wearing a good watch.

I have some Chanel scarves but they don't get anywhere near as much of a look-in as they should. Not a fan of Hermes so that saves me a pretty penny 😀

@Auroragirl I too love south sea pearls - what do you have? I only have white, gold and Tahitian stud earrings and a Tahitian necklace. I'd love a full strand of goldens.

I love to carry history/luxury with me if that makes sense, so I have two 2.55s and I love the fact that they are identical to Chanel's design of Feb 1955 (other than the addition of the word 'Chanel' on the clasp, thank you Karl Lagerfeld 😀) Similarly I have a collection of iconic perfumes and like to think of the year/era that they were launched/popular in, so when I smell L'Heure Bleu I think that's what 1912 smelled like, with Mitsouko I know what 1919 smelled like, 1925 Shalimar, 1933 Vol de Nuit etc. It transports me to the luxury of a previous time.

I know you said you're ok for experiences @Traveltart but if you don't do this regularly might I suggest classical concerts in the best places you can find, I always get to The Proms and the day after my 50th saw the Paris String Quartet play in the Madeleine. It was utterly wonderful and I'll never forget it.

SophysWatch · 02/05/2026 23:01

Oh & yes Dyson hairdryer somebody mentioned! They’ve just brought out a travel version which adjusts to any voltage & I am so very tempted…
