Where to get a cheap, Ok double mattress...no Ikea anywhere near us!

Ds1 has been ill this week, twice all over the bed and the 'waterproof' thing wasn't on, not that it is much use anyway.

it is a 1970s mattress that came with our rather nice antique bed, and I kept as it was cleanish and I was going to give birth on it anyway.

I have two kids in bed with me and don't see that changing rapidly, so there are going to be further incidents over the next few years no doubt - not really worth getting a fabbo mattress, and I have less than no money.

I am looking therefore for something acceptable and cheap but not nasty, if you see what I mean - backache wouldn't do anyone any good!

suggestions gratefully received x

Argos, and they may deliver. Or one of those out of town places like Allied that sells beds too.

NadineHumbug · 08/12/2007 15:38

how cheap? have a look on MFI website. If you order a Slumberdown one you get a free duvet

SofiaAmes · 08/12/2007 15:38

You can find a used one on gumtree. If you are careful how you select one (ask questions about household it comes from), you can get a perfectly good one for very little money.

I meant Silentnight!

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 08/12/2007 15:43

Thankyou girls, I like the slumberdown one but am probably looking at most at 150...pref on credit so Argos is a good plan!

I don't think we have a Gumtree here - freecycle yes, never seen gumtree around. But will check in case.

If you can wait until after Christmas you might get an actual bargain in the sales.

Alternatively this one looks OK and would be £171 delivered - they can deliver very fast if it's in stock, rather than Argos's up to 35 days...

Prob no credit though.

Have you tried a Want ad on freecycle?

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 08/12/2007 15:57

Thankyou Wendy, that looks nice actually! We have a Dreams nearby I think... Sales is a much better idea though! Have been sleeping on sofa but might brave the bed of doom with a few layers on top of the 'bit' (eww!) if it means getting a bargainous new mattress after Xmas!

Brill idea

...might try freecycle too, gave away a nice king size a few months ago so perhaps karma and all that!!

NAB3littlemonkeys · 08/12/2007 16:21

Hubby now saying he doesn't think it will be okay as it has been folded in half for 5 years. ????????

NAB3littlemonkeys · 08/12/2007 16:22

Would you be interested enough for us to get it down and sit on it for a while?

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 08/12/2007 16:24

..I would but please don't put your backs out! I am pretty limited moneywise too so would need to know how much you wanted, roughly, is that Ok?

Hubby is not behaving. Thinks it will take a week for it to become flat again and soesn't think it would go back to original shape.

He is an accountant - let's talk money! Might focus his mind!!!!

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 08/12/2007 16:29

Aw don't worry Nab. I really don't mind if it's a no go, honestly! Thankyou for trying though, I really appreciate the thought xx
