Homeopathic treatment for reflux

babynotburp · 02/01/2015 10:06

My 15 week old has pretty bad reflux. He is growing well and reaching all his milestones but I'd love to be able to help him.

The doctor suggested infant gaviscon but I wasn't keen due to the constipation.

Someone said you can get a homeopathic remedy from boots which works well.

I can't remember the name of it. I think it started with a c.

Has anyone tried this and had any success. Was it also easy to administer?

Thanks xConfused

and you havent said what terribke things homeopathy actually did to your family

FayeFruitLoop · 02/01/2015 14:58

Yes but reflux is pretty obvious. You can't exactly miss it or kid yourself if it isn't improving... So I don't think that's a terrible worry here anyhow

Trinpy · 02/01/2015 14:58

OP (if you're still reading) - my ds had reflux and I used infant gaviscon to start with. I was worried about constipation too but I started off with a tiny amount (one sachet in one feed) and slowly built up until the problem was sorted rather than going straight in with the max dose. The difference it made was unbelievable and I really regret not using it sooner.

Wrt what your GP said, reflux is common in babies but treatment is usually only recommended if the baby is distressed by it or not gaining enough weight. I think your GP probably meant that, as the parent, you know whether your baby is in pain and needs treatment.

Infant gaviscon is so gentle, it is really just a thickener, but it can.be very effective.

I'm afraid I can't comment on the homeopathic stuff as I don't know much about it. I once volunteered to be a case study for a homeopathic class. Got home with a little pill to take when it suddenly occurred to me that I had no idea what I was supposed to be taking the pill for Confused. Put me off it a bit!

my family have used it with NO terrible descent into the occult at all!

house, i dont think you get the difference between someone using the odd homeopathic remedy and finding it useful, and someone joining some mad cult about it.

I think a lot of practitioners of alt stuff can go a bit obsessive about it, but it sounds like its your mums personality more than anyhthing. this is not representative of homeopathy worldwide. Just like people who wantbyo prCtice a bit of yoga or mindfulness arent necessarily going to give up all worldly possessions and meditate on a mountain on tibet for the rest of their lives

Strange as the homeopath I saw was the one who eventually helped me make up my mind to vaccinate my child when I was unsure (and at the time hoping he could give me a homeopathic version of vaccines) he explained why he couldn't give me homeopathic "vaccines" and a decent chat with someone who listened and didn't make me feel like an idiot for concerns and I came round to the idea...

He happily treated my child alongside for any reactions to vaccines however, and seemed to work apart from whatever it was we had for the men B jab.

But perhaps people have moved on since your mother was a homeopath?

house, im sorry that happened. I know someone who rejects all stuff like that too - vaccines and antibiotics etc and i have been worried for her children but its still not a general risk from homeopathy. Im sure it has its fair share of charlatans especially in this country where people cant even have a sensible discussion on it without being mocked.

Branleuse · 02/01/2015 15:09

my homeopath worked alongside conventional medicine too, andvthought we were blessed to be able to access it.
didnt ask her opinion on vaxxing

I think this is where balance needs to be drawn...

If my child has a minor ailment like a cough - I may use homeopathy

If it continues and appears to be turning into a chest infection - il get a 2nd opinion from my dr and use prescribed allopathic medicine if all natural methods have failed by this point

If my child has potential meningitis symptoms - I go straight to a & e and homeopathy wouldn't cross my mind.

I think most mothers are able to judge the seriousness and urgency of medical treatment when appropriate.

But I am really sorry, you suffered as yours did not.

Homeopathy will very probably make the OP feel better, so she should do it if she wants.

It won't make the baby feel better though, so if he is suffering please try some medication for him.

HermioneWeasley · 03/01/2015 14:40

Completely agree with House

We don't have to give equal credence between things that have been proved to work and things which have been demonstrated over and over again NOT to work (beyond placebo).

I am an ardent user of the placebo effect - I dole out healing kisses and magic rubs to my children daily. Doesn't mean it's medicine or that I do have actual healing powers.

By the way "allopathy"???? WTAF????
