Homeopathic treatment for reflux

babynotburp · 02/01/2015 10:06

My 15 week old has pretty bad reflux. He is growing well and reaching all his milestones but I'd love to be able to help him.

The doctor suggested infant gaviscon but I wasn't keen due to the constipation.

Someone said you can get a homeopathic remedy from boots which works well.

I can't remember the name of it. I think it started with a c.

Has anyone tried this and had any success. Was it also easy to administer?

Thanks xConfused

By all means try something natural, like a herbal remedy (chamomile has been suggested before, also peppermint can help, but seek advice from a herbalist).

Herbal medicine is effective because it contains active ingredients that do something (which is why they can also cause unwanted side effects).

Herbal medicine is NOT the same as homeopathy which is based on a made up premise ('treat like with like' - i.e. treat a fever with something that causes a fever) and assumes that water has a 'memory' of molecules that have passed through it.

I know that homeopathy has helped many people, but it is not based on anything beyond placebo which means that treating your baby with it may help to make you feel better (you feel you are doing something for her), but will NOT help her.

Having lived with the misery that is a premature baby severely affected by reflux I recognise the desperation for wanting to help your child and not wanting to do the wrong thing.
Infant Gaviscon is mainly a feed thickener (it is quite different from adult Gaviscon) and is worth a try, but if if does not work, go back and ask for Omeprazole or Ranitidine. If your baby's distress is caused by reflux (many fractious babies will get treated for reflux but actually are just 'high need' babies in which case NO reflux remedy in the world will make any difference, only time will) then either of those will work like a charm.

Don't waste your time on homeopathy.
Consider herbal medicine or effective conventional drugs.
Thanks

Babies have died because their parents have given them homeopathy rather than proper medicine. It's not harmless to go peddling this bullshit.

OP, homeopathy contains no active ingredients, that's why it can't harm your baby. It's water. You might as well try kissing your baby's reflux better, both treatments are natural.

Branleuse · 02/01/2015 12:51

youre taking that to a massive extreme.

People have died from all sorts of things, and the op has already been to a doctor who suggested not going the medical route unless it gets worse, if you care to RTFT.

Trying a homeopathic remedy for something is NOT the same as refusing all medical treatment. Not even close. There is no need to read between the lines and assume the ultimate downfall of civilisation as we know it and babies dying because a lady on the internet asked for advice on a homeopathic remedy for her childs reflux.

We get it. Homepathy is controversial. Youve all put the party line across, and thats fine. To start screaming about neglect and children dying because one homeopathic vegan nutcase didnt seek proper medical attention once, is quite frankly, hysterical nonsense.

its a thread on. mumsnet.
Answering. A specific question!

specialsubject · 02/01/2015 13:15

lot of 'I asked a question and don't like the answer' here. How very managerial.

homeopathy is as efficient as prayer. Try that.

anyone who didn't flick their hair through their entire education should know the difference between homeopathy (water plus placebo) and herbalism (which becomes conventional medicine when it works)

what makes me froth at the mouth is that the NHS funds homeopathy. Do they fund laying on of hands too? Utterly outrageous!

My so had dreadful reflux. We kept meds to a minimum but used gabison when he was in pain. Have you checked for cmp intolerance? My ds ended up on prescription cmp free formula which helped

I'm sorry to say the onlything which really helped was time. He grew out of it. We weened early at 4m on his paediatricians advice and the more upright he was the better. By 7 m he had more or less outgrown it

Oh and get lots and lots of waterproof bibs Wink

Ignoring or not treating reflux can lead to cancer. I say this as someone with GERD who tried to treat it with non-medicine methods. My foolishness could well be the end of me.

I don't actually understand how anyone can believe that water and sugar that has once had some herbs near it, that's been beaten against a rock using a belt, is going to treat any medical complaint. (That might not be exactly right, but it's something like that). How do you think it's going to do anything? And if it does rely on believing that it will work, how will it help a baby who has no concept of believing in anything? Confused

house, what youve said has been pretty fucking insulting to the many many people who use this very popular form of self help. You are going on to major extremes that dont bear any relevence to the original problem. Maybe its an anxiety problem you have then. Maybe you could find a little remedy for it?

Branleuse · 02/01/2015 13:57

please just read the thread again.

This is why i normally just avoid threads with the word homeopathy in them.
Someone read 'ifuckinglovescience' once, or watched YouTube clip on ben goldacre and decide that they know all about alternative therapies and anyone who uses a bit of nux vomica for reflux is a dangerous idiot.

I think you should do some more research on reflux and see if your baby has an issue with dairy. There is some info. on it on Kellymom. My son's reflux stopped within a day on Neutramigen (I had an amazing very young GP by chance on that visit to the surgery who had just been working on a ward where she saw the link between CMP and reflux and prescribed it immediately). If you are breastfeeding take all dairy (and goats etc.) out of your diet. I think I read that it takes two weeks to fully leave your body (but I might be wrong on that) if you are BF'ing.

Branleuse · 02/01/2015 14:06

noones telling parents to use anything. A parent came on here enquirubg about which homeopathic treatment might work. A couple of us answered the fucking question and some others gave non patronising suggestions.
A few of you then just start frothing at the mouth at the mere mention of the H word.
Really

I don't think you can just pick a remedy off teh shelf that will work unless it is herbal not homeopathic. Homeopahy would need you to visit a homeopath because the remedy that would work for one may not work for another
