Has anyone got a 4x4?

We have just decided to get rid of our faithful Hippo (Nissan Micra) and branch out into the uncertain world of much larger family cars.
I have been looking at a discovery or freelander - please note all old ones not new.
Has anyone any experience of how good/bad they are please? Or any 4x4's they would recommend or MPV's
Many thanks

"of a 4x4 driver who kills a child, who would have survived if the car had been smaller."

that's a giant leap of logic isn't it? in a certain scenario - yes - in another a drunken or high on dope driver behind the wheel of a mini - a boy racer in his dad's BMW maybe the killer and a thousand other scenarios.

Cars don't only kill children either.

No need for the chip on shoulder, sorry it just doesn't exist, you have let your arguement down in your presumption. I choose not to have one.

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:41

hmmm - why get so het up saying 4x4s are status symbols - so what? If i have the money to drive and run one thats my business!

Anteater · 07/11/2005 22:41

mykidsmum=stupidgirl?

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:42

you think so Anteater?

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:42
Grin
Wordsmith · 07/11/2005 22:43

NO SK it is not chip on shoulder. I would love a flashy BMW or MG, I would love a big old Victorian house too. It's the lack of respect for evryone else, it's the 'f-you, it's my choice, it's a free country' attitude that gets me. They are exclusive, not inclusive.

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:43

he means the poster 'stupidgirl' skinny - lol!

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:43

Absolutely Jools Too, but no need to add to the statistics further is there. all those scenarios do exist but so do the 4x4 ones and they are equally as unessecary to the families of those killed by them

Satine · 07/11/2005 22:43

I'm afraid the image of 4x4s as fuck you cars is being well and truly confirmed. Can't we have a sensible debate instead of getting personal?

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:44

Wordsmith - we have a 4x4 - are you saying I am a"'f-you, it's my choice, it's a free country'" kind of girl?

Cos if you are, you're way out of line.

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:45

Satine if you're referring to Anteaters post - there was a poster called 'stupidgirl' who used to post on these boards

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:47

They really are not fuck you cars!

Wordsmith · 07/11/2005 22:47

JT I have no idea what kind of person you are or where you live. If you read my post you will see that I was arguing against the urban use of 4x4s for no other reason than the school run/the 5 mile journey to work. You may not do that but I don't know. But I know plenty of people who do. In such a situation they are anti-social cars.

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:47

Skinnycow, words fail me, well actually they don't. i am not het up with apparent envy, I am concerned that people make these choices which are potentially fatal to others based on the asthetics of a car, which lets face it transports people from a to b. therefore my conclusion is that those that those who chose tohave them do so based on how they look, unless you live in the country and need them, whichh reinforces my idea of a status symbol, clear enough?? without looking in anyway jealous.

Satine · 07/11/2005 22:47

No, JT, I knew that - it was posts like "I know 4x4s are status symbols but I can afford one so so what?" that got my attention.

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 22:48

Not sure where big houses come into it. What's wrong with having a big house?

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:49

Honestly how many parents at yoru schools own 4x4s or people carriers (which too are very large and can obscure the toddler at the roadside)?

Anteater · 07/11/2005 22:49

Super pleased if it is Stupidgirl, loved all those latenight foxy debates!

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:49

Fwiw I am not stupid girl, although if she had opinions similar to mine then she was obviously not stupid at all

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:50

I would love a big Victorian house too but definitely out of my price bracket round here

Anteater · 07/11/2005 22:50

Arrrggghhh

Wordsmith · 07/11/2005 22:50

Nothing's wrong with a big house. I'd love one. It was the gated community thing I don't like (presume you were referring to my post as I was the only one to mention houses.) But it was just a comparative thing, I don't want to get drawn into that on this thread.

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:50

Skinnycow, just because lots of people have them doesn't make it okay, i'm sure I've already said that...

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:52

4x4's aren't that beautiful to look at - are they? - ours isn't, nice inside mind you
