Has anyone got a 4x4?

We have just decided to get rid of our faithful Hippo (Nissan Micra) and branch out into the uncertain world of much larger family cars.
I have been looking at a discovery or freelander - please note all old ones not new.
Has anyone any experience of how good/bad they are please? Or any 4x4's they would recommend or MPV's
Many thanks

So lots of people using them makes it okay?? It actually stinks to me of keeping up with the Jones's. The other choices made in our lives are not potetntially fatal to others, lets face it my choice not to live in london isn't going to kill anyone, if i drive a 4x4 there is every chance that my choice may.

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:16

then disappears up it!

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:16

it seems that owners of 4x4's have far better manners than some that do not!

I detect a touch of green there and it's not from my car fumes .

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:17

your choice pet!

Anteater · 07/11/2005 22:17

Feels a bit like the foxhunting debate..

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:17

Indeed they do JT!

starshaker · 07/11/2005 22:17

i dont have 1 but used to drive a grand cherokee while nannying also had the used of an audi tt but much prefered the jeep. it was fab and so nice to drive. i had a fiat panda before i worked there and it wasnt difficult changing over

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:18

or the breast / bottle
or the private / state
or the cloth /other nappy

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:19

Actually anteater in your situation i have no problem, as that is what these cars were built for. What next formula one in the streets of London- oh yeah thats already been suggested.

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:22

Pretty cheap shot there, but fwiw I choose not to have one, its not about envying others that do.

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:23

in an ideal world we'd all walk everywhere, live in harmony, breast feed our children and enjoy it, send them to a local community school which catered for everyone and grow our own food - BUT WE DONT! We make our own choices!

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:26

yes we do make choices but IMo thats a flimsy arguement when the choice to drive a car which can cause so much damage is justifiable because its roomy, or is higher up. Is it necessary??? No not unless you are using such a car for its original purpose, which lets face it was not the school run

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:27

so tell me what was the original purpose?

Anteater · 07/11/2005 22:27

Idea of hell:
drive a 4x4 to a
private school with
bottle fed kids who used to wear
disposable naps and
have followed the hounds..
oh God, its me..

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:27

I'm sure Anteater is thrilled to get your approval mkm.

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to get my head out of you know where.

Satine · 07/11/2005 22:29

I seem to have missed something here - is it ok to drive a 4x4 if you don't smoke, then? Eh? So if I recycle my carrier bags, does that mean I can burn old tyres in my garden?!

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:30

I should imagine my opinion means f*ck all, doesn't stop me voicing it though. Its clear those who drive these cars couldn't give a damn about the very real issues discussed here anyway, until it affects them maybe.

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 22:32

you can actually do whatever you want to do as long as it's within the law.

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:33

fcking hell MKM - what is* your problem?

I drive a frigging 4x4 - i add to the worlds pollution problem

but I dont get on a frigging bus or aeroplane which pukes out loads of shite! I bet you do though!

Satine · 07/11/2005 22:34

I find it odd that if a passenger or driver in a particular type of vehicle were at significantly higher risk of serious injury or death in an accident, the car would be taken off the road and there would be a big fuss. But endanger pedestrians to that same extent and people say "Well, it's my choice!" As though the stupid peasant shouldn't get in the way. Sorry, meant to say pedestrian.

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:35

4x4 are a status symbol and quite frankly I'm happy not to be bothered with all that shite. However, legal or not, will that ease he conscience of a 4x4 driver who kills a child, who would have survived if the car had been smaller.

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:36

chip on shoulder is a phrase that springs to mind here

Wordsmith · 07/11/2005 22:37

I have one friend with an old landrover but then he's a ranger in Scotland so does a lot of off-road driving.

Then I have several other friends who live in towns and use them for the school run and going to work. OK they have a couple of kids but - guess what - so do I and I can manage to fit mine in my Clio!! (just about...)

I do need a bigger car but what I actually need is storage space for bikes, pushchair and holiday gear, not seating, so I'm looking for an estate. Preferably diesel with a good fuel consumption. I don't do many miles a week and probably about twice a year I drive from the Midlands to Cornwall.

I really can't see the case for 4x4s other than in a rural off-road situation or a case like Anteater's. Let's face it, that's not the types of usage we get hot under the collar about. But in an urban scenario, on the school run? We've all been there. It's a nightmare trying to walk to school on narrow pavements down one way streets with the boody things not only driving down the road but also parked on both sides so you can't see to cross until the very last minute.

And yes they are more dangerous if you hit someone. A lot of posters have gone about the 'high driving position' and 'better visibility' - for seeing the end of the road, maybe, but not for seeing the toddler who's about to run out between two more of the great gas guzzlers parked on the side of the road.

I'm sorry but in urban situations I think they are just not on. I agree they are 'fxxx off' cars, just like gated communities are 'fxxx off' houses.

But that's another subject....

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 22:39

sorry to shatter your illusions Skinnycow but no on both counts, i haven't been abroad since i was 7, i love Devon and cornwall and have no need at this time to go anywhere else on my holiday. And don't be so shocked by my response its been reflected by many others on this thread and those that have come before. i just don't see the need, not only from an environmental perspective but from the safety of other road users, which as yet noone on here as offrered a valid arguement opposing.

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 22:39

MKM - where do you live just out of curiosity? and roughly how old are you?
