Has anyone got a 4x4?

We have just decided to get rid of our faithful Hippo (Nissan Micra) and branch out into the uncertain world of much larger family cars.
I have been looking at a discovery or freelander - please note all old ones not new.
Has anyone any experience of how good/bad they are please? Or any 4x4's they would recommend or MPV's
Many thanks

minis: irrevocably linked in my mind now with a certain london chain of estate agents....shudder.

because hmc, they don't kill you if they so much as touch you is why. how much more dangerous they are is the biggest factor imho. and as for bullbars, if any of you have them you need lining up and shooting.

Skribble V90 is a big 4x4, looks a bit like the BMW M5

Heathcliffscathy · 08/11/2005 22:10

omigod...i'm soooo sorry no idea how that happened!

princesspeahead · 08/11/2005 22:11

no Mrs D, my comment was more in relation to someone mentioning that stupidgirl was back under a different name.

you will remember that she is the charming lady who didn't see anything wrong with phoning up people who worked for pharmaceutical companies and threatening their children, on the grounds of "animal rights".

And I didn't mention hunting - just shooting. Neither dh nor I hunt

JoolsToo · 08/11/2005 22:11

pmsl!!! my next car is going to be ......

a mini - hee, hee!

princesspeahead · 08/11/2005 22:12

bullbars pointless and unforgiveable, I agree.

unless you use your 4x4 to round up cattle on a large ranch in australia.

Skribble · 08/11/2005 22:12

Should I post this 4 times to get me noticed? . My 4x4 cost less than a new mini or a corsa, and has a specialy designed plastic front that absorbs the impact of a pedestrian collision rather than shattering their legs and then flicking them on to the bonnet.

Heathcliffscathy · 08/11/2005 22:12

i also think that 4x4s are an ostentatious display of wealth and as such, how can i put this, a bit low rent.

Most bull bars in UK are now plastic and aslo absorb impacts.

princesspeahead · 08/11/2005 22:13

I was thinking of buying a mini for when I'm taking just 2 children to school or driving around by myself jools, because of my fuel-efficiency concerns, but I haven't because frankly I wouldn't be saving any fuel (and spending £15k or whatever on the car, duh)...

Skribble · 08/11/2005 22:14

I am neither ostentatious or wealthly, never mind you can still abuse me.

JoolsToo · 08/11/2005 22:14

must get that magazine you were on about....

fimac1 · 08/11/2005 22:16

I don't think its the material that the bull bars are made of - more the height they are at?

Probably some manufactures blurb to make you feel warm and fluffy about buying one, when the height will still force you under the car and crush you

Heathcliffscathy · 08/11/2005 22:18

oh skribble. do you really feel abused? stand up and be proud...'i'm a 4x4 driver and i LOVE it, sod the rest of you i like what my lovely car says about me, my lifestyle and my choices'....no?

JoolsToo · 08/11/2005 22:19

I prefer to be judged on my words

fimac1 · 08/11/2005 22:20

Agree would lurvee a Mini....

moondog · 08/11/2005 22:21

I don't feel personaly abused just trying to make valid points.

So waht car doesn't maim and kill pedestrians in a collision? What do you drive that is so lovely and gentle, polystyrne solar powered cars is it?

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 22:22

I'm not ostentatious either - I just like the XC90... much like any other preference

I've just found this article

this

which says that the "Volvo XC90 achieves more than one star" (I think 2, but will have to double check) in pedestrian crash protection tests...which puts it in line with most family cars...

Ha! [triumphant emoticon]

elastamum · 08/11/2005 22:22

Cant say I care what people think of my car, also as am usually the only mummy at the school pick up more often than not muddy and smelling of horses god knows what the yummy set think of me

MrsDoolittle · 08/11/2005 22:23

Oh well, I've had enough of this. Time for bed. Ranting on here isn't going to change anything.
It's a shame HMC that you were reconsidering your purchase of the Volvo for the right reasons and you've decided against it for what? Because you think people assume you must be rich? Naaaaa surely not. That is far too poor.
