Am I mad to buy a new Mountain Buggy when DD is 21mths old?!

I have a Bugaboo Frog which I'm selling as I'm sick of the 2-part fold and the fact that it takes up the whole boot (and we don't have small cars), but mainly cos we mostly do off-road walking.
Am I mad to buy a Mountain Buggy when DD is already 21mths old? She is a good walker already, but obviously there are still plenty of times when she needs a buggy - shops/sleeps/long walks.

We're also ttc no.2 so it will get used for a 2nd baby (like the idea that I can get a carrycot - prob from ebay - and can attach a kiddyboard)
I would've bought the MB 1st time round except it didn't have an adjustable handle then and we're both tall.
Am I mad??!! Cost (from chariotsatp) will hopefully be covered by selling the Bugaboo + loads of accessories.

Also, any opinions on MB much appreciated.

TIA

H2D - v good point re the recall, I think it affected UK too. And I've just spied a 2nd hand urban 2005 on ebay too... No, friend has urban, I thought handle height was same as terrain ie 99cm?

Thx v much for offer to push yours but we're in the North West.

Of course I've now been browsing chariotsatp website and quite like the look of the terrain. Oh b**ger! I read your lengthy debate re urban v terrain with charleypops the other day (made fantastic reading Grin btw). I can feel more sleepless nights ahead...

I still think urban will be more flexible for us though. I do have a LittleLife back carrier for full-on offroad adventures!

Yeah, 99cm on mine, just checked. Smile

LOL, charleypops and I did have tremendously long debates on all this ! We met up a while back and pushed buggies, LOL.

We were just in Liverpool... doubtless you could post on a local meet up thread to see if there are any MNers with the relevant buggies near you.

The Urban is more flexible in that you can turn around on the spot, but tbh, how often do you do that ? Also the Terrain can be swivelled 180 degrees on the spot after you've spent 30 seconds mastering the art of turning a fixed wheel buggy ! I'd get the Urban if it was smaller / lighter than the Terrain, but it isn't. It'll still need loads of boot space etc. Might make more sense to get a Maclaren if you need easy peasy twisty turny teensy tiny boot space thingy.

just had to add to this thread - I've got a MB Urban which we've had from when ds was born using a carrycot. It is absolutely superb - goes anywhere - just got back from a week of hill walking with it in Wales. We chose it over the terrain for the dual practicality - the swivel wheel is a godsend in towns and we don't bother to fix it when out walking as it works just as well. Superb piece of kit. We got ours shipped from NZ which saved a lot of money.

LOL. Passionate customers eh...

We need to organise a definitive shopping mall and muddy field show down.

Ooo no, I really don't like Maclarens, just not my cup of tea (no offence to Mac owners!). My 1st car was a rickety old Renault 5 and it never felt very secure, I feel the same about buggies LOL.

Anyway, have finally found a place not too far away to compare urban vs terrain, I'd say it's neck & neck at this stage...

Go on... any news ?

Smile
Twiglett · 19/04/2006 07:37

yes you are totally mad ... get a cheap, light fold-down buggy ..

if you are TTC atm there is a strong chance you will not need a buggy board by time 2nd baby comes along

Twiglett · 19/04/2006 07:38

what's with the 'buggy porn'? I've never understood why people are so enraptured of buggies

hub2dee · 19/04/2006 07:48

Must be like 4X4 wannabes, hey, Twiggers...

lanismum · 19/04/2006 09:04

buggy porn Grin

hub2dee · 19/04/2006 09:06

I should let Twiglett push my MB one day really.

Then she would turn into a complete out-of-control porn starlet wanting bigger and bigger wheels.

Bozza · 19/04/2006 09:18

TBH I agree with twiglett. I think there should be no real need to buy anything except a lightweight buggy for any child over 18 months.

oops · 19/04/2006 09:28

i suppose none of you have ahd a bad back or RSI in yur fingers from pushing crap buggies , then? Smile

lanismum · 19/04/2006 09:30

buy it buy it buy it Grin
im getting one on friday Wink

hub2dee · 19/04/2006 09:35

I understand your sentiment Bozza, but I've pushed friends' lightweight buggies (only for a short while and only on the pavement), and I imagine it would be literally impossible to go off-road walking with it, except in the very driest of conditions with v. short grass for short distances.

Bozza · 19/04/2006 09:38

But surely by that age you would already have something suitable h2d? I realise that I could also be considered quite tightfisted in some areas. Wink If we go on unsuitable terrain we have a backpack for DD (23 months).

hub2dee · 19/04/2006 09:59

Well, amazonian has a Mugaboo, and doesn't feel it's suitable... but I understand what you mean re: the age of the child and using alternative carriers.

Re: tight-fisted... these buggies are somewhat less expensive in the States. Grin

Twiglett · 19/04/2006 12:28

I will lay bets that most people who talk about the 'off-roading' and turning on a sixpence palaver regarding buggies ... never do more than a gentle saunter down to the shops and possibly through the park / common / heath Grin

amazonianwoman · 19/04/2006 12:31

Buggy porn Grin

In my defence, I've only ever had one buggy, so I seem to be in the minority vs the average mum! And I certainly wouldn't consider a big purchase if we weren't having any more babies. And I think it makes more financial sense to sell up now when I can get a v healthy sum for existing one (Mugaboo haha, like it!), rather than wait 9+ mths, still buy a new one, but get less for existing one. And I just don't like cheap umbrella ones, soz.

Self-justification over Grin And thx again for all comments x

Twiglett · 19/04/2006 14:55

the moo could take ya ... buggies are for chickens Grin

would love to come and see you .. lets arrange soon

lanismum · 19/04/2006 16:25

twiglett, you are sooooooooo right, my mountain buggy will never get anywhere near anything that could be described as a mountain, or off-road Blush Grin

vickiyumyum · 19/04/2006 16:44

should have known h2d would be on here!LOL! i had the urban for ds2 and loved it, but being a complete buggyaholic i sold it and brought other buggies, which didn't live up to expectations. i will be buying another mb for lucy when she is a bit older, as i finally gave in and brought a bugaboo for her so want to get some use out of that, but as you say aw it folds up far bigger than i expected.

i think i will get the urban in red, i live in a town and find it very easy to use, and am quite excited about having an adjustable handle(mine was a 2002 one and didn't have one) also i found with teh black that the fabric faded. even having the urban it stood up to most terrains we had ours on sand, pebbles, mud, but mainly pavements! LOL!

for a lightweight in car buggy, i thouroughly recommend the micralite again had one for ds2 and it was fab, easy to push, steer, lovely to look at, lightweight and again, no doubt i will be buying one for lucy for our holidays.

Bozza · 19/04/2006 16:46
